Chapter 10

She could tell that this was an expensive car at first glance. Furthermore, that man looked like a muscular bodyguard and he did not seem like an ordinary person at all. She was momentarily stunned, then walked ahead hesitantly. The car rear window wound down, revealing a face with unrivalled good looks.

Edward nodded at her. “Hello, Miss Carraway. You’ve very punctual.”

Vivian eyed him cautiously. Upon closer inspection, he did not look exactly like that criminal. His face was more exquisite. His features were clearly defined, his gaze was gentle, and he possessed a kind of serenity that came from good upbringing in the corners of his eyes and the tips of his brows. There was no sign of malice or ruthlessness.

“I’m sorry for making you come back. It’s just that I’ll be leaving the country tomorrow, and won’t be back for a while, so I’d like to get Noelle’s procedures done by today,” Edward said, gesturing towards his assistant to hand the file over to Vivian. “Please have a look and see if I’ve missed out on anything.”

She scanned the documents in the file. “You’ll have to come with me to get the dean’s signature. Then, we can send it up to the administration for approval.”

Edward nodded. His assistant stepped forward and opened the car door for him. This was when she realized that he was dressed in formal attire. He wore a neat suit that exuded an aristocratic mien like those finance moguls who could grace magazine covers. “I’ve just come from a meeting,” he explained carelessly as if he had noticed her measuring stare.

He followed her to the administration area, strolling beside her. “You look rather young, Miss Carraway. Did you just finish university?” he asked, making casual small talk.

Actually, she was 27 years old. She started her studies early and had finished her postgraduate studies more than four years ago. However, she was not interested in chatting with him, so she curled the corners of her lips and displayed a small smile.

“No,” she replied shortly.

She walked very quickly, even faster than him, who was taller than her and had longer legs. She marched even faster as they headed upstairs, achieving close to a slow jog. She only realized that he had stopped following her by the time she reached the corner of the stairs. Turning around to look at him, she was unable to help feeling surprised.

He was still standing downstairs. He lifted his head and looked blankly at her, “Miss Carraway, I’m not in that much of a rush.”

Vivian felt a little embarrassed, and realized that she may have gone overboard. However, she was really afraid of him despite knowing that he had nothing to do with that criminal. However, whenever she heard his voice and looked at him, she could not contain her fear. Her ability to speak to him like a normal person and contain her urge to scream or run away was the result of her painstaking efforts.

She did not reply and simply waited for him at the corner of the stairs.

He leisurely made his way upstairs. Just as he was about to pass her, he suddenly said, “I’m really curious. Why are you so afraid of me?”

“You’re mistaken.” She lowered her head, refusing to look at him. She paused for a moment, then explained, “I have some urgent matters to deal with, and I could not help feeling slightly anxious.”

“Oh, I see.” He nodded gently, then said, “I apologize, Miss Carraway, for making you drop everything and coming back here just for this.”

She forced a smile. “It’s not a problem. This is my job.”

The application was managed smoothly. The dean happened to be around, and the documents that Edward Levin had prepared were in order. After a flourishing stroke of his signature, Vivian led Edward out of the office. “Now, you just need to send it off to the administration office, wait for their approval, and we’re done.”
