Outbidding the Enemy

The collective intake of breath across the grand ballroom sounded like a sudden wind sweeping through paper.

The auctioneer stood frozen at the podium, his mouth opened wide, his wooden gavel hovering two inches above the sound block. The overhead floodlights reflected off the sweat glistening on his forehead as he stared down at the front VIP table.

"Ten... ten million dollars?" the auctioneer choked out into his microphone, his voice cracking slightly on the second word.

Beside him, the foundation director nearly dropped his leather ledger. Flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, chaotic wave from the media gallery along the east wall. The shutter clicks sounded like a frantic mechanical swarm as reporters scrambled over velvet ropes to get a clear angle of Julian Vance.

Dominic Cross’s smirk vanished entirely. The color drained from his face, leaving his sharp jawline looking carved from grey chalk. His bidding paddle remained suspended in his right hand, suddenly feeling useless and light.

"Ten million dollars," Julian repeated. His voice was smooth, completely relaxed, carrying zero strain or hesitation. He slowly lowered his black paddle to the table, adjusting the white cuffs of his shirt with his uninjured hand.

"Ten million dollars going once," the auctioneer stammered, his hand trembling as he brought the gavel down against the block with a sharp thwack. "Ten million going twice..."

Dominic’s fingers tightened around his paddle until the plastic creaked. "Ten point five—"

"Mr. Cross," Arthur Sterling snapped from two tables over, stepping out of his chair and grabbing Dominic’s forearm with a hard, furious grip. "Sit down! You’re driving up the foundation's liability line!"

"Ten million dollars to Mr. Julian Vance!" the auctioneer shouted, slamming the gavel down three times in rapid succession. "Sold!"

A wave of polite, hesitant applause rippled through the front rows before swelling into a roar across the back floor. Board members exchanged wide-eyed looks, while Harrison Vance sat two tables away, his jaw clamped shut so tightly his teak cane shook against the carpet.

Julian didn't join in the applause. He didn't even look at the stage.

He picked up his glass of sparkling water, took a slow sip, and set it back on the coaster. Then, he turned his head slowly to look up at Dominic, who was still standing rigid in the aisle two feet away.

"Ten million is steep for a three-carat focal stone, Julian," Dominic said, forcing a tight, bitter smile back onto his lips as he straightened his tuxedo jacket. "I didn't realize Vance Enterprise was paying its chief executive so handsomely this quarter."

"It isn't company money, Cross," Julian said flatly, his dark eyes fixed on his rival’s face with absolute, crushing indifference. "It’s personal liquidity. Five times the market value is pocket change when it comes to buying something for my wife."

Dominic’s eyes flicked to Evelyn, who sat motionless in her chair, her hands clasped tightly over her golden lap.

"Enjoy the necklace, Mrs. Vance," Dominic muttered, his tone dropping into a venomous whisper as he took a step back into the crowd. "We'll see how long your husband keeps his pockets open."

He turned on his heel and disappeared into the swarm of reporters near the exit doors.

"Mr. Vance," a foundation manager hurried over to their table, holding a black velvet case and accompanied by two armed security guards. "If you and Mrs. Vance could follow me to the private holding suite behind the stage, we can complete the wire authorization and transfer ownership immediately."

Julian stood up, extending his left arm toward Evelyn. "Shall we, darling?"

Evelyn placed her hand on his sleeve, her fingers stiff against the fine wool. They walked through the side curtains and into the dim, heavy-carpeted VIP holding room behind the main stage. The heavy mahogany door clicked shut behind them, instantly cutting off ninety percent of the ballroom noise.

The foundation manager set the velvet box on a glass table, bowed quickly, and discreetly stepped out to let the private security team handle the wire details outside.

The room was quiet, lit only by two brass wall sconces that cast long shadows across the velvet furniture.

Evelyn stood in the center of the Persian rug, her chest rising and falling in short, rapid breaths. She turned to face Julian, her eyes wide as she looked at the black box on the table.

"Ten million dollars," she whispered, her voice raspy. "You just threw away nine million dollars above market value just to beat Dominic in front of the press."

Julian unbuttoned his suit jacket, walking over to the glass table. He opened the velvet lid, lifting the L'Aurore necklace out of its satin groove. The yellow diamonds caught the dim sconce light, throwing sharp, brilliant flecks of yellow onto his white dress shirt.

"I didn't throw anything away," Julian said calmly, holding the heavy platinum chain in his left hand. "Dominic tried to establish a narrative that I couldn't protect my assets or provide for my household. I closed that narrative down."

"It was a trap!" Evelyn argued, taking a step toward him. "He baited you! Now Harrison is going to investigate where those funds came from, and Victoria—"

"Harrison can investigate whatever he pleases," Julian interrupted. He stepped around her, his leather shoes making no sound against the thick carpet until he was standing directly behind her back.

Evelyn went rigid.

Her open back was completely exposed in the modified gold dress. She could feel the heat radiating off his chest, inches away from her bare skin.

Julian reached around her neck, his fingers brushing against her throat as he brought the heavy, ice-cold platinum chain around her collarbone. The cold diamond links settled heavily against her bare skin, the weight of the ten-million-dollar piece pulling slightly against her throat.

His bandaged right hand brushed over her left shoulder, his thumb pressing lightly into her skin to hold the chain in place while his left hand worked the double-locking box clasp behind her neck.

Click.

The lock engaged with a sharp, metallic sound.

Julian didn't step back. He remained standing right behind her, his breath hot and heavy against the side of her neck, right where her pulse point was hammering wildly beneath her skin.

He leaned in closer, his lips almost touching her earlobe as his uninjured hand slid around her waist, pulling her back until her body was pressed flush against his chest.

"Listen to me carefully, Evelyn," Julian murmured, his voice dropping into a dark, low growl that vibrated straight through her spine.

Evelyn’s hands came up, her fingers clutching the cold diamond focal stone resting at her throat. She couldn't move. Her knees felt weak under the weight of his grip and the suffocating pressure in the room.

Julian’s fingers tightened around her waist, his thumb digging firm into the tailored gold fabric above her hip.

"Dominic thinks he can buy your attention," Julian whispered into her ear, his breath brushing against her hair as his jaw brushed her temple. "He thinks five hundred thousand dollars makes you vulnerable, and he thinks he can offer you more."

He brought his left hand up, his long fingers trailing up her chest until his index finger hooked beneath the thick platinum chain of the necklace, tugging it back just enough to force her head to tilt slightly toward him.

"You're wearing my money, Evelyn," Julian hissed against her neck, his dark eyes reflecting in the small vanity mirror across the room. "Don't forget who owns you.”

The silver Maybach pulled up to the penthouse private garage at six-thirty that evening.Evelyn was sitting on the velvet sofa in the main living room, a notebook resting on her knees. She had spent the last three hours mapping out her sister's upcoming physical therapy schedule alongside her own remote work assignments for the logistics firm. Her fever had completely cleared, leaving only a faint tiredness in her shoulders. When the front door clicked open, Evelyn stood up, closing her notebook. "Julian? I told Mrs. Gable we could set the dining—"Julian walked past the foyer without looking at her.He didn't slow his stride, nor did he drop his leather briefcase onto the entry table as he usually did. He was wearing a charcoal three-piece suit, his necktie tightened perfectly to his collar, his expression completely blank. He looked as distant and unreachable as the day she had signed the contract in his corporate office."Julian?" she called out again, stepping out into the hallway

The air in the bedroom froze as Julian’s fingers held Evelyn’s wrist in place. His eyes were completely clear, the heavy fog of sleep evaporating the exact millisecond his instincts took over. He didn't let go immediately. He stared at her, his pulse thumping steadily against the inside of his own palm where he gripped her skin."What are you doing?" Julian’s voice was rough, gravelly from disuse, but the edge in it was sharp enough to cut glass.Evelyn swallowed hard, her tongue feeling like sandpaper against the roof of her mouth. She tried to pull her wrist back, but his fingers remained locked around her tendons like iron bands."You had a hair in your eyes," Evelyn said. Her voice cracked slightly on the second word. She hated how weak she sounded, how small she felt lying under the heavy duvet with an IV tube taped to the back of her left hand. "I was just... moving it."Julian stared at her for two long seconds. Slowly, deliberately, he opened his fingers and released her wrist

The morning sun filtered pale and weak through the heavy gray drapes of the guest suite, casting a cool slant of light across the hardwood floor. Evelyn’s eyelids felt heavy, sticking together as she slowly blinked against the brightness. The burning heat behind her eyes was gone, replaced by a dull, lingering ache at the base of her neck. Her mouth tasted stale, like copper and cheap aspirin, but her lungs moved clearly for the first time in two days. She tried to turn onto her side, but a dull tug on the back of her left hand stopped her. A clear plastic tube ran from a clear bag hanging on a steel pole down to a strip of clear medical tape on her skin. Beside the bed, an empty glass of water rested on a small plastic tray next to three foil pill packets and a digital thermometer displaying 98.6 degrees. Evelyn shifted her weight slightly, and the mattress creaked under her hip. Sitting in the high-backed armchair pulled right up against the edge of the mattress was Julian. Hi

The Maybach ride back from the Metropolitan Museum passed in a gray blur. Evelyn sat huddled against the leather door, her chin resting heavy against her chest. The ten-million-dollar yellow diamond necklace felt like a fifty-pound lead weight around her collarbone. Her eyelids were burning, hot and dry, while a dull, rhythmic throb hammered behind her left temple. When Marcus opened the car door in the penthouse underground garage, Evelyn stood up too fast. The concrete floor tilted violently under her heels, forcing her to grab the edge of the car frame to steady herself. "Mrs. Vance?" Marcus asked, reaching out a gloved hand. "Are you alright?" "I'm fine," Evelyn muttered, her throat feeling like sand. "Just tired." Julian walked ahead, his long strides taking him toward the private elevator without looking back. He was already on his phone, snapping out orders about tomorrow’s six-o'clock European equity call. By the time Evelyn made it into the guest suite, her knees were t

Julian stared at the broken glass at his feet for a long, silent beat. His throat moved in a hard swallow before he slowly raised his head, his dark eyes tracing the razor-sharp gold line of her neck down to the open back of her dress. He didn't mention the champagne. He didn't ask where she had gotten the fabric. "Clean that up," Julian said roughly to Mrs. Gable, his voice low and tight. He stepped over the wet floorboards, grabbed his coat from the rack, and held the front door open for Evelyn without meeting her gaze. "The Maybach is waiting." An hour later, the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum was packed to capacity. Dozens of high-society figures, board members, and corporate investors moved under the towering arched ceilings, their laughter mingling with the soft strumming of a live string quartet. Flashbulbs went off continuously near the entrance, where photographers fought for angles along the velvet rope line. Victoria Sterling stood near the main bar in a sle
