Chapter 3

Author: Ferrari
Three o’clock in the afternoon, Anthony came back from his meeting and changed.

He emerged in a crisp black suit, white shirt, the silver family crest catching the light on his cuffs.

He’d taken care with his appearance today, like he was going to meet someone important.

Was it me? I didn’t know.

Evelyn had changed into a dress and even put on makeup.

Perhaps she wanted her own radiant image to stand in stark contrast to my miserable end.

I hated her with every fiber of my being, but there was nothing I could do.

I screamed at her like a madwoman, but she couldn’t hear me.

She gazed at Anthony with that same innocent face.

“Let’s go, Anthony,” she said, linking her arm through his and smiling up at him. “I’ll come with you to the banquet.”

So they were going to a banquet. It seemed Anthony had completely forgotten about me.

Anthony nodded and started walking out with her.

Suddenly, the butler burst through the door, his face twisted with panic. “Don Anthony!”

Anthony stepped back in annoyance. "What’s all this shouting about!"

Evelyn chimed in, acting as if she were the mistress of the house. “That’s rude. Have you forgotten the manners my father taught you?”

The butler frantically straightened his clothes, but his neat outfit did nothing to conceal the shocked expression on his face. “Don Anthony, blood is pouring out of the attic…”

The butler was terrified, his whole body shaking.

Anthony was stunned. “Blood?”

Evelyn cut in, “Oh? Did Amelia go into labor?”

At Evelyn’s words, Anthony, who had been tense, relaxed. “What’s there to panic about? She’s just in labor. Just have someone take her to the hospital.”

The butler stammered, “But… but she’s lost too much blood. Something’s wrong, Don Anthony! It’s not just a little. A large pool has seeped out from under the attic door. Do women really bleed that much during childbirth?”

Anthony’s brow knitted, a flash of concern crossing his expression.

Evelyn quickly covered her mouth and let out a gasp. “From what I know, women don’t bleed that much during childbirth. Isn’t that amount a bit exaggerated? Could it be that…”

The moment her meaning sank in, the concern on Anthony’s face hardened into ice.

“Her theatrics aren’t over. Amelia staged that blood—fake, all of it—just to get released from the attic. Too bad she doesn’t know that women don’t lose this much blood in childbirth. She’s exposed herself.”

The butler tried desperately to explain. “That’s not it—”

“Enough. I’ll go up and see for myself what game Amelia is playing.”

Anthony’s anger was unmistakable. He shook off Evelyn’s arm.

He hissed through clenched teeth, “Amelia, you’d better be telling the truth. If this is another lie—if you’re not in labor—I’ll lock you in there for good.”

I watched Anthony stride toward the attic and let out a bitter smile.

The butler followed, his face pale, his steps growing slower.

I followed them back to the place where I had died.

I looked at Anthony, so elegant and composed, and questions formed in my mind.

Anthony, when you see my body, what will you do?

Will you still believe all those lies Evelyn told you?

When they reached the foot of the attic stairs, the butler suddenly spoke up. “Don Anthony…”

Anthony turned around.

The butler pointed at the stairs and whispered in terror, “The stairs…”

Anthony looked up.

What was on the stairs?

And then he saw it.

Blood—dried, rust-dark—streaked from the attic door down the steps like a river.

My blood.

I never realized I had lost so much blood.

I thought the blood in the room was all there was, but it had flowed all the way out and down the stairs.

Anthony froze.

Evelyn was also stunned, but she recovered quickly.

She covered her mouth and gasped. “Oh my God! How is there so much blood?! Is this real?”

Anthony snapped in anger. “Amelia! You’ve gone too far with this act!”

With that, he stormed up the stairs, reached the attic door, and kicked it open.

Finally, Anthony broke down.He fell to his knees before my body and wept.“Amelia… Amelia, I’m sorry…”No reply. There never would be again. He remembered the first time he saw me.The snowy mountains. A blizzard. An abandoned cabin. I had given him my food and gone hungry myself.I told him, “I’m strong. I can handle it.”Three days later, rescuers arrived.I smiled at him and said, “Anthony, you owe me a great debt.”He had answered, “Then I’ll marry you.”I had laughed, bright and happy.Later, I married him.I carried his babies, but he ruthlessly locked me away.In the end, I died.He killed me.I died in the attic he locked with his own hands.I died in the darkness, and he never once bothered to check on me.Anthony cried in the basement for a long time—long after the guests had left and the manor was in total mess.Evelyn still waited at the door, crying.Anthony stepped out, and she threw herself at him.“Anthony, let me explain…”Anthony looked down at her.“When did you kn

On the wedding day, the manor was filled with distinguished guests.Members of every major New York mafia family were present—the Corleones, the Barzinis, the Tattaglias. All dressed in sharp suits, with companions on their arms, chatting in the garden.Anthony stood at the end of the red carpet, his face cold and empty.Evelyn wore a white wedding dress, linked his arm, and smiled sweetly. For a moment, I was transported back to my own wedding to Anthony. On that day, I’d held his arm the same way. It had felt like the whole world was mine.Back then, everyone had blessed us.But today, it was a different scenario.Guests whispered among themselves.“Didn’t Mrs. Caster just die? How can he marry again so soon?”“I heard she didn’t survive the delivery. The twins didn’t make it either. So tragic.”“Tsk, Miss Graves is really something. Mrs. Caster’s only been gone a few days and she’s already taking her place.”“I heard her father’s a consigliere. Anthony can’t afford to offend him.”E

The pen dropped from Vincent’s hand.He said in disbelief, “What did you say?”Anthony’s face was expressionless. “The wedding is next Saturday. At the manor.”Vincent’s eyes went wide. “It’s only been ten days since Amelia died.”“She’s not dead.” Anthony’s tone was firm. “She’s just hiding. I’m going to draw her out.”Vincent shook with anger. “Anthony, are you out of your mind?”Anthony ignored him and turned to leave.“Tell her this—if she doesn’t come out by next Saturday, we’re done. There will be a new Mrs. Caster.”The door closed with a thud.Vincent rushed out, caught up to Anthony, and threw a punch at his face.“She’s dead! Do you hear me? I saw her body with my own eyes!”Anthony didn’t dodge. He took the punch.Vincent threw another punch. “The body in the freezer is her! I already ran a DNA test! What the hell is wrong with you?”Anthony wiped the blood from his mouth, his gaze still cold. “That isn’t her body. It is a fake.”“A fake?!” Vincent was stunned. “Did you go s

Anthony didn’t answer Vincent’s question.Vincent stared at him in disbelief. “You said Amelia is dead? How?”Anthony looked away. Finally, he gritted his teeth and spoke. “Three days ago, she deliberately spilled hot soup on Evelyn, so I locked her in the attic to make her reflect…”“Anthony! Are you out of your fucking mind?! She could have gone into labor at any moment and you locked her up?!” Vincent spat.“She’s a survival expert, and her due date wasn’t here yet. I thought…”“Spare me the excuses! Tell me how she died!”“The coroner ruled it—a difficult labor. That’s what killed her…”Vincent squeezed his eyes shut, turned away, and slammed his fists against the table. “Fuck!”He turned back and punched Anthony in the face.He demanded, “Do you have any idea how agonizing a labor is?! And she went through it alone! She’s dead! You killed her! And you come here asking me where she is?!”Anthony didn’t dodge. He took the blow. Blood seeped from the corner of his mouth. He wiped it

Like someone had clawed at them in a frenzy, out of their mind with desperation. In the corner, a woman lay curled up.Her hair was matted with blood. Her face, her body, her hands—all slick with it.Her face was deathly pale, her eyes wide open, fixed on the doorway.Anthony stood frozen, his mouth slightly parted. “Amelia… Amelia, what’s wrong? Don’t scare me like this…”No reply.Of course there wouldn’t be.“Get up…” He shook my shoulders. “Get up. I’m taking you to the hospital…”My body swayed, my head lolling to one side, eyes still open.Anthony stared at my face for a long moment, saying nothing.Evelyn let out a shriek. “Amelia! What happened to you? How could this be?!”Anthony ignored her. He held my body, completely still.Evelyn ran over, weeping. “Anthony… Did Amelia go into labor early?”Anthony’s head snapped up. “What did you say?”Evelyn kep
