RONALD

My grip on Catherine’s wrist tightened slightly. I hated the fact that she was still affected by Jayden. Did that make me a bad parent? Maybe… but he didn’t deserve her.

Catherine was a selfless hardworking woman and my son well… My son was just a spoiled child who needed a harsh dose of the real world. And maybe it was time I gave him one.

I stood slowly, eyes locked on Jayden, and forced myself to let go of Catherine’s wrist, though every instinct screamed against it.

“I see you made it.” I started, directing my speech to Jayden. “Although I wasn’t quite sure you were on the guest list.”

He seethed, stomping further into the hall. “You know… when Kyle told me about him seeing you,” he jabbed a finger at Catherine’s direction, Catherine flinched, turning her face away.

“You leaving my father’s office the night you threw my ring on my face and spat on everything we’ve worked for.”

Rage simmered underneath my skin but I couldn’t afford to blow up. Not here. Not in front of half

CATHERINE“I understand you have a family emergency and need me to fill in your night shift” I said with an exasperated tone. “What I don’t understand is why I must dress like a 90’s hooker.”Stacey rolled her eyes and flopped onto my bed. “It’s the south side, Cat. You walk in there with your cute little sundress and they’ll eat you alive.”She pushed off the bed, admiring her work. “You have to look the part.”I turned to her with a flat look. “I’m more surprised your boss let you get someone to fill in for you on such a short notice.”She snorted. “Joe doesn’t care about anything but money.”And she wasn’t wrong. The moment I walked into the bar, her boss didn’t even ask my name. Just rattled off the menu, pointed at the taps, and told me what kind of orders to expect. No small talk, no fake charm. At first, the place felt foreign, it was way too loud and too crowded for before eight. But once I got into the rhythm, it felt… natural. Like I’d been doing this all along.“Hey, cutie,

RONALDI blew out a breath, staring at the mess in front of me. I’d expected some kind of ploy or Lydia’s desperate attempt to get my attention but this?“I need you to tell me exactly what happened here.” I said in a low voice.Lydia stepped forward, wrapping her arms around herself. Her eyes were dull, makeup smudged and her hair a mess. “I… I came home from the bar,” she said, her voice trembling, “and the front door was unlocked.”I raised a brow.“I thought I’d just forgotten to lock it, I do that sometimes, but then I walked into the kitchen and…” Her eyes dropped to the body on the floor, the pool of crimson still spreading. “He was already inside. I think he was looking for something. I panicked, Ronald.”“So you killed him because he was looking for something?” I crossed my arms. “Let me guess, some mess you’ve gotten yourself tangled up in again.”She looked away with a tight jaw and I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose.“I don’t have time for this, Lydia. I’m running fo

CATHERINEBy the time the last winner had come up to claim their prize, a giant teddy bear and a dinner voucher, Ronald had made his way closer.“You ready?” he asked, his voice low enough that only I could hear it.I hesitated, glancing around. Everything was winding down. Ellie was blowing kisses at a small group of kids while nurses packed up decorations.“Yeah,” I finally said. “Let me grab my bag.”He offered his arm, and after a moment’s hesitation, I took it. It felt… natural. Way too natural. The drive to the town gala was quiet at first, a soft instrumental playing in the background as the town rolled past in festive blurs of gold and white lights. Then Ronald spoke.“I meant what I said, you know.”I looked at him. “About the donation?”“About why I came,” he said, eyes still on the road. “You have this way of making things feel… real. Like maybe all this political noise actually matters.”I didn’t know what to say to that so I didn’t say anything. This was just business.Th

CATHERINEA groan escaped me as I tossed in bed, blinking against the morning light. Wait…My eyes flew open and I lunged for my alarm clock, the same one that apparently decided to retire without notice.“Shit.” I scrambled out of the sheets, half-tripping as I bolted to the bathroom.Between breaking off my engagement, dodging my ex-fiancé’s father, and the chaos after the bombing, I hadn’t had a moment to breathe. Last night was the first proper sleep I’d gotten in days… too proper, apparently.I got ready at record speed, rushing for Ellie’s New Year’s party at the hospital. It was a sweet idea, throwing a celebration for patients who couldn’t go home for the holidays but right now, I was mostly focused on not arriving late enough for Ellie to kill me.I grabbed my keys off the counter and rushed out the door. I hadn’t even made it two minutes into the drive before my phone started ringing.Groaning, I balanced it between my shoulder and ear while fumbling for my hospital pass.“C

  • Your dad is mine   CHAPTER 5

CATHERINE My ears rang like someone had set off a bomb inside my skull. The air was thick with smoke, a burnt chemical tang that clung to my throat and made it impossible to breathe properly. Screams tore through the air, people stumbling over each other like dominoes in a blind panic. My heart pounded so violently I thought it might burst.I turned around in the chaos, disoriented. Then I felt a strong hand gripping my wrist.“Come on,” Mr Turner said, his face tight with tension. “Stay close to me Catherine.”I could barely hear him through the ringing in my ears, but I caught enough. Still, I shook my head. My eyes frantically scanned the crowd. “Stacey… she -““I’ll make sure she’s okay,” he shouted through the screams, cutting me off. “I promise. But first, we need to get you out of here.”Something in the way he said it made me believe him. I took one last desperate look through the smoke and nodded. He didn’t hesitate. With one arm still around me, he bulldozed through the cro
