Chapter 3

Evil SIL
I took a deep breath and forced myself to pull my foot back. I bent down, picked up my employee ID, and slipped it back around my neck. Then I returned to my desk.

Lena and Adrian exchanged a look before bursting into laughter.

"I thought you had some backbone. Turns out, you'll bow your head for a paycheck this small. That's just pathetic."

Lena walked over and slammed a thick stack of documents onto my desk.

"If you're not leaving, then get to work. Bennett wants that important client information, plus the bilingual speech for tomorrow's meeting. I want both on my desk tomorrow morning."

I opened the documents, and my eyebrows immediately drew together.

They were packed with highly technical industry materials.

Lena could not even handle basic client communication. How did she manage to get into a company where the standards for dealing with external clients were this high?

Had HR really skipped the entire hiring process just because she said, "I'm the CEO's sister"?

I was full of questions, but I did not waste any more time. I turned on my computer and started working through the materials.

If she wanted me to write the speech for her, then I would be more than happy to 'help'. I deliberately mixed up the units for several key technical parameters in the speech.

The next day, a typhoon swept through the city, bringing torrential rain with it.

Our guests were scheduled to arrive at 2:00 pm.

At 1:00 pm, Lena walked over to my desk.

"Mr. Lawson's favorite thing is the blueberry muffin from that bakery in Solstice City. Go buy two boxes. We'll serve them to the guests."

I glanced out the window at tree branches being ripped apart by the howling wind.

"There's a typhoon. I can't get a car, and delivery services have stopped."

"Then walk!"

Adrian came over, grabbed me by the arm, and hauled me out of my chair. He practically dragged me toward the company entrance.

"Solstice City is only ten miles from here. Run fast, and you'll make it back just in time for the meeting!

"Chloe, this affects the company's reputation, and it affects our most important client. If you don't bring those muffins back, or if you delay the guest's schedule, you can pack up your things and leave!"

I had no choice. Remembering Mom's warning, I could only accept my fate and go.

By the time I pushed open the conference room doors, I was soaked from head to toe, and the meeting was already halfway over. Lena was standing in front of the projection screen, stumbling through the speech I had written. Every so often, she even mispronounced one of the technical terms.

The moment she saw me walk in, she pinched her nose in disgust. "What happened to you? Hurry up, put the stuff down and get out. Don't make the conference room dirty!"

Wesley Smith, one of the company's guests, frowned. He seemed less than pleased with Lena's attitude.

Lena immediately put on a bright smile and turned to Wesley. "She's just a cleaner."

At that moment, one of the guests pointed at the data on the PowerPoint slide and demanded an explanation from Bennett.

"This is your company's idea of sincerity? All the units for your core data are wrong, and your spokesperson's language is extremely rude! Are you insulting us?"

Cold sweat broke out across Bennett's forehead. He spun around and glared at Lena. "What did you do?!"

Lena's face went white. Then, her eyes landed on me. She suddenly pointed at me and screamed, "Mr. Turner, she did it! She's trying to steal my credit, so she secretly replaced the slides behind my back! She's trying to sabotage our partnership!"

Adrian immediately jumped in. "Exactly! Mr. Turner, Chloe has always been jealous of Lena. She must have done this on purpose to get revenge!"

I let out an icy laugh, my voice rough from the rain and exhaustion.

"Lena, didn't you just tell the guests that I'm only a cleaner? How exactly would a cleaner steal your credit and replace your slides? Is your brain as bad as your communication skills?"

Lena's face turned pale, then red, then pale again.

Bennett had spent years navigating the corporate world. There was no way he could not see what was going on. He shot Lena a furious look and lowered his voice into a harsh roar.

"Shut up! Haven't you embarrassed us enough already? Get out!"

He immediately turned around, plastered a smile onto his face, and went back to placating the guests.

Lena was kicked out of the conference room. Once she reached the hallway, she turned and glared viciously at me.

"Chloe, you think you can set me up?" She leaned close to my ear, her teeth clenched in fury. "Just you wait. I'm the president's own sister! The first thing I'll do when my brother gets back is have him blacklist you across the entire industry!"

I quietly pressed the stop button on the voice recorder in my pocket. "Sure. I'll be waiting."

Just then, Adrian rushed over to curry favor with Lena. He grabbed me by the collar and roughly dragged me toward the door. "You still have the nerve to talk back? Go to the bathroom and think about what you've done! You're not coming back until I say so!"

Lena's raised hand froze in midair. "... Eric Jones?"Her lips trembled, and her legs began to shake. As a fake heiress who had spent months swaggering around the company and deceiving everyone, how could she not know what that name meant?Eric Jones was the real man in control of Jones Group. Rumor had it that he was ruthless, decisive, and absolutely not someone anyone in the business world dared to cross.Adrian was even worse. He collapsed onto the couch, his face completely white."M-Mr. Jones!"Eric did not spare those clowns another glance. He strode over and carefully lifted me into his arms."Chloe..." His normally steady voice trembled slightly.I rested against his warm chest, and the last thread holding me together finally snapped. "Eric..."I opened my mouth, but my throat was so raw that I could barely make a sound. Tears rolled down my cheeks. "They... wouldn't let me complain… They forced me to drink... They were going to break my legs..."Eric looked at the

I struggled with everything I had. The liquor went down the wrong pipe, and I broke into a violent coughing fit. A scorching pain spread from my stomach through my entire body, like thousands of needles stabbing me from the inside."Hold her down! Don't let her spit it out!" Adrian shouted excitedly from the side.Lena held up her phone, recording me as she laughed so hard her shoulders shook. "Chloe, look at you now! Aren't you usually so proud? Don't you look down on me? Look at you now, just like a slave!"Half the bottle of liquor was forced down my throat. The bodyguards finally let go. I collapsed onto the carpet, clutching my stomach as waves of pain tore through it.Adrian gave an icy laugh and pulled out the forged confession and a box of red ink paste. He tossed both onto the floor in front of me."Enough. Look at you. You're barely alive, and even Mr. White has lost interest. Sign it, stamp your fingerprint on it, and we'll call it a day."Lena walked over and planted

By 5:00 pm that day, the entire company was in chaos. The head of the partner company stormed into the office with a team of lawyers, threatening to take us straight to court if the company did not pay the ten-million-dollar penalty by the end of the day.Bennett tore into Adrian and Lena in his office."I don't care what you have to do. Just make sure Mr. White calms down! If anything happens to this company, both of you are fired!"The moment Adrian stepped out of Bennett's office, he was sweating bullets. "Lena, what are we going to do? Mr. White is notorious for being impossible to deal with. How are we supposed to calm him down?"Lena's eyes shifted, and a vicious smile slowly appeared on her face. "Isn't Mr. White a womanizer? And don't we happen to have a perfect scapegoat right here?"Adrian froze for a second. Then, his eyes lit up. "You mean... Chloe?""This whole mess was caused by her anyway. Have her spend dinner with Mr. White tonight and apologize to him in person

I was locked in the underground warehouse for an entire night. There was no water, and no one brought me any food.At 8:00 am the next day, the steel door finally opened. Adrian stood outside, covering his nose as he looked at me with obvious disgust."Chloe, have you come to your senses yet? Are you signing or not?"I braced myself against the wall and slowly pushed myself to my feet. My vision went black for a moment, and my legs were so weak I could barely stand.Still, I gritted my teeth and glared at him."No. I didn't do it, and I wouldn't sign it if I were dying.""Pretty stubborn." Adrian gave a humorless laugh and tossed a filthy cleaning uniform at my feet."If you refuse to sign, then don't blame me for giving you some real work. The cleaner called in sick today, so all twelve bathrooms on the first through third floors are your responsibility. You don't get off until they're all clean."I said nothing. I picked up the uniform and pulled it on.Fine. Let them enjo

"If you refuse to admit it, my brother is the president of this company. Once he gets back, I'll make sure you can't find work anywhere in this industry!"I slowly rose to my feet, a hollow smile curling at the corner of my mouth. "Sure."I looked straight at Lena and spoke each word carefully. "Since your brother is the president, why don't we call him right now and ask him exactly how he plans to make sure I can't work in this industry?"Lena's face stiffened as her eyes darted away."Who do you think you are? My brother is incredibly busy. He's overseas negotiating a multibillion-dollar deal. Do you seriously think you're important enough to hear his voice?"I tugged at the corner of my mouth and took a step toward her. "A multibillion-dollar deal? Funny. I also heard the president is overseas negotiating an acquisition."I stared directly into her eyes, lowering my voice. "But the president's last name is Jones, and yours is Rogers. So, tell me, which father did you get this
