Chapter 1

With only a month left until the wedding, Angela Thompson wasn't sure if she should still proceed with it.

The reason?

Well, her fiancé, Carl Swain, wanted to have a child with Lucy Hogg, the widow of his deceased friend, Keith Harris.

Carl explained, "Keith was my best friend. He left us so suddenly, and Lucy is all alone now. She nearly took her own life several times. She'll probably be able to move on with her life if she has a child by her side."

Angela still couldn't quite wrap her head around the situation. She asked, "If Lucy wants a child, she can either adopt one or marry someone else. She can even find a suitable donor from a sperm bank. Why must you be the father of her child?"

"Before Keith died, he asked me to take care of Lucy on his behalf," Carl replied. "In any case, Lucy doesn't know anyone else in Sherrington. I'm the only one she can rely on."

"Carl, don't you find this whole thing utterly ridiculous?"

"I'll only be donating my sperm for her IVF procedure. It's not like I'll be getting in bed with her. I'm still going to marry you," Carl declared.

After having known Carl for 15 years and dated him for 13 of them, Angela finally got to marry him—only for fate to play this cruel trick on her.

"What will the child call you?" Angela asked. "Carl or Dad?"

Expression shifting uneasily, Carl snapped, "The child can call me whatever he wants. I don't mind."

Angela couldn't possibly agree to this request, and for that reason, Carl had been giving her the cold shoulder for several months now.

"Think it over some more," Carl said. "Lucy hasn't been doing too well lately. I'm scared she might do something silly, so I need to spend the next few days with her to look out for her. I'll be back for the wedding."

Just like that, he left with two massive suitcases in tow. He'd taken all of his clothes and daily necessities with him.

Angela looked around the empty house, which had been decorated for their wedding. The colorful decorations looked like a mockery to her now.

Just then, her phone rang. It was a call from the bridal studio, which she answered.

"Good day, Ms. Thompson. Could you please send me the measurements for you and Mr. Swain? I'll do my best to have the tailors prepare your wedding gown and Mr. Swain's wedding suit as soon as possible."

Angela knew her measurements, of course, but she didn't have Carl's. She called him up, and he answered surprisingly quickly.

"Have you thought things through?" he asked.

Another voice came through the phone. It was a seductive voice, asking, "Who is it?"

Angela recognized that voice. It belonged to Lucy, Keith's widow.

"It's nobody," Carl responded to Lucy.

"Who's calling you right when the movie gets to the exciting part? How annoying."

After hearing Lucy's voice, Angela laughed. "You're watching a movie with Lucy, huh? Didn't you say she's been feeling so depressed that she's on the verge of taking her own life?"

Riled up, Carl retorted, "I brought Lucy out to cheer her up! How is she supposed to move on from Keith's death if she stays at home all day long?"

What a seemingly justifiable explanation that was, but it was just as absurd as his intention of having a child with Lucy.

"Fine. Have fun with your movie. I'm ending the call now," Angela said.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Angela? Why did you call me if you had nothing to say? Are you just trying to throw a tantrum?"

"Carl, do you still plan on going through with our wedding?" Angela asked.

"Regardless of whether we get married, I'm still going to have a child with Lucy. I'm determined to make sure Keith's family name lives on."

"Alright, then."

"You're agreeing to it?"

"Sure."

"See? That wasn't so hard. Relax. I'll show up on time for the wedding—"

Angela dropped the call before Carl could finish speaking.

Since being married or not had no impact on Carl's decision to have a child with Lucy, it was only right to make things fair to everyone.

Sure Angela was going to get married—but to a different groom.

Dressed in a hospital gown, Lucy began to wail and throw a huge tantrum. When she saw people stopping to see what was happening, she seized this chance to put on a pity act."Norman dumped me ages ago! Once he found out I lost the baby, he took all of our money and fled. Who knows where he is now? At the very least, I talked him out of suing you. Otherwise, you might be in prison right now. Just forgive me on account of that…"Carl was her final hope. If he abandoned her too, she would be in dire straits. She wouldn't even be able to afford her medical bills.Among the spectators was a nurse who'd witnessed the conflict between Carl, Norman, and Lucy months ago."I thought you guys even lodged a police report over what happened," she remarked in puzzlement. "Why are you still together now?"Gossip always spread like wildfire. The other people heard snippets regarding the incident as well.Feeling humiliated, Carl paid no further attention to Lucy. When she grabbed his pants, he k

Angela was stunned by what could be accomplished with money. Never would she have even dreamed of such lavishness.Touched, she hugged Julian and said sincerely, "Thank you, darling."This was her first time being this affectionate with Julian. Heart stirring, he asked hoarsely, "How do you plan on thanking me?"…On one fateful night, three months later, Angela exited the bathroom with a sigh.Even now, Julian cherished her just as much as he did on their wedding day, if not more. He immediately expressed his concern. "Are you feeling unwell because of your period? I'll make you a cup of chamomile tea."He was still as familiar with her cycle as ever.Shaking her head, Angela replied, "I wish it were my period. I think… we need to go to the hospital and take a look. We shouldn't have bothered with birth control, after all."Truth be told, she was mentally prepared for this.To make up for the years they'd missed out on, Julian saw to it that Angela barely ever got a good ni

Soon, the music from the ballroom overpowered the commotion of the women beating up Carl.Once Julian and Angela finished their kiss, the officiant said helplessly, "Now that the bride has kissed the groom, the groom may now kiss the bride."Angela was panting slightly. Her lipstick was all smudged.Feeling a tug in his heart, Julian bent down and gave her the gentlest of kisses. When they parted once more, they could see the joy shining in each other's eyes. With how grand the ceremony was, it only stood to reason that the reception was just as magnificent. To celebrate the occasion, Julian even opened up his family's private wine cellar and allowed his friends to bring out his entire collection.Julian and Angela went from table to table, accepting toasts and well wishes from their friends and family. As the wine bottles slowly emptied, he felt a happiness he'd never felt before.Angela had a fairly low alcohol tolerance. She only had a glass of wine with both of their parents.

Countless miniature crystal lights hung from the ceiling, creating the look of a starry sky. Even the paintings on the walls were said to be the original masterpieces by famed artists. With her friends by her side, Angela made her way across the red carpet until she arrived in front of Fred.Fred's eyes were red with emotion as he took Angela by the hand and walked her down the aisle that was covered with rose petals. Once he led her over to Julian, he said in a shaky voice, "Please take good care of her from now on."With each movement conveying just how much he cherished her, Julian took Angela's hand and lifted her in his arms. All the guests exclaimed as they watched while he carried her bridal style up to the altar. The stairs that led up to the altar didn't prove to be an obstacle for him. He even made sure to hold the hem of her gown to make sure it didn't catch on anything.Angela instinctively wrapped her arms around his shoulders for support. In doing so, she caught her

"I'm here," Carl shouted as he rushed out of the room. He ran right into Julian and Angela, who were holding hands while standing at the counter to fill out a form. Neither one noticed his presence. They were here to collect the special event permit for their wedding ceremony. At last, Carl had to accept that Angela was being serious the whole time. Still in disbelief, he approached them and questioned, "What are you doing?"Shielding Angela defensively, Julian said with a frown, "We're getting married, so we came to get the event permit for our wedding. This is none of your business."That last sentence struck a nerve with Carl."I won't allow it!"He came to the abrupt realization that he'd made a huge mistake. No one other than Angela could ever love him and support him the way she did.Unmoved, Angela continued to complete the necessary paperwork. Carl wanted to snatch the document away from her and rip it to pieces, but the look in Julian's eyes terrified him. He dared no

Carl was outraged. To make Angela regret everything, he didn't even bother waiting until his swelling went down before he headed to the hospital to visit Lucy.Angela had snarkily said she hoped the two would have a baby together soon, hadn't she? Well, he was going to prove to her that she was the one who couldn't be without him, while he would have a far better life once he'd gotten rid of her.Lucy was pregnant, but her pregnancy was a little unstable, so she had to be hospitalized for better care. Carl decided to take a few photos of them together and flaunt their relationship.Brimming with self-confidence, Carl went to the VIP hospital room he'd booked for Lucy.
