LOGINLila’s POV
I didn't sleep at all. I just sat on the edge of my bed all night, staring at the envelope like it was a live bomb.
When the sun finally peeked through my blinds, the reality of what was happening hit me so hard I felt sick.
I grabbed my keys, threw on some random clothes, and drove straight to my parents' house. I didn't even care if my dad was back from the hospital yet. I needed answers and I needed them now.
When I pulled up, I saw him out in the backyard. The grass was totally dead, dried up and brown from months of neglect because we couldn't pay the water bill.
He was digging aimlessly in the dirt with an old rusted shovel, not planting anything, just moving dirt around. He looked totally lost.
"Dad," I said, my voice shaking as I walked out onto the patio.
He froze, his shoulders dropping right away. He didn't turn around. "I figured you'd find it," he said.
"What is this?" I held up the contract, the paper loudly crinkling. "Lucien Knight? Dad, are you insane? You're selling me?"
He finally turned around, and the shame on his face stopped the angry words in my throat. Tears were running down his face, mixing with the dirt on his cheeks. He looked so small.
"We're completely broke, Lila," he choked out, dropping the shovel. It hit the ground with a dull sound. "The bank is taking the house. The hospital is going to stop her treatments. I have zero options. I went to every single bank, every friend I've ever known. No one would give me a dime."
"But why Lucien Knight?" I stepped closer, my chest aching. "How do you even know him?"
"I didn't go to him. He came to me," my dad whispered, wiping his face with the back of his hand. "He heard about our situation through his family's connections. He offered to wipe out all our debt and put your mother in the best private hospital in the country."
"And the catch is me?" I asked, a bitter laugh came out. "Why me? He doesn't even know who I am!"
"I asked him that," my dad said, his voice totally cracking as he fell to his knees in the dead dirt. "He just said you were the sole condition. He said if I wanted my wife to live, I had to give him you. I'm so sorry, Lila. I'm so sorry. I’m a terrible father."
Seeing him broken on the ground made me feel totally numb inside. I couldn't even cry. I just turned around and walked away, leaving him there in the dirt.
I was supposed to go to school, but there was no way I could sit through a lecture right now. Instead, I skipped school and spent hours just walking around the city. I felt totally checked out of my own body.
Eventually, my feet led me to the one place I thought I could find peace: Jason’s apartment.
I used my spare key to let myself in. The apartment smelled like his usual body spray and old pizza, a familiar comfort that instantly made me want to cry.
He was sitting on the couch playing a video game, but the second he saw my face, he dropped the controller.
"Lila? Babe, what's wrong? You look like your soul’s been drained outta you," he said, jumping up and wrapping his arms around me.
For a second, I just hid my face in his chest, soaking in his warmth. "Jason, something horrible is happening. My dad... we're losing everything."
"Whoa, hey, slow down," he said, pulling back to look at me, a relieved smile crossed his face. "Is that it? Look, I told you, you can move in here. We can sort out the money. I can get a second job at the shop. My family has money; I can ask around."
"No, Jason, you don't understand," I choked out, the tears finally spilling over. "It's already done. The debt is too high. My dad found a benefactor to pay for Mom's treatments."
"Well, that's great news, right?" He frowned, totally confused by why I was crying. "Why are you crying if your mom is getting saved?"
"Because the benefactor is Lucien Knight."
Jason froze. The relief on his face twisted into something ugly and sharp. "What did you just say?"
"Lucien, your cousin," I repeated, my voice barely a whisper. "He's paying for everything. But he made my dad sign a contract. I have to marry him, Jason."
Jason stared at me for a long, horrifying minute. Then, he let out a harsh, volatile laugh that made me flinch. "Are you kidding me right now? This is a joke, right? You're playing some sick joke on me."
"It's not a joke," I sobbed, reaching for his hand. "I don't want to do it, Jason! I love you! But if I don't, my mom is going to die!"
He violently yanked his hand away, his eyes full of total fury. "Lucien? Out of all the people in the world, my billionaire cousin? The guy who thinks he owns everything?" He started pacing the room, kicking a stray shoe across the floor. "And you just said yes? You're just going to go be his little housewife?"
"I didn't have a choice!"
"There's always a choice, Lila!" he yelled, his face turning red. The sweet, comforting boyfriend I knew was gone, replaced by a stranger. "You're selling yourself for a checkbook! You didn't even try to fight it! You just saw his bank account and decided it was easier to take the easy way out."
"How can you say that to me?" I felt like he had just punched me in the stomach. "I am doing this to save my mother's life! How is that the easy way out?"
"Because you're a weak coward hiding behind a good excuse!" he spat, looking at me with total disgust. "You love the idea of being a martyr. You probably love the idea of being a billionaire's wife even more. Get out."
"Jason, please—"
"I said get out!" he roared, pointing at the door. "You're disgusting, Lila. Go run to your rich husband. We're done."
The rejection totally broke my heart. I didn't even try to defend myself anymore. I just turned around and ran out of his apartment, his cruel words echoing in my ears.
That was it. I'd totally lost everything. The freedom I thought I had intact, the boyfriend I thought would fight for me at the very least…..
Everything was gone. I hated everybody. I hated Jason. Above all, I hated myself for being tied like this.
Lila's POVThe dinner turned out to be the sweetest, most surreal evening I'd ever had inside these walls. For the first time since I'd stepped foot in this place, the dining room didn't feel like a courtroom. Maya sat across from us, blushing every time Arthur brought out a new course, like she still couldn't believe she was allowed on the velvet chair instead of standing against the wall with a tray."Maya, stop thanking us," I laughed, squeezing her hand across the table. "You're a guest tonight. Eat.""I know, but it's just — strange." She smiled, taking a bite of salmon. "I've worked in this house forever, and I've never seen this room look warm before.""That's because the company's usually terrible," Lucien said from the head of the table.I looked at him, honestly stunned. Collar unbuttoned, actual smile on his face, sipping wine like a regular guy instead of the man the entire business world tiptoed around. Even Vivienne behaved — mostly glaring at her vegetables, one look fr
Lucien's POVSeeing the pure joy on Lila's face when she told me about her mother's scans was something I knew I'd never forget. For the first time since she'd signed our contract, the guarded look in her eyes had completely vanished, replaced by something radiant that tightened my chest in a way that had nothing to do with corporate metrics or legal agreements. She was still gripping my shirt, breathing fast, and looking down at her, I felt a fierce urge to keep that smile on her face for as long as I possibly could.I'd spent years learning to read people across a boardroom table — knowing exactly which smile was calculated and which one wasn't. Hers wasn't calculated. It was the first completely unguarded thing I'd seen from her since the day she signed those papers, and something about that made me want to protect it at any cost."We should celebrate," I said, my hands still resting on her shoulders to steady her.She blinked up at me, lashes still wet. "Celebrate? How?""A privat
Lila's POVAgainst all odds, the cookies actually turned out amazing. The warm scent of melted chocolate and vanilla was still clinging to my hair as I walked down the quiet corridor of the ground floor, carrying the heavy ceramic plate with both hands, staring down at the golden-brown cookies with a ridiculous amount of pride. They didn't look anything like the lumpy, half-burnt disaster I'd almost created before Lucien rolled up his sleeves and rescued the batch.I headed for the utility room, where Maya was supposed to be finishing her evening chores. Part of me still couldn't believe I'd pulled this off. A week ago I couldn't boil water without setting off the smoke detector, and now I was walking around this mansion like some kind of domestic genius over a plate of cookies. Small victories, but I'd take them.I pushed the door open, the smell of lavender detergent and fresh steam hitting my face. Maya stood at the folding table, humming quietly, stacking crisp white sheets into a
Lucien's POVI was sitting in my study, staring at a stack of acquisition files, when my phone rang. The family doctor."Mr. Knight," he began, professional but hedging. "I've reviewed the mobility logs from your sister's brace. Physically, the ankle's healing fine. Swelling's down, structurally stable. However—" he cleared his throat, "—the home nurses report she's refusing physical therapy and instead making the staff run the grand staircase fifty times a day for trivial requests. Not conducive to a quiet recovery. For anyone."My jaw clenched hard enough to send a sharp pain up my temple. "Thank you, Doctor. I'll handle it."I hung up, tossed the phone on the desk, and stood. Of course she was doing this. I'd given her a week to recover in peace and she'd spent it turning my household into her personal circus. I didn't know why I expected anything different at this point. My temper was already on a razor's edge from a full day of board meetings, and the idea of Vivienne exploiting
Lila's POVMy online midterms were starting this week, and I was a full-blown, hyperventilating disaster.Great. Love this for me.The morning sun was barely making it through the curtains, but I'd already been awake for three hours, pacing a trench into the rug. My laptop sat open on the desk, the exam portal glowing like a bomb about to go off, and my eyes were basically crossing from staring at my outlines.Three years ago the biggest thing I had to worry about was whether my shift at the diner ran long enough to cover rent. Now I was married into a family that owned half the Boston skyline, and somehow the thing keeping me up at night was still a stupid history thesis. Funny how some things didn't change no matter how much money got involved."I can't do this," I muttered, pressing my palms against my temples. "The history thesis is too dense. The bio terms are melting into the poli-sci dates. I'm going to bomb this so hard."Cool. Cool. Very cool. Losing my scholarship and provin
Lucien's POVI spent the entire morning locked in my study, staring at the security terminal until my eyes physically burned. The sun climbed high over the estate, throwing bright panels of light across the desk, but the room felt cold regardless. I was reviewing every frame of footage from the night of the blackout, hunting for a fraction of a second of static, a distorted shadow, anything. There was nothing on the tapes. The backup generators had kept storage running without a single interruption. The corridor outside Lila's wing showed empty, moonlit carpet until the second she cracked her door open. My office feed showed the room vacant until she stepped inside, Maya close behind her. No shadow at my desk. No thumb drive. A flawless loop of absolute nothing.Which meant one of two things. Either Lila's mind had played a cruel trick on her under the weight of everything happening in this house, or
