Chapter 1

Author: Perfect Timing
Before I could give it much thought, my wife, Lauren Ingram, knocked on the car window. Our twin sons, Mason and Cayden Cox, stood beside her.

Normally, I would've greeted them with a smile. This time, however, my throat tightened as I stared at Mason and Cayden, because the longer I looked at them, the more undeniable one troubling fact became.

They looked nothing alike.

"What are you staring at?" Lauren teased as she climbed into the back seat. "Don't you recognize your own sons?"

I didn't answer. Instead, I lowered my head and clicked on the profile of the user whose comment had gone viral.

The person's age and IP location matched those of my childhood friend, Gregory Hayes. Even the profile picture showed a mole on the back of his hand, identical to Gregory's.

A chill swept through me.

Still, I knew it would be unfair to suspect my wife and children without proof. Rather than drive myself crazy with speculation, I needed a paternity test.

I glanced at Lauren and the boys through the rearview mirror.

Noticing my gaze, Lauren frowned. "What's gotten into you today? Start driving. Let's go home."

"We're not going home," I told her.

"Then, where are we going?"

"The hospital."

I tamped down my emotions and kept my voice even. "The boys need bloodwork for a medical checkup."

Lauren looked at the twins, who had already fallen asleep, and complained, "They're perfectly healthy. Why put them through all that for no reason? You know Cayden is terrified of needles. If he throws a fit, don't expect me to help you calm him down."

Her refusal sounded casual, but I caught the brief flash of alarm in her eyes.

Without responding, I pulled up my conversation with Mason and Cayden's homeroom teacher and handed Lauren my phone.

"Their teacher requested it. The school needs the results for its records."

Her brows furrowed. "Then, why didn't I know about it?"

I turned and gave her a silent look.

She immediately stopped talking. It was the guilty silence of someone who already knew the answer.

Whether it involved parent-teacher conferences or keeping up with the class announcements, I had always handled everything concerning our sons.

Their teacher knew which parent was actually involved and whom to contact when something needed to get done.

Besides, I wasn't lying about the medical checkup. Their teacher really had requested one, although that was several months ago.

Once Lauren realized the request was legitimate, the tension left her face. She leaned back against the seat and lazily drifted off to sleep.

She was still half asleep when we arrived at the hospital.

After Mason and Cayden climbed out of the car, they looked at her expectantly. I made a token effort to ask, "Are you coming with us?"

Lauren waved dismissively. "It's just a medical checkup. You're their father. You can handle it."

I smiled.

Her answer didn't surprise me. She had always believed that after giving birth to the boys, every responsibility that followed belonged to me.

Now that the teacher's request had erased her suspicions, she refused without giving the matter another thought.

That was exactly what I wanted.

Before getting out of the car, I collected several strands of Gregory's hair from the front passenger seat.

Once inside the hospital, I registered the boys, took them through the testing process, and settled in to wait.

Several hours later, I finally received two reports, but the moment I read the results, my legs nearly gave out.

According to the first report, it proved that Mason, my older son, was biologically mine.

But for Cayden, as the second report showed that Gregory was his biological father.

In other words, although the boys were twins, my younger son wasn't biologically mine. Cayden was Gregory's child.

The clueless fool mentioned in that post really was me.

I gripped the papers so tightly that they crumpled in my hands. The whole situation was almost too ridiculous to believe.

If I hadn't stumbled upon the truth today, how many more years would I have spent raising the child Lauren had with Gregory?

Hatred and fury surged through me.

Then, I remembered that three months ago, I had invested my entire fortune in Gregory's company.

If Lauren and Gregory wanted to make a fool out of me, they couldn't blame me for pulling my investment.

By the time Mason woke up the next morning, the house had already been emptied out.On the way to school, he looked up at me and asked, "Daddy, don't we have to wait for Cayden?"I gently ruffled his hair and smiled. "No. We won't have to wait for him anymore."I left the divorce entirely in my lawyer's hands. When everything was settled, Lauren walked away with 10% of our assets and custody of Cayden. All the properties that had previously been registered in Cayden's name were transferred back as well. I immediately had them placed under Mason's name instead. On the day we went to court to finalize the divorce, Lauren asked, "You don't even want to see me anymore, do you?"I regarded her calmly, but my thoughts suddenly drifted back to the day I had discovered Gregory's post.I remembered secretly taking Mason and Cayden in for paternity testing and how nervous Lauren had been the entire time. When the results finally came back, the last of my composure had shattered. I coul

After taking Mason out for dinner, I brought him home and found Lauren still there. She cautiously poked her head out of the kitchen when she heard us come in. "I warmed up some milk for you two. Have some before bed."Her voice was gentler than I had heard it in years. She even brought the milk over and carefully placed a glass in Mason's hands.Ever since we got married, Lauren had barely set foot in the kitchen, much less warmed up a glass of milk for Mason before bed.Mason held the glass in both hands and looked at me uncertainly. My brows immediately drew together. I took the glass from him and poured the milk down the sink."He's lactose intolerant! How do you not know that?" I snapped.Keeping my anger under control, I sent Mason back to his room to sleep. As soon as he was gone, Lauren came up behind me and wrapped her arms around my waist. Her voice trembled with emotion."Honey, it honestly slipped my mind. I'll learn from my mistakes. I promise I'll be the best mo

"I can't believe you had the nerve to cheat on me."Elliora Jones was dressed in a tailored suit, her lips pressed into a hard line."So, that's why you've been trying every excuse in the book to stay here. You kept telling me it was because you wanted to help take care of my parents, but really, you just wanted to stay close to your old flame, didn't you?"Gregory panicked. Clutching his cheek, he stammered, "H-Honey, when did you get back? This isn't what it looks like. I can explain!"I scoffed inwardly.Gregory and I had known each other for more than 20 years, and he had always thought he knew me well. Apparently, that was why he had felt comfortable sleeping with Lauren right under my nose. But that worked both ways. I knew him just as well as he knew me.It hadn't taken much effort to find his wife's email address through social media. Once I had it, I sent her Gregory's post along with the paternity test results."Everything you have, from the clothes you wear to the ho

"He's the one who came after me," Lauren insisted. "I don't know what came over me, and I made a mistake."Several people had already warned Gregory that he was about to be blacklisted from the industry. He sank into a chair, looking utterly defeated. Upon hearing Lauren's accusation, however, he pointed at her with a sneer."What did you just say? I came after you?"Lauren stared at him stubbornly, her eyes wide.Gregory gave a cold laugh. "What about all those times you called me in the middle of the night and told me to come downstairs to your apartment? You didn't seem to think I was seducing you then. "And when Henry went away on business, who invited me over and had me stay at your place for three straight days? Was that my idea, too?"Then, he turned to me with a mocking smile."You still don't know the whole story, do you? The truth is, she and I were already into each other on your wedding day. While you were passed out drunk, your bride was in the guest room with me

The words slipped out of Lauren before she could stop herself. The second she realized what she had said, she clamped a hand over her mouth. "Honey, why didn't you ever tell me you were capable of pulling something like this?"I stared at her in silence.Lauren had changed after we got married. She stopped caring about my job or anything else going on in my life. The only time she ever showed any interest was when she wanted me to send her money, and even then, all I got was a complaint."Why is your paycheck so low this month?"I had always assumed raising the kids was exhausting her. Instead of blaming her, I blamed myself for not earning enough to give her and the boys a more comfortable life.If I hadn't seen Gregory's post, I might still be completely in the dark, busting my ass to support another man's woman and raise his kid for him.The thought of what had happened to Gregory seemed to send Lauren into a panic. She dropped to her knees with a thud and wrapped her arms ar

The video showed Lauren and Gregory acting intimately at the campground. The room erupted in an instant."They've been attached at the hip all day. I honestly thought they were married to each other.""They're not even trying to hide it. They're hooking up right under Henry's nose.""What kind of childhood friend sleeps with your wife and then tricks you into financing his company?"The investors' faces hardened. Without exchanging a word, they moved behind me and confronted Gregory."Trust comes first in any business partnership. We won't work with someone we can't trust. After what we've just seen, withdrawing our investments is the best decision for everyone involved."Once they pulled their funding, Gregory's company would collapse within days, and he would become a laughingstock.Panic immediately set in, and he tried to slander me."We've been friends for years. Whatever problems we have should be settled in private. You can't pull your investment over a personal dispute
