"How are you feeling, my wife?" Vaeldric's voice broke the silence.

My parents had gone home for a while to deal with matters that couldn't be postponed. The same went for Abella, who had stayed awake all night waiting for me to wake up. Mr. Sergio was gone as well, running back and forth to make sure everything was still functioning as it should.

That left only Vaeldric and me in the room. Then again, who would ever suspect that Valerion's most patriotic and seemingly perfect man could hurt his own wife? No one.

Everyone believed I would be safe as long as Vaeldric was by my side. The truth was, I would rather be alone. Or at least have another attendant stay with me instead of him.

"Are you feeling any better?" Vaeldric asked again.

What a ridiculous question. How could he possibly ask me that? My husband had betrayed me. I had lost the child I had waited six years for.

And now I was trapped in the same room as the person I hated most. Even the spacious VVIP suite of the Royal Hospital of Valerion suddenly felt suffocating.

What I needed most was for Vaeldric to leave. But strangely enough, I was too exhausted to hate him. Answering him felt like more effort than he deserved. Everything had happened too fast.

Most of all, I had lost the only thing that might have made me stay and keep trying to repair my marriage. My baby.

What made it worse was that Vaeldric seemed completely oblivious to the depth of my loss. Either he was exceptionally good at hiding it, or he simply didn't feel the same grief. To him, I was little more than a trophy, whether I gave him an heir or not.

After all, the union between the Ashborne and Vermont families had already become one of the most significant political alliances in Valerion.

Since our marriage, almost no one dared challenge either family. Crossing the Vermont family meant risking access to information, education, and economic influence. Crossing the Ashbornes meant facing the kingdom's most powerful military force.

It was no wonder our marriage had become a symbol of power. Every faction in Valerion wanted our support. Even the Royal Family.

The perfect fairy-tale marriage. At least, that's what everyone believed. Reality was far less beautiful.

"Do you need anything?" Vaeldric asked once more.

"I need you to get out of my sight." I didn't even look at him. The memory of him kissing Lysara was still burned into my mind. Oddly enough, it no longer hurt. It disgusted me.

"Very well," he said quietly. "I'll leave you alone for a while and ask Brita to keep you company."

I didn't answer. Silence was the only response he got from me. A few moments later, the door closed behind him. I let out a slow breath.

Even now, I still hadn't been given the chance to see my baby's body. The doctors wouldn't allow me to leave my bed. My Caesarean wound needed time to recover.

To distract myself, I reached for my phone. Damn. The first headline I saw made my stomach turn. The news was everywhere.

GENERAL VAELDRIC: A ROLE MODEL FOR MODERN SOLDIERS

GENERAL VAELDRIC SUCCESSFULLY LEADS NORTHERN MILITARY FORCES THROUGH DOMESTIC CONFLICT

Of course. Please, continue praising that seemingly perfect man. You have no idea who he really is.

Truthfully, neither did I until last night. Then more headlines appeared.

IS GENERAL VAELDRIC HAVING AN AFFAIR?

GENERAL VAELDRIC LOSES HIS CHILD WHILE PROTECTING HIS MISTRESS?

WHO IS THE WOMAN BEHIND LADY SERAPHINA'S MISCARRIAGE?

AFTER SIX YEARS OF WAITING, LADY SERAPHINA LOSES HER BABY BECAUSE OF ANOTHER WOMAN

I stared at the screen. The media moved fast. Far too fast. Where had they gotten all this information? And how was it so accurate?

Could it be that those rumors about Vaeldric and Lysara being spotted together at a hotel had actually been true?

You journalists really were impressive. Even I, his wife, had believed every excuse he gave me. Somehow, the journalists hadn't.

A knock sounded at the door. Before I could respond, Brita stepped inside. Sadness was written all over her face. She had served me since I was still unmarried. When I moved into the Ashborne residence, she came with me.

"My Lady, forgive me, but would you be willing to receive a visitor?"

"Who is it?"

"Lord Cyran, My Lady. I happened to run into him near the elevators."

Cyran. An old friend I hadn't seen in years. Before I could answer, a tall man dressed in formal royal attire stepped into the room with a smile that looked slightly forced.

I raised an eyebrow. "Judging by your clothes, you've come here not as my friend but as a representative of the Royal Family, Cyran."

My lips curved into a faint smile. "Is my family drama truly that interesting? Interesting enough to make the news and attract a royal envoy?"

"It's good to see you again, Lady Ashborne." His smile turned bitter. "It's been years since I've heard that sarcasm from you."

He pulled a chair closer and sat beside my bed. "Honestly, I'm relieved to hear it again."

Even after all this time, seeing Cyran felt strangely comforting. Like finding a lost piece of my old life.

Only now did I realize how many things I had left behind after becoming Lady Ashborne. Including Cyran.

Now he served as the Crown Prince's right hand and most trusted intelligence officer. An impressive achievement for someone our age. If the military had Vaeldric, intelligence had Cyran. There was very little happening in Valerion that Cyran didn't already know about.

"You're receiving visitors, my wife?" Vaeldric's voice cut through the room.

He entered without invitation, instantly ruining the brief comfort Cyran's presence had brought me.

"Perhaps this isn't the right time for visitors," he said. "You should focus on your recovery first, my wife."

For some reason, all the grace and restraint my family had spent years teaching me vanished in an instant. I was simply too disgusted by the way Vaeldric acted as though everything was normal after the chain of disasters his affair had set into motion.

I looked at him for the first time since he entered.

"That's a rather amusing thing to hear from the man responsible for putting me in this bed."

  • Your Greatest Mistake Was Me   The Challenge

SERAPHINA'S POVI stood in front of the mirror for so long that I was starting to feel annoyed. Not because I didn't know what to wear. It was because I now had to get used to choosing my clothes without considering whether Vaeldric would like them.It was strange. This would be the second event I'd attended without Vaeldric, yet it felt completely different. At the ballroom, I had only been an ordinary guest. Though I had somehow become the subject of enough gossip after Adrian asked me to dance. This time, it was a formal event. There was no chance I could simply show up, enjoy the refreshments, and leave. This would be very different from an ordinary ballroom party.I pressed a hand to my forehead. What madness had possessed me to agree to Adrian's idea? Lately, I had been making increasingly impulsive decisions. Or perhaps Cyran was simply too good at twisting everything until it went exactly the way he wanted.Either way, the two of them had somehow driven me into standing in fr

VAELDRIC'S POVDamn. She still wouldn't answer my calls or reply to my messages. She'd seen them. Read every word. Yet there wasn't even a sign that she was typing a response. I'm still giving you a chance to explain yourself, Sera.One... two... three... four... five...Enough. It had been five minutes. My messages still showed as read, but there was no reply. I'd kept giving in because I knew I was the one at fault. But lately, Seraphina had truly gone too far.I couldn't wait any longer. At that very moment, I drove as fast as I could toward the Vermont Estate. What are you doing, Sera? Are you really preparing to leave me?Less than thirty minutes later, my car was parked in front of the Vermont Estate. I hadn't even bothered counting how many traffic laws I'd broken along the way.I only wanted to see Seraphina. Right now.“Oh, hello. Good morning, Lord Ashbourne.” A man's voice greeted me the moment I stepped out of my car.Cyran. That damned bastard. Once again, he'd gotten the

For a moment, I could only stare at the phone in my hand, stunned by how quickly everything had happened. Crown Prince Adrian had already ended the call before giving me a chance to argue. The screen went dark. I hurriedly returned the phone to its owner. Beside me, Cyran looked far too pleased with himself."You sneaky bastard. You planned this."I glared at him because it was the only thing I could do. Even if I tried to hit him, he was far too skilled at dodging."I was only following orders.""You handed me the phone without warning.""You were about to reject an invitation from the Crown without even reading the full programme.""I'd read enough.""No. You read the title, decided you didn't belong there, and immediately tried to run."I narrowed my eyes at his argument. The annoying part was that he wasn't entirely wrong. I looked down at the royal invitation in my hand again. Thick paper embossed with the Royal Foundation's crest."Then tell me what you know."Cyran glanced towa

  • Your Greatest Mistake Was Me   The Symbol

SERAPHINA'S POVI was finally back in my room, alone. This time, I no longer felt the need to hide anything. My room was still exactly the same as it had been when I lived here before I got married. My family hadn't changed either. They were still just as warm as ever.If anyone had changed, it was Cyran. We had known each other since childhood, growing up together and sharing countless memories. He came tonight, yet somehow, everything felt different.Maybe it was because we hadn't spent much time together in years. Or maybe Cyran himself had become more complicated. Was he the one who had changed? Or was it me? For some reason, my instincts had grown sharper lately. Everything seemed to have a motive behind it. Even Cyran's kindness. Whether it came from his own intentions or because he was carrying the Kingdom's interests, I could no longer tell."Sera."Mother knocked softly before stepping inside. I had no idea what she was feeling right now. Her daughter had returned home, stil

  • Your Greatest Mistake Was Me   Her Side

CYRAN'S POVThe moment I stepped through the door, the aroma of rosemary greeted me. Seraphina smiled proudly before leaning in to whisper,"It's been a long time since you've had Mother's cooking. Just don't get too greedy later. I'm hungry too."I didn't answer. Everything she said was true. It had been a long time since I'd set foot in this dining room. In fact, I hadn't come here once since Seraphina moved out. L Without her, I no longer had a reason to visit.Lady Vermont stepped out of the dining room, still wearing her apron. The moment she saw me standing beside her daughter, her face lit up."Cyran."She wrapped me in a warm hug without hesitation, just as she would one of her own children. And, truthfully, I'd almost come to think of her that way myself. Our families had been neighbours for years. We grew up playing together.Whenever my mother was busy, she'd often leave me with Lady Vermont. She knew I'd run wild at home because none of the servants ever dared discipline m

  • Your Greatest Mistake Was Me   Outsider

At last, Seraphina came downstairs. For a brief moment, warmth spread through my chest as I watched her descend the stairs. How pathetic. A part of me had still hoped she'd come down because she'd heard I was here.It had been so long since I'd last seen her this close. She looked radiant, free of the anger she'd carried for so long. How had I managed to take someone so beautiful, so graceful, for granted? Idiot."Sera."I called her name before I even realised it. My voice came out quieter than I'd intended. She stopped for a moment. I saw her shoulders stiffen ever so slightly. Slowly, she turned to look at me. Our eyes met for only a second. I couldn't read her anymore. There was no anger. No hatred.Damn it. That hurt far more than I'd expected. I'd rather she cursed me than looked through me as if I didn't exist. As if I were nothing more than a stranger who happened to be standing outside her house."Good evening, Lord Ashbourne."Her voice was calm and polite. It was the comp
