Chapter 7

Author: Cutie Kitty
The side of the urn bearing my memorial photo faced Julian.

He went rigid, his stunned gaze shifting to Ella.

Ella barely reacted. She rose numbly and walked over as though she were accepting an ordinary delivery. Then she took the urn from the man.

"Thank you, sir," she rasped.

The sight tore me apart.

I couldn't imagine how my six-year-old daughter had managed to bring my body home. Then, after realizing Julian no longer loved her, she had somehow arranged my cremation and watched it happen.

  • You Took My Kidney for Your First Love. Why Mourn Me Now?   Chapter 12

Julian clearly wasn't about to ask for Claire's permission. He slowly approached her and rested the blade lightly against her side.Claire screamed and tried desperately to pull away, but the men Julian had hired held her in place. As Julian raised the knife, Claire shouted, "If I die, Diana will truly be gone!"The words came out in a panicked rush.Julian froze, his hand suspended in midair. "What do you mean?"Claire shouted frantically, "As long as I'm alive, this kidney proves that part of her is still here. If you take it out, it'll be nothing more than an organ, and the last living part of Diana will be gone forever."Let me live the life she can't. I'll change. I swear I will."Julian paused, seemingly considering her words.Claire mistook his silence for hesitation. The fear in her eyes eased slightly. But the next moment, Julian tilted his head."Why should you get to live the life Diana lost? She was so kind. What makes you think you deserve that?"Claire stared at him in sh

  • You Took My Kidney for Your First Love. Why Mourn Me Now?   Chapter 11

Julian tried to kick Claire again, but several bystanders stepped in and restrained him.Someone helped Claire to her feet.Realizing Julian truly wanted her dead, Claire ignored the pain and hurried away, calling back, "I know you're angry, but Diana's death wasn't my fault."I was the one who told you my kidneys were failing, but the transplant was your idea. You chose the hospital. I didn't do anything."Besides, your daughter is furious because you're the one who got her mother killed. If Diana were still alive, Ella wouldn't have turned against you, no matter how many pictures I sent her."With every word, Julian's face grew paler.Claire was telling the truth, whether he wanted to admit it or not.He cared about Ella and me now, but before all this, he had loved Claire so deeply that he'd done whatever she asked and given her anything she wanted.Claire tried to reason with him."Julian, I know you're hurting, but I also know you love me. I read all those messages you sent me whi

  • You Took My Kidney for Your First Love. Why Mourn Me Now?   Chapter 10

Julian was already sobbing so hard he could barely speak. The watch in the photo was exactly the one I'd messaged him about buying back. But before I could get it back, I died.Julian paid the remaining balance and picked up the watch. He held it in his hands and cried for a long time before finally rising to his feet. This time, instead of returning to the hospital to look after Claire, he staggered aimlessly through the streets, utterly lost.I had no idea where we'd ended up when I suddenly heard someone say my name in a mocking tone."Diana? It isn't my fault she died young. What was I supposed to do? Someone had to take care of her husband."Who would've thought she'd die from having just one kidney removed?"Still, it worked out better this way. Saves me the trouble."I followed the voice and saw Claire sitting beneath a patio umbrella outside a bar, her legs crossed as she talked on the phone.Julian heard her too and snapped his head toward the sound.Claire had no idea he was

  • You Took My Kidney for Your First Love. Why Mourn Me Now?   Chapter 9

Ella was only six. While other children her age were still cuddling in their parents' arms and enjoying all their love and attention, Ella had been forced to lay her mother to rest and walk away from her father, all in the span of two or three days. Her little world had come crashing down around her.I wanted to go to her, but my spirit was bound to Julian. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't leave his side.I had failed to protect Ella while I was alive. Even in death, I couldn't stay by her side. The person I had truly failed had never been Julian. It was Ella.Claire was rushed into surgery again, and Julian paced outside the operating room just as anxiously as before. But last time, he had been worried about Claire. This time, he was desperately trying to reach Ella.He called her over and over and sent apology after apology, but she never responded. Eventually, she blocked his number.Perhaps Julian believed that no matter what he'd done, he was still her father and didn't dese

For five long minutes, Julian stood there in a daze, unable to move.I wondered what was going through his mind.Had he never imagined I might actually die?Had he never thought Ella would cut him out of her life because of what he'd done?Or did he finally regret that selling my kidney for $700,000 had cost me my life?Julian's eyes reddened as he crouched beside Ella and reached out to touch the swollen bump on her head. His voice broke. "I'm sorry, Ella. I was wrong. I'm so sorry."Guilt and regret filled his eyes. But it was already too late. Ella pulled away from his hand, hugged my urn to her chest, and turned toward the bedroom.Julian tried to follow, but Claire stopped him. "Give her some time to cry and calm down. She's probably devastated and wants to be alone."I thought Julian would take her word for it, as always.Instead, he paused and looked around the apartment. He finally seemed to notice how much was missing. Our wedding portrait was gone from the wall. So was the fa

She had hurt so much that she'd gone numb. But Julian didn't understand. He took her lack of tears as proof that she was lying. He strode toward her and snapped, "Ella Parker, what are you doing? When did you start behaving like this?"He pointed at the urn. "How could you say something like that about your own mother? Where is she?"Claire hid the smug glint in her eyes and feigned shock and distress. "Don't tell me something really happened to Diana."
