Chapter 2

Author: Long Journey
Thinking about the way I died last time sent a shiver through me. Since fate had given me another chance, I would set everything right.

I ignored Matthew's whining and Tessa's shouting. Instead, I calmly picked up the suitcase and began repacking.

Seeing how composed I was, Tessa suddenly shoved me in anger. "Cut the act, Christopher. You'd better quit thinking that acting like you don't care about anything means you'll get your way.

"Even if we do get married someday, I'll never give Matthew up. He'll have a room of his own in our house. If you can't accept that, then this wedding will never happen."

I'd heard words like that more times than I could count. Before, I would've argued with her, maybe even used my crippled legs to win her pity. After all, these legs were ruined saving her.

But now, I couldn't be happier to call off the wedding. "Fine. Then let's not get married."

The silence that followed was deafening.

I glanced at Tessa's stunned expression. She said coldly, "Good. I don't want to marry you either."

Tessa and I had grown up together, and our families had arranged our engagement 20 years ago.

Everything should've gone smoothly, but two years ago, her assistant, Matthew, suddenly showed up in her life.

The first time I met him was in her office. I'd stopped by to drop off some pastries and walked in just as she was scolding him.

Fresh out of school, he looked frightened and aggrieved.

People nearby tried to calm Tessa down, but she wasn't having it.

In the end, I stepped in to smooth things over.

She waved him off when she saw me. That day, she told me, "Someone like him won't even make it through probation before he's gone."

But instead of leaving, he somehow managed to capture the attention of this famously ruthless CEO, so much so that she couldn't stop doting on him. She even went so far as to end our child's life, all for him.

She searched my eyes for jealousy, but when she found only resolve, a flicker of panic crossed her face. She reached out, trying to touch my face.

And that was when Matthew spoke up. "Ms. Coleman, Christopher, please don't fight over me. I'll leave. I'll go far away and never bother you again."

He then ran off.

Tessa turned back to me with the same disgust I'd grown used to over the past two years. "Christopher, do you have to ruin my Christmas? If you still plan on marrying me, don't upset Matthew.

"Otherwise, I swear, I'll never marry you. Let's see how you explain that to your family."

Her face was gloomy, and her eyes were cold. With that, she stormed off to chase after Matthew.

However, she seemed to forget that while the marriage pact between the Coleman family and the Lowe family was hard to break, the Coleman family had more than one daughter.

The buzz of my phone snapped me out of my thoughts. It was a message from Matthew.

"Christopher, so what if you've got the Lowe family behind you? Tessa will always side with me.

"I guess you'll be spending Christmas alone in your wheelchair. You're just a cripple. Do you think you can compete with me?"

Every word in his message dripped with mockery.

I'd gotten plenty of messages like that these past two years. I'd even forwarded screenshots to Tessa. But she only brushed it off, saying that he was just childish. She told me that I should let it go and give him some slack.

She thought that she had me tied to her for life. That I'd never be able to leave, so she could do whatever she pleased.

I took a deep breath and unblocked a number.

Christmas was meant to be the day the Lowe and Coleman families celebrated our engagement.

That was when I'd be giving Tessa a gift she'd never forget.

Hazel unscrewed a bottle of water and poured it straight over Tessa's head.Tessa jolted awake, blinking in confusion for a moment. The second she saw me, she shot up in excitement."Chris, I finally found you. Why did you change the passcode to the house? I've already cleared things up with Matthew. From now on, there won't be a third person between us."Chris, can we get back together?"Her face brightened with hope, but it vanished the moment she saw my blank expression."Chris, did you forget that I've always been the one you love? We used to be so close. Do you think Hazel is serious about you? She isn't."Chris, face reality. Other than me, no one else will ever treat you with sincerity."When I heard that, I felt like laughing. "Sincerity? You mean the person who got Nibbles killed? The one who kept hurting me over and over for Matthew?"Tessa's face froze in shock. "How do you know? Who told you that? Was it Hazel? Do you actually believe her?""Yeah, I do. She never t

I didn't know if Tessa was telling the truth or not, but it didn't matter anymore. I coldly pried her hand off me and said flatly, "Tessa, you're out of your mind. Just seeing you disgusts me."A second chance? Who do you think you are?"From now on, go be a happy couple with Matthew. If you show up in front of me again, don't blame me for what happens."However, Tessa didn't let go and tried to cling to me.Suddenly, a shadow stepped in front of me. "He's said enough already. Try bothering him again and see what happens."I had no idea when Hazel appeared, or how much she had overheard. Her face showed no emotion, but I could sense her satisfaction underneath. And why wouldn't she be? She had finally secured her place as the Coleman family's heir and found an outlet for all those years of resentment. Of course she was happy. Now, the tables had completely turned.Ten years ago, Tessa had bullied her without restraint. Now, she stood above Tessa, looking down at her like she

Ten years had passed, and it turned out Tessa had long forgotten about it.All this time, I was the only one still living in the past. My one-sided devotion only ended with me dying miserably at her hands.I shut my eyes, my fingers trembling. The memories of my last life were burned too deeply into me. Just the thought of them was enough to let fear take over.Tessa's face suddenly went pale with panic. She threw her arms around my neck, her perfume overwhelming my senses."Christopher, don't pick Hazel, please? I know I hurt you, but we grew up together. I don't believe you could fall for someone else overnight."Hazel isn't who you think she is. Do you believe that she's been obedient all these years? She hasn't. My dad abandoned her and her mom and sent her overseas as if she didn't matter. She's hated him and the Coleman family ever since."She's only using you, Chris. Don't let her fool you."Every word out of her mouth sounded like concern for me.Looking into the desper

Tessa snapped, "What the hell makes him your fiance? And who the hell do you think you are, daring to fight me for him? Hazel, take your ass back to wherever you came from!"She suddenly raised her hand and slapped Hazel across the face. The private room erupted into chaos. But Hazel didn't back down and slapped her right back.Nobody knew who called security, but after a short while, two guards had Tessa pinned on either side.I glanced at Hazel's bruised face, then turned to look at Tessa coldly. "What is your problem? Just because you hate Hazel doesn't mean I have to hate her, too."You didn't want to marry me, right? Fine. I'll give you what you want. You should be happy now that you finally get to stay with Matthew forever."Tessa bit her lip. For someone who always acted untouchable, she suddenly looked wounded and small. The room had turned into a mess, so the hotel manager moved us into another one. Aside from Tessa and Lilian, everyone else was pleased with the arrang

As soon as the woman walked in, the whole room's gaze shifted to her.I looked at her, then turned to Tessa and smiled. "Tessa, you're not the only daughter of the Coleman family. There's no way I'm backing out of this engagement, but I can choose who I marry."Tessa's pupils shrank, suspicion flickering across her face. "Christopher, what are you trying to do?"I ignored her and smiled at Hazel Coleman. It had been years, but she was even more striking now. Aside from those same unreadable eyes, she carried no trace of who she once was.I took her hand, faced the room, and said, "Brandon, Lilian, since Tessa's heart belongs to someone else, there's no point in forcing this marriage. As for Hazel and me, we've long had feelings for each other. So why not let me marry her instead? That way, both families will still get what they want."The room erupted in mixed reactions.Brandon kept a neutral face, but Lilian jumped to her feet. She was the first to object."No. Absolutely not

The moment Tessa left, I went straight to the hospital. She had promised me that she'd be there for me that day for the operation, but she'd forgotten about it completely.Right before the anesthesia took hold, I received a text message from her.It read, "Chris, what I said earlier was entirely out of anger. Don't worry. I'll definitely marry you. I'll be back on Christmas Day. Wait for me."As for Matthew, just pretend he doesn't exist. I've already talked to him, and he promised he won't interfere with our life anymore."I looked at her messages, then coldly turned my phone off.For the past two years, she had fought against this engagement again and again, all for Matthew.I had been ready to go abroad and set her free. But on the day of my departure, she ran to the airport, crying, begging me to stay. That day, we lost control, and out of that recklessness, she became pregnant. But later, just so Matthew wouldn't feel pressured when being with her, she quietly ended the p
