Chapter 3

Author: Bubble Sauce
Simon strode through the door.

When he saw Grace gripping my wrist, his expression darkened instantly.

“Let her go.”

Grace froze for a moment. Then, she let me go.

I quickly held up my wrist. It was red from her grip.

“She took my house token and said I owe you two hundred seventy thousand taels. She even wanted to sell me off to pay the so-called debt!

“Then, she said that when the two of you have a daughter someday, you’ll let her take over the Sherman family business!”

When Simon heard the last part, he frowned. “Grace, did you really say those things?”

Her eyes instantly welled up. “Simon, let me explain.”

She pointed at the ledger on the table and went on.

“For the past twelve years, you’ve managed the family banks and led the trade caravans. Whenever any shop runs into trouble, you’re the first one they call.

“Meanwhile, Clarisse doesn’t even know how much the Sherman family makes in a year.

“Every year, she just casually stamps the seal on the renewed contract. Everyone still has to humor her and call her the head of the family.”

I could not help but speak up. “That seal was mine to begin with.”

She snapped her head toward Simon. “See that? She actually believes it!”

He looked conflicted when he heard her words.

She grabbed his sleeve.

“You said it yourself. Hugo doted on her back then. He didn’t want her to feel embarrassed about not knowing how to run a business, so he came up with that rule about the seal on the first day of the new year.”

He slowly relaxed his expression.

Clearly, he thought the same way.

I looked at him and asked, “So, all this time, you thought the first day of the new year was just you humoring me?”

Simon went silent for a moment. Then, he let out a helpless sigh.

“Clarisse, this isn’t easy to hear, but that’s just how it is.

“You didn’t like studying when you were little. Grandpa felt sorry for you, so he let you have your way.

“Having me bring you the ledgers and renewing the contract every year was just to make you feel involved.”

He raised his hand to pat my head the way he used to when I was a child.

When I dodged it, his hand froze midair.

“All these years, I’ve never stopped you from doing whatever you wanted. But when it comes to business, you really don’t understand it.”

I stared at him for a long while.

So, that was what the past twelve years had really been.

I thought I was giving him authority year after year. He thought he was playing house with me.

When Grace saw Simon take her side, she became confident again.

“See? I told you. Simon is the one who actually runs the Sherman family.”

I asked him, “So, she wasn’t wrong to take away my house token either?”

He frowned. “Grace went a bit too far. But you really do lose track of your spending. She’ll be running the household from now on. Helping you rein it in isn’t the worst thing.”

“What about Ruby?”

“A servant disrespected the lady of the house. She gets punished. That’s all there is to it.”

“What about my marriage?”

He paused for a moment before saying, “It’s just a meeting.

“The Zouch family is a good match. You’re going to get married eventually anyway.”

I nearly laughed out of sheer anger.

The head of the Sherman family would never marry out. Every generation, the husband would marry into the family.

He had been in the family for twelve years. There was no way he did not know that rule.

He clearly treated even that rule as an old convention that could be pushed aside for his convenience.

I did not want to argue any longer.

I simply asked, “What about the renewal seal for the first day of the new year?”

He froze. “What?”

“What if I don’t stamp it?”

Grace was the first to react.

She laughed out loud. “Clarisse, are you still using that to scare Simon?”

Simon’s expression darkened, too.

“Clarisse, don’t be ridiculous. It’s just a formality.

“Without your seal, are the Sherman family’s seventy-two shops supposed to stay shut the next day?”

I stayed quiet.

He thought he had stumped me.

His tone softened as he said, “If you’re really that upset, I’ll go through the whole thing with you again this year, same as always.

“Once it’s stamped, I don’t want to hear another word about it.

“Grace is my wife. She handles the household now. You’re grown. You can’t expect everyone to revolve around you forever.”

Grace finally smiled.

She walked over to him and affectionately took his arm.

“Do you hear that? You really thought you could boss Simon around with some childhood plaything?”

I looked at the two of them and smiled, too.

“Fine. We’ll talk about it on the first of the new year.”

Simon thought I had backed down.

Before leaving, he turned back and added, “Send Ruby out of the city for a few days. Let her cool off.

“Leave the house token with Grace for now.

“Be good. I’ll put in a good word for you after the New Year.”

I did not stop them.

Only after they walked out did I summon the main office’s manager, Howard Smith.

“On the first day of the new year, tell every manager from all thirteen banks and seventy-two shops to come to the main office.”

Howard was stunned.

“But in past years, wasn’t it just the regional head managers?”

I opened the roster of candidates for head of the family business.

“We’re holding a new selection this year.”

When Grace learned that Simon had handed over the seal, she made a huge scene.Instead of smashing things around, she just sat in the room and had the fiercest fight with Simon yet.“Are you just going to accept this? Are you just going to throw away twelve years of connections?”He only replied briefly, “They were never mine.”She went completely silent when she heard that. The next day, she packed up her belongings and went back to the Truman family. Before leaving, she came to see me one last time. She stood at the entrance to the east courtyard. Her face looked far worse than it had on her wedding day.“You really don’t want those three shops back?”I shook my head. “What’s given away is yours. If you sold them too cheap, that’s on you.”She was stunned. She probably had not expected me to actually let it go.But she still had to pay back the five thousand dollars she took from the public accounts. The money Nicholas drew from the main office had to be made up, too.As f

That night, Simon came to see me alone. For once, Grace did not follow. He had no contract in his hands and no ledger. He just sat across from me and said nothing for a long time.In the end, I spoke first. “What do you want?”He stared at the family’s golden seal on the table. “What were these twelve years of mine? What did they even amount to?”I was caught off guard for a moment. “You were the head of the family business.”He laughed at himself. “The kind that gets reinstated every year?”“Yes.”“So, it wasn’t just you all humoring me?”“No.”He closed his eyes and said, “But Grandpa told me back then to go through a formality with you every year.”I thought for a moment. Then, I remembered, “He wasn’t wrong.”He looked up. “What do you mean?”“To me, it was always just a formality because for twelve years, I always picked you.”He was stunned when he heard that. I pushed the old ledger Albert had sent over toward him. Every year, on the second day of the New

I had thought Grace would settle down after being put in her place a few times. Instead, she turned around and invited the Zouch family over. That noon, I had just finished reviewing two ledgers. Lily came from the front hall with a message. “Mrs. Zouch from Lorell has arrived with her second son.”I rubbed my temples. “Who invited them?”Lily said nothing. The answer was already obvious. By the time I reached the front hall, Grace was smiling and drinking tea with Kelly Zouch. On the table lay that marriage contract. I had torn it, but it seemed she had rewritten it.“Clarisse, you’re here,” she said as she waved with a smile.“You were just throwing a tantrum the past few days. The Zouch family is showing such sincerity. You should at least meet Leo.”Kelly looked a bit awkward. Beside her, Leo Zouch stood up directly.“Ms. Sherman, may I ask, did you yourself ever agree to this proposal?”Grace’s expression shifted slightly. “Since when does a young lady get to decide her

Simon was silent for a long time. Only after the other family members had dispersed did he call me into the side hall.“Clarisse, let’s talk. Just the two of us.”I did not turn him down. Twelve years of history deserved at least a conversation. He shut the door and got straight to the point.“I misunderstood the Sherman family rules before. But replacing me out of nowhere may not be a good thing.”That carried more weight than Grace’s endless nagging. I gestured for him to continue.“I personally built the five trade caravans in the northwest. The shops in Ashford will only negotiate with me. I’ve worked with everyone from the managers to the shipowners for eight years. “You can take away my seal, but personal connections and loyalty can’t be replaced.”I nodded. “So?”He looked at me and went on. “Renew my term as usual this year. I don’t need it to be permanent. I’ll keep Grace in line. “When you find someone who can actually take over, I’ll leave.”It was not a threa

Grace was the first to react.“What’s there to go over? Simon has been running things for years. When has he ever screwed up?”I nodded. “That’s exactly why we’re going to give him credit where it’s due. After that, we’re going to go through the accounts from the past few days.”Simon looked up at me. “Clarisse, I know I didn’t do anything wrong.”“Good for you.”I had Albert open last year’s general ledger.I had to admit that Simon truly had not tampered with them. Last year, the Sherman family’s net profit rose fifteen percent over the year before. He had also reopened the northwestern trade route. Several bad debts were handled beautifully. Even a few family members nodded in approval after reading them. After I was done with the first ledger, I said, “Simon has done right by this family. By precedent, his management bonus and year-end reward will be paid in full.”Grace took the opportunity to say, “You hear that? The Sherman family earns this much all because of Simon

  • Your Castle, My Keys   Chapter 5

“We’re skipping this year’s formality.”The main hall fell silent at once.Simon held his breath and stared at me.When he finally caught on, he frowned. “Clarisse, don’t let a personal grudge get in the way of business.”Grace stood up and chimed in, “Tsk, I simply said a few things about your spending the other day. Is that really worth dragging the other family members into?“Simon has worked really hard for the Sherman family for twelve years. You can’t just dismiss him and expect everyone below to fall in line.”She was not wrong. Simon did not hold the position purely because he was part of the family. He had truly proven how capable he was over the past twelve years.Winston did not rush to speak for me. He simply looked at Simon and asked, “Did you really think the family seal is just for show?”Simon said in a serious tone, “At least over the years, the Sherman family business has never made any extra money because of that seal.”Winston nodded. “Okay, let’s put it t
