Chapter 4

Author: Bubble Sauce
Grace probably really thought she had won.

The next day, she had Ruby sent out of the city.

Then, using Simon’s private authority as the head of the Sherman family business, she dismissed the old accountant at the main office and replaced him with her cousin, Nicholas Truman.

On his first day at the main office, he withdrew five thousand dollars. He claimed it was for New Year gifts to the Truman family.

The Sherman family’s accountant, Albert Lawrence, did not dare offend him, so he quietly sent the withdrawal request to me.

I glanced at it and said, “Give it to him.”

Albert panicked. “But Miss, that’s five thousand dollars!”

I picked up a pen and added a line at the bottom of the slip. “Mark it as Simon’s personal draw for this term.”

Albert was stunned. Then, he quickly understood what I was doing. “Yes, Miss.”

That afternoon, Grace sent people to move things out of the east wing of my courtyard. She said the location had good sunlight. When she and Simon had a daughter in the future, it would be perfect for the child.

One of my maids, Lily Graham, was furious about it.

“Miss, she’s even going after your courtyard!”

I watched the servants carry out several chests.

Strangely, I felt nothing.

For the first three days, I had still hesitated. After all, Simon had managed the business for me for twelve years.

As long as he still knew his place, no matter how foolish Grace acted, I would simply kick her out at most. But things had gotten simpler.

That evening, Simon came to me on his own. He was holding a new contract in his hand.

“Clarisse, I’ve been thinking. Going through the renewal formality with you every year on New Year’s Day is honestly a hassle.”

He spread the contract out in front of me. At the top were four words.

[Permanent Managing Director.]

I looked up at him.

He said casually, “Back then, you were just a kid. Grandpa spoiled you. Leaving a little formality for you was no big deal.

“But you’re eighteen now. A business as big as the Sherman family can’t keep holding onto such a childish rule forever.

“I’ll go through the formality with you one last time this year. After that, let’s just drop it.”

I could not help but ask him, “Did you really think I stamped that seal every year just to make myself happy?

He frowned and asked, “What else would it be?

“Clarisse, think about it. In twelve years, how many complete ledgers have you actually read? How many regional managers have you met?

“Everyone knows who’s really running the Sherman family business.”

Just then, Grace walked in. When she heard that, she chimed in with a smile. “Exactly. Simon is just looking out for you as family. He plays along year after year, and you actually think you’re the head of this household.”

She handed a pen to me and pushed the contract toward me. “Just stamp it on the first of the new year in front of the other family members.

“After that, you can settle down and get married. Simon will continue to run the business, and I’ll run the Sherman family household. Everyone will get peace of mind.”

I did not argue with them. I simply closed the contract and said, “Fine. We’ll settle this in front of everyone on the first of the new year.”

Simon visibly let out a breath.

After they left, Albert stepped out from behind the curtain, holding two boxes. One held the seal meant for the head of the family business. The other held the family’s golden seal.

“Miss, it’s already New Year’s Eve. Mr. Evan’s term ends at midnight.”

I nodded.

“Are the candidates here?”

“They’ve all arrived in the city.”

On the first day of the new year, before dawn, the street outside the main office was packed with horse carriages.

The regional managers of all thirteen family banks and seventy-two shops had arrived, along with the other Sherman family members.

Simon came late. He clearly had not expected so many people. He even joked with a smile. “Clarisse really went all out with the formality this time.”

Grace held his arm. “It’s the first time we’re scrapping the old rule. A little fanfare doesn’t hurt.”

Once the two of them entered, Simon habitually took the seat on the left. Grace, however, walked straight to the head of the table.

Albert’s expression darkened, but I raised a hand to stop him.

After she sat down, she even smiled and waved me over.

“Clarisse, come over here.

“Let’s get the permanent contract stamped today, so no one has to keep humoring you every year.”

Not a single person in the room laughed. Simon sensed something odd about the atmosphere, but he did not think much of it.

He placed the contract on the table and said, “Let’s begin.”

With that, he habitually reached a hand toward Albert.

“Bring me this year’s main office ledger first. I’ll stamp it.”

Albert did not move.

Simon frowned and asked, “Did you not hear me?”

Only then did Albert stand up. But he did not hand over the ledger.

Instead, he lifted the seal meant for the head of the family business that Simon used with both hands and presented it to me.

“Ms. Sherman, the previous term ended last night at midnight. By right, Mr. Evan’s seal is voided today.”

The smile on Simon’s face froze.

Grace’s frown deepened. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Albert ignored her.

In the main hall, over seventy managers rose to their feet in unison.

My great-uncle, Winston Sherman, rose at the front and gave me a respectful nod.

“Clarisse, as the head of the family, please review last year’s ledger. Then, please decide the candidate for this year’s head of the family business.”

Simon’s expression changed. He whipped his head toward me.

“What do you mean, decide this year’s candidate?”

Ignoring him, I simply picked up the roster on the table and slowly turned to this year’s page. There was no other name under Simon’s.

I looked at him and said, “Didn’t you always say this was just a formality?”

His lips trembled with rage and confusion.

I placed the seal for the head of the family business back into its box. “Perfect, we’re skipping this year’s formality.”

When Grace learned that Simon had handed over the seal, she made a huge scene.Instead of smashing things around, she just sat in the room and had the fiercest fight with Simon yet.“Are you just going to accept this? Are you just going to throw away twelve years of connections?”He only replied briefly, “They were never mine.”She went completely silent when she heard that. The next day, she packed up her belongings and went back to the Truman family. Before leaving, she came to see me one last time. She stood at the entrance to the east courtyard. Her face looked far worse than it had on her wedding day.“You really don’t want those three shops back?”I shook my head. “What’s given away is yours. If you sold them too cheap, that’s on you.”She was stunned. She probably had not expected me to actually let it go.But she still had to pay back the five thousand dollars she took from the public accounts. The money Nicholas drew from the main office had to be made up, too.As f

That night, Simon came to see me alone. For once, Grace did not follow. He had no contract in his hands and no ledger. He just sat across from me and said nothing for a long time.In the end, I spoke first. “What do you want?”He stared at the family’s golden seal on the table. “What were these twelve years of mine? What did they even amount to?”I was caught off guard for a moment. “You were the head of the family business.”He laughed at himself. “The kind that gets reinstated every year?”“Yes.”“So, it wasn’t just you all humoring me?”“No.”He closed his eyes and said, “But Grandpa told me back then to go through a formality with you every year.”I thought for a moment. Then, I remembered, “He wasn’t wrong.”He looked up. “What do you mean?”“To me, it was always just a formality because for twelve years, I always picked you.”He was stunned when he heard that. I pushed the old ledger Albert had sent over toward him. Every year, on the second day of the New

I had thought Grace would settle down after being put in her place a few times. Instead, she turned around and invited the Zouch family over. That noon, I had just finished reviewing two ledgers. Lily came from the front hall with a message. “Mrs. Zouch from Lorell has arrived with her second son.”I rubbed my temples. “Who invited them?”Lily said nothing. The answer was already obvious. By the time I reached the front hall, Grace was smiling and drinking tea with Kelly Zouch. On the table lay that marriage contract. I had torn it, but it seemed she had rewritten it.“Clarisse, you’re here,” she said as she waved with a smile.“You were just throwing a tantrum the past few days. The Zouch family is showing such sincerity. You should at least meet Leo.”Kelly looked a bit awkward. Beside her, Leo Zouch stood up directly.“Ms. Sherman, may I ask, did you yourself ever agree to this proposal?”Grace’s expression shifted slightly. “Since when does a young lady get to decide her

Simon was silent for a long time. Only after the other family members had dispersed did he call me into the side hall.“Clarisse, let’s talk. Just the two of us.”I did not turn him down. Twelve years of history deserved at least a conversation. He shut the door and got straight to the point.“I misunderstood the Sherman family rules before. But replacing me out of nowhere may not be a good thing.”That carried more weight than Grace’s endless nagging. I gestured for him to continue.“I personally built the five trade caravans in the northwest. The shops in Ashford will only negotiate with me. I’ve worked with everyone from the managers to the shipowners for eight years. “You can take away my seal, but personal connections and loyalty can’t be replaced.”I nodded. “So?”He looked at me and went on. “Renew my term as usual this year. I don’t need it to be permanent. I’ll keep Grace in line. “When you find someone who can actually take over, I’ll leave.”It was not a threa

Grace was the first to react.“What’s there to go over? Simon has been running things for years. When has he ever screwed up?”I nodded. “That’s exactly why we’re going to give him credit where it’s due. After that, we’re going to go through the accounts from the past few days.”Simon looked up at me. “Clarisse, I know I didn’t do anything wrong.”“Good for you.”I had Albert open last year’s general ledger.I had to admit that Simon truly had not tampered with them. Last year, the Sherman family’s net profit rose fifteen percent over the year before. He had also reopened the northwestern trade route. Several bad debts were handled beautifully. Even a few family members nodded in approval after reading them. After I was done with the first ledger, I said, “Simon has done right by this family. By precedent, his management bonus and year-end reward will be paid in full.”Grace took the opportunity to say, “You hear that? The Sherman family earns this much all because of Simon

  • Your Castle, My Keys   Chapter 5

“We’re skipping this year’s formality.”The main hall fell silent at once.Simon held his breath and stared at me.When he finally caught on, he frowned. “Clarisse, don’t let a personal grudge get in the way of business.”Grace stood up and chimed in, “Tsk, I simply said a few things about your spending the other day. Is that really worth dragging the other family members into?“Simon has worked really hard for the Sherman family for twelve years. You can’t just dismiss him and expect everyone below to fall in line.”She was not wrong. Simon did not hold the position purely because he was part of the family. He had truly proven how capable he was over the past twelve years.Winston did not rush to speak for me. He simply looked at Simon and asked, “Did you really think the family seal is just for show?”Simon said in a serious tone, “At least over the years, the Sherman family business has never made any extra money because of that seal.”Winston nodded. “Okay, let’s put it t
