LOGINFor Lotte, the whole ride to her favorite diner was like falling down a rabbit hole. This town looked exactly as it had this morning when she clocked in at the bakery, and yet it somehow also felt so wrong. Staring into the back of David’s head, she acquired this bizarre urge to stroke his feather-light hair a few times. In fact, the overpowering desire became so strong that Lotte had to force her hands to rest under her ass or risk making an incredible fool of herself.
As if she were able to read her niece’s mind, Romy’s left hand suddenly appeared from the passenger seat and mimicked exactly what Charlotte had wanted. Her ruby nails even gilded down the driver’s neck a little, forming goose bumps that Lotte could see from her position in the back seat. In the rear-view mirror, the girl watched as David’s smile lifted just a bit more. For some reason - some insane reason - this made Charlotte’s stomach fill with jealousy… Followed by immediate shame.
The Aunt and Niece never had any complications when it came to men. Now, when Romy finally brought ‘home’ a good one, Lotte was sitting directly behind her and wanted to pull out the older woman’s weaves.
By the time the car pulled up to the diner, Charlotte was ready to just ask for a ride back to the bakery. She felt savage - animalistic - and incredibly scary… But then David looked back at her and smiled. “This place is charming. I hope they have milkshakes.”
“I love milkshakes,” Romy lied. Lotte had to hold back from rolling her eyes. Outside of anything from the bakery, Romy never touched sweets. She was always going on about how fat she was and would even shame Charlotte for finishing an entire brownie on her own. “What flavor is your favorite?” The older woman asked with a strange pep in her voice, reaching out a hand to rest over the one that David still had clung to the driver’s seat.
Without missing a beat, the Doctor answered, “Chocolate.”
“Me too!” Romy cheered, as if their being together at this very moment, both ‘fans’ of the same drink, were some confirmation from the stars.
David, missing the overenthusiasm, focused his attention on Charlotte, “And what about you?”
Romy snorted, cutting her niece off. “Oh, Lotte hates sweets…”
Lotte’s jaw practically hit the car floor.
Of course, Romy’s answer confused David greatly, “But then why work for a bakery? That must be torture…”
It was as if Charlotte were no longer in the car as Romy continued. “Lotte just wants to be a baker because her mother was. My sister could make anything taste delicious. Charlotte just wants to keep her mother’s memory alive.”
David’s gaze never left Lotte’s as the girl clamped down her teeth over her tongue. Again and again, she had to remind herself that this was the first decent guy that Romy had ever brought about, and it would have been a massive douche move to chase him off so soon. Lifting the corners of her mouth, the girl fixed David with a soft smile. “Let’s get inside then - I’m starving!”
Leading the way, Charlotte led everyone into the diner and motioned toward her favorite booth. It was one facing the Ocean and was close enough to the grill to get the most mouthwatering aroma of meat. The new waitress, Deb (one that Lotte already really liked), rushed to their table and began getting everyone’s drink orders. To Charlotte’s amusement, Romy, in a rush to order a diet soda, forgot to put in for a shake, unlike everyone else at the table.
David’s gaze swept to the rolling waves outside. “That is absolutely beautiful. I wish we lived closer to the Ocean.”
Romy batted her eyes, “We?”
The Doctor’s focus didn’t shift from the window as he answered, “I have 3 sons… We live in a mountain Cabin in Colorado.” Finally turning to his lunch ‘date’, the man’s tone took on a teasing air as he reminded Romy, “I did tell you all this last night; however, you were a bit out of it.”
Lotte grinned into the milkshake that had just been placed in front of her. Going entirely off of habit, the girl reached for the cherry on top and plopped it into her mouth. The best part of the drink… And then another cherry appeared. Looking up quickly, Charlotte watched David’s hand make a hasty retreat back to his end of the table after gifting her his cherry. That was sweet - too sweet - and for another long moment she was once more too stunned to know what to say.
Romy clicked her tongue, “Young lady, where are your manners? You should thank David.”
With cheeks almost as red as the new cherry on top of her drink, Lotte muttered a sloppy, “Thhhhannk youuuu.”
Saved by Deb, the waitress cleared her throat and cheerfully asked what everyone was in the mood for. Still attempting to play the ‘dream’ girl scenario that Romy had probably picked up in a random magazine, the older woman requested a salad with no croutons. The order pushed Lotte’s lips into a pucker as she asked for the new ‘Holiday Burger’ (which came with cranberries, brie, and bacon), and a side of stuffing-stuffed mushroom bites. It was even more amusing when David, practically drooling, ordered the same thing, extra bacon. The Doctor liked his meat…
By the time that they reached town, Lotte was certain she was going to be sick. Every time that James so much as twitched, she jumped. He had tried to reach for some gum from the glove box, which he had made her accept despite a few weak ‘no’s, and Charlotte had almost peed herself… Then he had leaned in and accidentally brushed her knee. As the bed of his truck lacked much elbow room, the bigger man had managed to do this several times. Each occurrence practically gave Lotte’s rear some airtime. Of course, just another mile from town, the girl had a hunch he was doing it all now on purpose. James was watching her, ever so slightly, from the corner of his deep brown eyes. She caught him doing it and could practically feel the smirk from under his copper beard. That lick had shaken her whole morning and made Lotte an emotional mess. She wondered faintly if he had honestly meant for it have the effect that it did. First, Lila and Alana had left her without a ride, and now James was thr
For the longest moment, Lotte waited for James to drop a sudden ‘Just Kidding’ or ‘Sorry, Family Hazing’. Unfortunately, as the seconds tolled on, she became very much aware of the fact that teasing was not James’s style. The big man, with his masculine build and stern face, frowned from deep in his copper beard and just continued to stare Charlotte down. Finally, compelled to speak, even though she didn’t know if her voice would break from embarrassment, Lotte turned her gaze toward Levi and chuckled. “I must have misheard them… or maybe they misheard me. Golly, we might have our days all kinds of mixed up.” Levi looked shocked. His doe eyes were as wide as the rims of the cups of coffee he had been carrying into the dining room. “I thought I heard them say today as well. Our bad… Shoot,” he mumbled, “We were all so tired, I don’t think any of us knew what we were saying. Maybe I should go wake my Dad up then. We wouldn’t want you to miss your first day of work…” “Or,” Matty counte
There was something behind her… then in front of her… then it was her… Lotte’s heart was now trying to beat its way out of her chest. Something big was pursuing her, chasing the girl through an apple orchard. Her bare feet pounded against the dirt, stinging their way up her legs… Her fur-covered legs. Out of shock, Charlotte stopped running and peered down to face the four limbs that were her arms and legs. They were hers no longer - Now they belonged to that of a terrifying wolf. Fear coursing through her veins, the girl threw back her head and released a shrill howl into the night. With a jolt, Lotte was up, her peachy skin covered in a layer of sweat. She clasped a hand to her heart, feeling as it pulsated through her chest just as it had done in her dream. Frantic, Charlotte tried to fill her depleted lungs with as much oxygen as they would allow for. She was suffocating, though she couldn’t tell why. Closing her eyes, the girl tried to focus on the simple task of inhaling and th
Despite the large family, Lotte was surprised to see that they managed to make space around the table for her and Romy. She turned to her Aunt with a smile and was embarrassed to see that the woman was already halfway through her drink. Teeth clenching, Lotte took the seat next to her Aunt and tried to communicate with her via a simple stare. The others had begun passing around plates of food, and Romy almost completely dropped her due to already being intoxicated. With a giggle/snort, the older woman turned to David, as if he would find that funny. The Doctor didn’t even notice; his gaze was on Brandon, who hadn’t even picked up his fork despite being one of the first served. When it was clear that David wasn’t going to give her the attention she wanted, Romy finally looked to her niece. Charlotte tried offering a comforting smile. She inclined her head toward their plates of food and dug in. The steak was amazing, and practically melted in Lotte’s mouth. She made a mental note to
Lila’s lips clung to Lotte’s skin even as the girl wiggled and wormed, attempting to free her toe from the other woman’s mouth. Finally, just when Charlotte thought she was going to have to find a crowbar, the redhead backed away with a grin. “Sorry, hunnie baby,” She purred, still holding tightly to Lotte’s foot. “Your own fault for having such cute little toes.” Charlotte’s mouth dropped, and she was unsure if this was a moment to feel flattered or confused. “Um… Thanks?” Matty let out a little cheer, “I want to eat her toes next!”“Oh my,” Henry chuckled, appearing next to James, “Have we really reached that level of hunger?” James rolled his eyes. “What did you do with the boy?” Henry shook his head, “I made him apologize to Romy and then help his father with dinner.” Turning his gaze on Charlotte, the man continued, “He owes you an apology next.” “No,” Lotte hastily injected, “Please don’t make him do that… It’s humiliating, and that is the last thing I want Brandon to feel
The silence that fell over the room was deafening. No one knew where to look as everyone’s gaze drifted from either David, Brandon, Romy, or Lotte. Charlotte had nervously turned to her Aunt, praying that Romy would think of something clever to say to break the tension - she could normally depend on her for that… … Not this time. After another minute of painstaking silence, Uncle James came to the rescue. Removing his arm from around his sweetheart, he rose calmly and made his way around the game table to Brandon’s seat. As if the 13-year-old weighed no more than a family bag of peanuts, he had the boy over his shoulder and hauled him out of the livingroom. Henry, still moving a million miles a minute, trailed after his son and grandson, a very stern look on his gentle face. Clearing his throat, David glanced from Romy to Lotte, as if he wasn’t sure who to apologize to first. “He has been going through a lot lately.” The shock faded to understanding as Lotte reached out her free
