The silver Maybach pulled up to the penthouse private garage at six-thirty that evening.

Evelyn was sitting on the velvet sofa in the main living room, a notebook resting on her knees. She had spent the last three hours mapping out her sister's upcoming physical therapy schedule alongside her own remote work assignments for the logistics firm. Her fever had completely cleared, leaving only a faint tiredness in her shoulders.

When the front door clicked open, Evelyn stood up, closing her notebook. "Julian? I told Mrs. Gable we could set the dining—"

Julian walked past the foyer without looking at her.

He didn't slow his stride, nor did he drop his leather briefcase onto the entry table as he usually did. He was wearing a charcoal three-piece suit, his necktie tightened perfectly to his collar, his expression completely blank. He looked as distant and unreachable as the day she had signed the contract in his corporate office.

"Julian?" she called out again, stepping out into the hallway.

He pushed open the heavy oak door to his private study, stepping inside without answering. The sharp, heavy click of the electronic lock engaging echoed through the quiet penthouse.

Evelyn stood in the middle of the hallway, her brows pulling together.

Ten minutes passed. Then twenty.

Mrs. Gable walked out of the kitchen holding a silver tray with a pitcher of iced water and a single glass. She gave Evelyn a cautious look, her steps quiet on the marble floor.

"Did something happen at the corporate office, Mrs. Gable?" Evelyn asked softly, gesturing toward the closed study door. "He didn't even acknowledge me when he walked in."

Mrs. Gable set the tray on a side console, keeping her hands folded neatly over her apron. "Marcus dropped off his dry cleaning twenty minutes ago. He didn't say a word to the building staff either. When Mr. Vance goes silent like this... it’s usually best to leave him alone, Mrs. Vance."

"He was wiping my forehead with an ice towel twelve hours ago," Evelyn said, more to herself than to the housekeeper. She looked down at her bare wrist, remembering the way his hand had clamped around it that morning. "He canceled a board meeting for me."

"Corporate business moves fast," Mrs. Gable said gently, picking up her cleaning caddy. "I'll leave dinner in the warming oven."

Evelyn waited until eight o'clock.

She tried to focus on her laptop, but the silence hanging over the penthouse was suffocating. Every time she heard a paper rustle or a floorboard creak near the study, she glanced up, expecting the door to open. It stayed firmly shut.

At eight-forty-five, the heavy oak door finally clicked open.

Julian stepped out into the hallway, carrying a stack of leather-bound files in his left hand. His jacket was still on, his posture stiff, his dark eyes fixed straight ahead on the front foyer. He moved toward the private elevator bank as if she didn't exist.

"Julian," Evelyn said, stepping out of the living room to cut across the central corridor.

He didn't stop. He didn't even tilt his head toward her.

"The revised proxy statements for the foundation vote need to be signed before nine," Julian said to the empty air, his voice completely flat, stripped of every trace of heat or emotion. He pulled a silver pen from his breast pocket without slowing down.

Evelyn moved quickly, placing herself directly in his path near the elevator doors. She stood her ground, her shoulder blades square, forcing him to halt two feet away from her.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

"My office," Julian replied, his gaze hovering somewhere over her right shoulder. "The overseas markets are open."

"It’s almost nine at night," Evelyn said, her voice rising slightly despite her attempt to stay calm. "You spent all morning at your desk. You haven't eaten dinner. You haven't said three words to me since you walked through that door."

Julian’s jaw tightened, but his eyes remained detached, cold as river ice. "I am not obligated to provide you with social entertainment, Evelyn."

The words hit her like a slap across the cheek. Evelyn blinked, taking a half-step back as if physical force had pushed her.

"Social entertainment?" she repeated, a sharp, bitter laugh escaping her throat. "Is that what you think this is? I'm asking why you're walking around this apartment acting like I'm a ghost!"

"You are a contractor," Julian said, his voice dropping into a quiet, lethal register that felt completely unreadable. "You are here to fulfill a specific set of parameters outlined in an agreement. Your health has restored, the medical accounts are settled, and my presence is required elsewhere."

He reached out with his left hand, pressing the silver call button for the elevator. The light illuminated blue, chiming softly in the quiet hallway.

Evelyn stared at him, her chest rising and falling in rapid, uneven hitches. She felt a knot of pure frustration and confusion twisting in her stomach. Yesterday he was tearing apart a ten-million-dollar auction to keep Dominic away from her, last night he was sitting by her bed holding her hand until sunrise, and now he was speaking to her like a stranger at a bank teller window.

"I don't understand you," Evelyn whispered, stepping closer until she was directly in his line of sight. "I genuinely don't understand what goes on in your head. You switch back and forth like a light switch."

"There is nothing to understand," Julian said, staring straight at the metallic elevator doors as they began to slide open. "Stay in the penthouse. Do not call my private line unless it pertains to legal counsel."

He took a step forward to enter the elevator cab.

Evelyn’s hand shot out, her fingers catching the heavy wool fabric of his suit sleeve. She yanked back with enough force to stop his momentum, forcing him to turn and face her completely.

"No," Evelyn snapped, her eyes burning with angry tears she refused to let fall. "You don't get to do this. You don't get to play the devoted husband in front of two hundred reporters, spend the entire night holding my hand while I'm sick, and then walk in here twelve hours later treating me like dirt on the bottom of your shoe!"

Julian’s arm went rigid under her grip, but he didn't pull away. He slowly lowered his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a sudden, suffocating intensity that made her throat seize.

"Let go of my coat, Evelyn," he said softly.

"No!" Evelyn yelled, her voice echoing off the high marble ceiling of the corridor. Her fingers dug deeper into his sleeve. "Not until you tell me what changed between eight o'clock this morning and right now! Why are you treating me like garbage again? What did I do?!”

The air in the bedroom froze as Julian’s fingers held Evelyn’s wrist in place. His eyes were completely clear, the heavy fog of sleep evaporating the exact millisecond his instincts took over. He didn't let go immediately. He stared at her, his pulse thumping steadily against the inside of his own palm where he gripped her skin."What are you doing?" Julian’s voice was rough, gravelly from disuse, but the edge in it was sharp enough to cut glass.Evelyn swallowed hard, her tongue feeling like sandpaper against the roof of her mouth. She tried to pull her wrist back, but his fingers remained locked around her tendons like iron bands."You had a hair in your eyes," Evelyn said. Her voice cracked slightly on the second word. She hated how weak she sounded, how small she felt lying under the heavy duvet with an IV tube taped to the back of her left hand. "I was just... moving it."Julian stared at her for two long seconds. Slowly, deliberately, he opened his fingers and released her wrist

The morning sun filtered pale and weak through the heavy gray drapes of the guest suite, casting a cool slant of light across the hardwood floor. Evelyn’s eyelids felt heavy, sticking together as she slowly blinked against the brightness. The burning heat behind her eyes was gone, replaced by a dull, lingering ache at the base of her neck. Her mouth tasted stale, like copper and cheap aspirin, but her lungs moved clearly for the first time in two days. She tried to turn onto her side, but a dull tug on the back of her left hand stopped her. A clear plastic tube ran from a clear bag hanging on a steel pole down to a strip of clear medical tape on her skin. Beside the bed, an empty glass of water rested on a small plastic tray next to three foil pill packets and a digital thermometer displaying 98.6 degrees. Evelyn shifted her weight slightly, and the mattress creaked under her hip. Sitting in the high-backed armchair pulled right up against the edge of the mattress was Julian. Hi

The Maybach ride back from the Metropolitan Museum passed in a gray blur. Evelyn sat huddled against the leather door, her chin resting heavy against her chest. The ten-million-dollar yellow diamond necklace felt like a fifty-pound lead weight around her collarbone. Her eyelids were burning, hot and dry, while a dull, rhythmic throb hammered behind her left temple. When Marcus opened the car door in the penthouse underground garage, Evelyn stood up too fast. The concrete floor tilted violently under her heels, forcing her to grab the edge of the car frame to steady herself. "Mrs. Vance?" Marcus asked, reaching out a gloved hand. "Are you alright?" "I'm fine," Evelyn muttered, her throat feeling like sand. "Just tired." Julian walked ahead, his long strides taking him toward the private elevator without looking back. He was already on his phone, snapping out orders about tomorrow’s six-o'clock European equity call. By the time Evelyn made it into the guest suite, her knees were t

The collective intake of breath across the grand ballroom sounded like a sudden wind sweeping through paper. The auctioneer stood frozen at the podium, his mouth opened wide, his wooden gavel hovering two inches above the sound block. The overhead floodlights reflected off the sweat glistening on his forehead as he stared down at the front VIP table. "Ten... ten million dollars?" the auctioneer choked out into his microphone, his voice cracking slightly on the second word. Beside him, the foundation director nearly dropped his leather ledger. Flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, chaotic wave from the media gallery along the east wall. The shutter clicks sounded like a frantic mechanical swarm as reporters scrambled over velvet ropes to get a clear angle of Julian Vance. Dominic Cross’s smirk vanished entirely. The color drained from his face, leaving his sharp jawline looking carved from grey chalk. His bidding paddle remained suspended in his right hand, suddenly feeling useless and

Julian stared at the broken glass at his feet for a long, silent beat. His throat moved in a hard swallow before he slowly raised his head, his dark eyes tracing the razor-sharp gold line of her neck down to the open back of her dress. He didn't mention the champagne. He didn't ask where she had gotten the fabric. "Clean that up," Julian said roughly to Mrs. Gable, his voice low and tight. He stepped over the wet floorboards, grabbed his coat from the rack, and held the front door open for Evelyn without meeting her gaze. "The Maybach is waiting." An hour later, the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum was packed to capacity. Dozens of high-society figures, board members, and corporate investors moved under the towering arched ceilings, their laughter mingling with the soft strumming of a live string quartet. Flashbulbs went off continuously near the entrance, where photographers fought for angles along the velvet rope line. Victoria Sterling stood near the main bar in a sle
