Chapter 3

作者: Roselle
At eleven that night, a sharp pain in my stomach woke me.

I was drenched in cold sweat, too weak to move.

Hiram was supposed to be home resting, but he was gone.

I called an ambulance.

"I have a stomach bug. It hurts too much to move. Oakwood Place, Building 3, Apartment 802."

The ambulance came quickly. Two paramedics carried me downstairs on a stretcher.

The ER lights were blinding.

A nurse checked my blood pressure. "Is anyone here with you? Family?"

"I'll call someone."

Hiram answered after six rings. "Do you know what time it is? Why are you calling?" he snapped.

"I'm in the ER with a stomach bug. Can you come?"

A brief silence. Then Chloe's voice. "Hiram, if we don't fix that pipe, the living room's going to flood."

His voice softened, suddenly urgent. "I'm coming."

Then, to me, "A pipe burst at Chloe's. I need to help her first. You'll have to handle it yourself. I'll send you some money."

"Hiram, I'm in the hospital."

"There are nurses. It's nothing serious. You can take care of yourself."

He hung up.

Ten seconds later, he sent $500.

I set my phone facedown on the bed and stared at the ceiling for a long time.

The nurse returned with forms to sign.

"No emergency contact? Where's your husband?"

"I'm not married."

She glanced at me, took the forms, and left.

I checked in, paid, had blood drawn, and got an IV. All on my own.

My veins were small. It took the nurse two tries.

I sat in a plastic ER chair, an IV in my left hand, my right pressed to my stomach. Beside me, an older woman's husband peeled an orange for her.

About forty minutes after they started my IV, Tyler showed up with a bag of fruit. He sat beside me and crossed his legs.

"Hiram sent me. Feeling any better?"

"Why are you here?"

"He couldn't get away. Chloe's place flooded pretty badly. He's helping her clean up."

I smiled a little and said nothing.

Tyler leaned in and lowered his voice. "Emma, don't take this wrong, but don't use being sick to test Hiram.

"He's swamped with wedding stuff. Chloe's an old friend who just got back. Cut him some slack."

I looked at him. "I was in so much pain I called an ambulance. You think this is a test?"

He shifted under my stare and laughed awkwardly. "That's not what I meant. He's just got a lot going on."

"Then tell him not to come."

Tyler paused, caught off guard. He stayed a little longer, then left.

Ten minutes later, my IV was done. I pulled it out and stood on shaky legs.

Outside, the night air cleared my head a little.

I sent the $500 back, then called my landlord.

"Lydia, I have three months left on my old apartment's lease, right?"

"Right. Why?"

"I want to end it early. I'll pay the fee. I can have my things out tonight."

Lydia Miller sounded surprised. "That soon? You're giving it up?"

"Yeah. Everything's coming out today."

I hung up, went back to the old apartment, and hired a moving van.

Hiram and I had rented it together. It had sat empty since we moved to Oakwood Place. He'd offered it to Chloe.

Tonight, I was taking everything that was mine.

Two hours later, it was all packed and loaded.

Lydia came for the keys and looked around the empty place, concerned.

"Emma, are you sure about this?"

"I'm sure."

I handed her the keys and climbed into the van with the last box.

In the passenger seat, my phone buzzed.

Hiram.

[Finished cleaning up Chloe's place. Feeling any better?]

I stared at the text, then shut off the screen without replying.

Three years later, Bayport was home.Jared and I had a daughter, Amelia Johnston. We called her Mia.One weekend, we took her to the mall. She'd just learned to walk. "She's too fast. Hold on to her.""She takes after you.""Me? She's stubborn, just like you."I laughed and took Mia. She leaned against my shoulder and tugged my hair.At a dessert shop, I bought three cups of ice cream. Mia dug in and got it all over her face.Jared wiped her clean with practiced ease.Watching them, I felt like we had a whole life ahead of us. We could take our time.***Third-Person POVAcross the street, Hiram stood outside a closed shop, holding a bag of discounted convenience-store bread. He was much thinner, his hair overgrown, his jacket faded. He froze when he saw Emma.He

I was in the break room when I heard Hiram had been fired.A coworker scrolled through her phone. "Lanford Group's got a new CEO. The board voted the old one out. Fired him on the spot."I poured some water and went back to my desk.Tyler filled me in later. The meeting lasted ninety minutes. The vote was seven to two. A landslide.Hiram sat at the head of the table, silent long after the result. Then he stood."Fine. I'll sign."He signed, packed his things into a cardboard box, and left alone. No one saw him off.He used to have his secretary, assistant, and driver around him. That day, he carried his own box and took a cab to an old apartment complex. His $600-a-month rental had peeling paint, rusty pipes, and windows that wouldn't shut.Tyler said he bought two cases of whiskey, locked himself in, and stayed there for three days.He drank until he passed out, then started again when he woke.He ignored his phone and wouldn't answer the door.On the fourth day, he fo

We set the wedding for October, Bayport's best month.Jared booked the whole oceanfront hotel. From flowers to lighting, everything matched my taste. No lilies. No champagne colors. Just white roses and baby's breath. That morning, I stood before the mirror in my custom gown. It fit perfectly, waist and all.Jared waited at the door. He saw me and froze for a moment."You look beautiful.""Thank you."He came over and gently adjusted my veil."Nervous?""No."I meant it.Before my first wedding fell through, I'd been so nervous I threw up twice.Today, I felt at peace. Before the ceremony, Jared said, "Hiram got an invitation, too."I looked up. "You sent it?""Yes. No names. Just the time and place."I thought for a moment and nodded."Okay."The wedding went smoothly. Guests chatted and clinked glasses.Jared held my hand as we walked down the aisle. His hands were steady as we exchanged rings.Size seven. A perfect fit.A slideshow of our wedding photos played o

The industry gala was at Bayport's finest hotel. Everyone in the city's design scene would be there.I wore a dark green gown, my hair pinned up, and the pearl earrings Jared had given me.Beside me in a black suit, he offered his arm."Ready?"I linked arms with him. "Ready."The bright ballroom was full of familiar faces. People greeted me and cast curious glances at Jared.Champagne in hand, I chatted with a client. As I turned away, I spotted someone near the entrance.Hiram stood in a corner in a navy suit, his tie crooked, his top button undone. He held a paper cup of warm milk from a convenience store. He'd lost weight. His cheekbones stuck out, his eyes sunken. He barely looked like the man who'd made a scene at my office a month ago.His eyes followed me everywhere.Jared leaned down and whispered, "He's here.""I saw.""Want me to handle it?""No need. What can he do?"I was right, but I'd underestimated how far Hiram would go.At the dessert table, he stepped

Chloe bailed.Tyler sounded a little too pleased when he told me.While Hiram was in the hospital, she'd quietly listed the apartment he'd bought for her.It was in his name, but she had his signed power of attorney to sell it. He'd signed it drunk the year before without reading it.The listing triggered an automated text to Hiram. He pulled out his IV and took a cab straight there.Chloe was packing in the living room. Two suitcases lay open, and property documents and the agent's agreement covered the coffee table.Hiram stood in the doorway, furious. "What are you doing?"Chloe paused, then composed herself."It's your apartment. I can't stay anymore. Can't I move out?""Then why's it listed for sale?"She went quiet. He picked up the agreement. The asking price was $650,000, well below market value. A buyer had already put down a deposit."You were going to sell it, too?"Chloe jumped up, her eyes reddening. "Your company's in trouble. You can barely save yourself. W

Jared moved faster than I'd expected. The next morning, an email confirmed the client had released the final payment.Rachel rushed over. "Lanford Group pulled out. They're calling it a strategy change."I nodded, unsurprised. It didn't end there. That afternoon, Lanford Group's stock dropped four percent. Haven Capital also blocked Lanford Group's core real estate business from bidding on two key parcels of land.Word spread that Hiram had crossed the wrong person.I stayed out of it until the third night, when an unknown number called."Emma, it's me." Hiram sounded so hoarse I barely recognized his voice. "Tell Jared to back off. I can't take much more."I leaned against the headboard, unmoved. "Wrong person, Mr. Lanford.""I know you hate me, but do you have to ruin me?"I laughed a little. "You froze the payment, targeted my company's project, and tried to get me fired. What would you call that?"Silence."Hiram, I'm not here to listen to you beg. Consider this a warn
