Chapter 4

Author: Roselle
Three days before the wedding, Hiram opened the closet for a shirt and paused.

"Where are your clothes? Why's this side half empty?"

I kept sketching in the living room. "At the dry cleaner's."

He grabbed a jacket without another thought, then turned back on his way out.

"Oh, give Chloe a shout-out in your wedding speech. She just got back and barely knows anyone. Make her feel welcome."

I put down my pen and looked at him. "Why would I give her a special shout-out at our wedding?"

Hiram turned, annoyed. "She's my friend. Can't you be nice?"

"You chased her for four years and never got over her. I'm your fiancée. Why should our wedding be about her?"

His voice went cold. "Emma Erven, this again? How many times do I have to say it? I don't feel that way about Chloe. She's just a friend."

"Then tell her not to come."

"I already invited her. How am I supposed to uninvite her?"

He checked his watch. "I don't have time for this. Chloe's art show opens the day after tomorrow. I need to check on the venue."

The door shut. I sat there as his footsteps faded down the hall.

No one cared more about her opening than he did.

I hadn't even tried on a wedding dress.

At three, the doorbell rang.

A delivery guy brought in two huge bouquets of lilies in full bloom. Their scent filled the living room.

My throat tightened. I took two steps back.

The card read, [Good luck with your art show. Hiram.]

I stared at it for three seconds. My nose was already itching, and a red rash had spread across my skin.

I'd told him about my lily allergy our first year together. He'd even stopped a coworker from giving me some.

He'd remembered then.

Now he'd had two bouquets delivered to our apartment.

I put on a mask, bagged the lilies and vases, and took them to the dumpster.

By the time I got back, the rash had spread from my arms to my neck. My skin burned and itched.

I took two loratadine tablets and lay back on the couch, waiting for them to work.

When the rash eased, I went into the bedroom.

Only a few things were left in my closet.

I packed them into two suitcases and booked one last move.

By nine, everything was at my new place: a tiny room I'd rented for $800 a month, forty minutes from Oakwood Place.

It had only a bed and a closet. Still, I felt more at ease on that hard mattress.

Hiram called.

"Where are you? You're not home."

"At a friend's. I'm staying tonight."

He paused. "What's your problem now? The wedding's in three days. How does it look, you running off?"

"Nothing's wrong. I just wanted to hang out with a friend."

"Emma, stop sulking. Come home and get ready for the wedding. Don't make me say it again."

Like marrying him was some gift he was giving me.

"Okay."

That was all I said.

I hung up, and then I blocked his calls and texts. He couldn't reach me anymore.

I set my phone beside my pillow and stared at the yellowed ceiling light.

When he was trying to win me over, he'd said, "Emma, I'll never let you face anything alone."

Now that promise was in the dumpster, right beside those two bouquets of lilies.

Third-Person POV

The Wren's ballroom was packed on the wedding day.

Hiram arrived in a custom suit, Chloe on his arm. In her pale pink dress, she looked like she was hosting.

He scanned the room. No Emma.

The bridal suite was empty, the vanity lights off.

He frowned and called her. The call wouldn't go through.

Figuring she was sulking, he had Tyler try. His call went straight to voicemail, too.

Embarrassed, Hiram asked the emcee to entertain the guests and buy him some time.

Just then, the hotel manager hurried over with a document.

"Mr. Lanford, I need to confirm something with you."

Hiram glanced at him impatiently. "What? The wedding's about to start."

The manager held out a cancellation receipt, the date and details clearly printed.

"Mr. Lanford, Ms. Erven canceled the wedding a week ago. The deposit was nonrefundable under your contract."

I was in the break room when I heard Hiram had been fired.A coworker scrolled through her phone. "Lanford Group's got a new CEO. The board voted the old one out. Fired him on the spot."I poured some water and went back to my desk.Tyler filled me in later. The meeting lasted ninety minutes. The vote was seven to two. A landslide.Hiram sat at the head of the table, silent long after the result. Then he stood."Fine. I'll sign."He signed, packed his things into a cardboard box, and left alone. No one saw him off.He used to have his secretary, assistant, and driver around him. That day, he carried his own box and took a cab to an old apartment complex. His $600-a-month rental had peeling paint, rusty pipes, and windows that wouldn't shut.Tyler said he bought two cases of whiskey, locked himself in, and stayed there for three days.He drank until he passed out, then started again when he woke.He ignored his phone and wouldn't answer the door.On the fourth day, he fo

We set the wedding for October, Bayport's best month.Jared booked the whole oceanfront hotel. From flowers to lighting, everything matched my taste. No lilies. No champagne colors. Just white roses and baby's breath. That morning, I stood before the mirror in my custom gown. It fit perfectly, waist and all.Jared waited at the door. He saw me and froze for a moment."You look beautiful.""Thank you."He came over and gently adjusted my veil."Nervous?""No."I meant it.Before my first wedding fell through, I'd been so nervous I threw up twice.Today, I felt at peace. Before the ceremony, Jared said, "Hiram got an invitation, too."I looked up. "You sent it?""Yes. No names. Just the time and place."I thought for a moment and nodded."Okay."The wedding went smoothly. The industry gala was at Bayport's finest hotel. Everyone in the city's design scene would be there.I wore a dark green gown, my hair pinned up, and the pearl earrings Jared had given me.Beside me in a black suit, he offered his arm."Ready?"I linked arms with him. "Ready."The bright ballroom was full of familiar faces. People greeted me and cast curious glances at Jared.Champagne in hand, I chatted with a client. As I turned away, I spotted someone near the entrance.Hiram stood in a corner in a navy suit, his tie crooked, his top button undone. He held a paper cup of warm milk from a convenience store. He'd lost weight. His cheekbones stuck out, his eyes sunken. He barely looked like the man who'd made a scene at my office a month ago.His eyes followed me everywhere.Jared leaned down and whispered, "He's here.""I saw.""Want me to handle it?""No need. What can he do?"I was right, but I'd underestimated how far Hiram would go.At the dessert table, he stepped

Chloe bailed.Tyler sounded a little too pleased when he told me.While Hiram was in the hospital, she'd quietly listed the apartment he'd bought for her.It was in his name, but she had his signed power of attorney to sell it. He'd signed it drunk the year before without reading it.The listing triggered an automated text to Hiram. He pulled out his IV and took a cab straight there.Chloe was packing in the living room. Two suitcases lay open, and property documents and the agent's agreement covered the coffee table.Hiram stood in the doorway, furious. "What are you doing?"Chloe paused, then composed herself."It's your apartment. I can't stay anymore. Can't I move out?""Then why's it listed for sale?"She went quiet. He picked up the agreement. The asking price was $650,000, well below market value. A buyer had already put down a deposit."You were going to sell it, too?"Chloe jumped up, her eyes reddening. "Your company's in trouble. You can barely save yourself. W

Jared moved faster than I'd expected. The next morning, an email confirmed the client had released the final payment.Rachel rushed over. "Lanford Group pulled out. They're calling it a strategy change."I nodded, unsurprised. It didn't end there. That afternoon, Lanford Group's stock dropped four percent. Haven Capital also blocked Lanford Group's core real estate business from bidding on two key parcels of land.Word spread that Hiram had crossed the wrong person.I stayed out of it until the third night, when an unknown number called."Emma, it's me." Hiram sounded so hoarse I barely recognized his voice. "Tell Jared to back off. I can't take much more."I leaned against the headboard, unmoved. "Wrong person, Mr. Lanford.""I know you hate me, but do you have to ruin me?"I laughed a little. "You froze the payment, targeted my company's project, and tried to get me fired. What would you call that?"Silence."Hiram, I'm not here to listen to you beg. Consider this a warn
