Louise's POV

The bright light seems to want to blind me. After blinking a few times I get used to it and can keep my eyes open longer. And now I realize that the light is coming from an old lamp hanging from the ceiling. But otherwise, it was dark all around me.

I try to raise a hand to feel my face, it is heavy, but I manage to lift it anyway.

"You're awake."

I am startled by the voice next to me. And when I see the person who has just spoken, I am shocked. A witch. Have I been lying here unconscious with a witch around, I ask myself in horror. She sees my reaction and smiles. "Don't worry, you are safe with me. I am not a black witch and will not harm you".

Of course, I know that witches are anything but trustworthy, but if this one has kept me alive I do think I owe her the benefit of the doubt. I continue to stare at her as she looks back kindly.
