Julian’s fingers were firm against her chin, keeping her head tilted at an angle under the bright halogen desk lamp.

Evelyn’s breath hitched in her throat. She didn't pull back—partly because his grip was iron, but mostly because she was evaluating every single word he said.

"What do you mean, want?" she asked, her voice dry and steady.

Julian released her face abruptly. He turned on his heel, walked back around the executive desk, and tapped his wireless intercom.

"Vance," he said into the speaker. "Send the contract template to my local printer. Include the emergency proxy registration rider and the Rotterdam acquisition protocol."

A woman's voice answered instantly. "Filing it now, Mr. Vance. Legal is on standby."

Behind the desk, a high-speed laser printer whirred to life, spitting out ten crisp pages into the tray. Julian picked them up, stapled the corner, and laid the document flat on the glass desk surface between them.

"My grandfather’s trust fund dictates that thirty percent of the Vance Financial voting shares release to me on my thirty-second birthday," Julian said, his voice flat and clinical. "There is a clause added by the executive board four years ago."

He flipped a page over, the paper snapping softly in the quiet room.

"I must be legally married, living under the same roof, for a minimum of twelve consecutive months before the trust distributes," Julian explained. "If I am unmarried by September first, the voting shares default to my uncle Harrison."

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Harrison?"

"My beloved uncle," Julian said with a thin, sharp edge to his tone. "The board thinks a married CEO is more stable. Harrison thinks he can force me into marrying his primary business partner's daughter, Victoria Sterling."

He tapped a silver pen against the top page.

"I need a wife who will sign a non-disclosure agreement, follow a strict public appearances schedule, and satisfy the board," Julian continued. "More importantly, I need a partner whose silence is guaranteed."

Evelyn stared down at the document. The header at the top read: MARITAL AGREEMENT, PROXY REGISTRATION RIDER, AND ROTTERDAM ASSET TRANSFER.

"You want a contract marriage," she said.

"I want a legally binding agreement," Julian corrected smoothly. "Five hundred thousand dollars transferred directly to the Sankt Gallen portal tonight, within five seconds of your signature. Another four million five hundred thousand paid out to an escrow account in twelve monthly installments, contingent on your performance."

Total payout: five million dollars. Plus the guaranteed Vancor-9 clinical trial access for Lily.

Evelyn stepped closer to the desk, her chin up despite the physical exhaustion pulling at her body. "And the Rotterdam manifest?"

"Assigned directly to Vance Enterprises as part of your family's asset clearance," Julian stated. "It gives me the trade corridor to silence Harrison's board objection before four o'clock tomorrow afternoon."

"And when we're alone?" she pushed.

Julian finally raised his eyes. They were dark, reflecting the small desk lamp light like polished black glass.

"When we are alone, you stay out of my way," he said softly. "You sleep in the guest suite. You don't ask about my hours, you don't touch my personal belongings, and you don't pretend that this paper makes you anything more than an employee."

Evelyn stood frozen. On the far wall, the brass clock clicked forward another minute. 2:21 AM.

Less than three hours until the Sankt Gallen wire portal closed.

"Why me, Julian?" she asked quietly. "You could buy ten high-society women who would do this without asking questions."

"High-society women want real power," Julian replied smoothly. "They want my name, my money, and my bed. Victoria Sterling would spend every day trying to bleed my voting proxy dry. You, on the other hand, care about two things: saving your sister and settling your family's debt."

He leaned forward slightly, placing both palms flat on the glass desk.

"Section Eight of this contract appoints my legal team as your express proxy to file the marriage certificate electronically at three in the morning," Julian said. "By four AM, you will be legally registered as my wife. In exchange, the wire hits the Sankt Gallen account before you even leave this room."

It was cold, logical, and entirely ruthless.

"My sister's care stays under the specialized Swiss team," Evelyn demanded, adding her own term to the table before reaching for the pen. "Sankt Gallen private wing. Full Vancor-9 coverage for the entire duration of the twelve months."

"Already written into Clause Twelve," Julian said flatly.

"A year," she murmured.

"Three hundred and sixty-five days," Julian said. "At day three hundred and sixty-six, the divorce papers are filed quietly. You take your five million, you take your sister, and you disappear from my life again. Permanently."

Evelyn looked down at the document.

If she walked out of this room right now without his signature, the Sankt Gallen regional coordinator would pull Lily's clearance stamp by five in the morning, and Harrison's board network would ensure no other European clinic touched her chart.

She reached out, her hand hovering above the crisp white document on the glass desk.

Julian picked up a heavy black fountain pen with a gold nib from the desk stand and slid it across the smooth glass. It stopped right beside her hand.

"Sign it, and the hospital gets the wire transfer in ten seconds," Julian whispered, his dark eyes fixing on hers like an iron trap closing shut. "Refuse, and you lose everything by morning."

Evelyn picked up the pen, pressed the gold nib to the line above her printed name, and signed her full signature in one quick, unbroken stroke.

The morning sun filtered pale and weak through the heavy gray drapes of the guest suite, casting a cool slant of light across the hardwood floor. Evelyn’s eyelids felt heavy, sticking together as she slowly blinked against the brightness. The burning heat behind her eyes was gone, replaced by a dull, lingering ache at the base of her neck. Her mouth tasted stale, like copper and cheap aspirin, but her lungs moved clearly for the first time in two days. She tried to turn onto her side, but a dull tug on the back of her left hand stopped her. A clear plastic tube ran from a clear bag hanging on a steel pole down to a strip of clear medical tape on her skin. Beside the bed, an empty glass of water rested on a small plastic tray next to three foil pill packets and a digital thermometer displaying 98.6 degrees. Evelyn shifted her weight slightly, and the mattress creaked under her hip. Sitting in the high-backed armchair pulled right up against the edge of the mattress was Julian. Hi

The Maybach ride back from the Metropolitan Museum passed in a gray blur. Evelyn sat huddled against the leather door, her chin resting heavy against her chest. The ten-million-dollar yellow diamond necklace felt like a fifty-pound lead weight around her collarbone. Her eyelids were burning, hot and dry, while a dull, rhythmic throb hammered behind her left temple. When Marcus opened the car door in the penthouse underground garage, Evelyn stood up too fast. The concrete floor tilted violently under her heels, forcing her to grab the edge of the car frame to steady herself. "Mrs. Vance?" Marcus asked, reaching out a gloved hand. "Are you alright?" "I'm fine," Evelyn muttered, her throat feeling like sand. "Just tired." Julian walked ahead, his long strides taking him toward the private elevator without looking back. He was already on his phone, snapping out orders about tomorrow’s six-o'clock European equity call. By the time Evelyn made it into the guest suite, her knees were t

The collective intake of breath across the grand ballroom sounded like a sudden wind sweeping through paper. The auctioneer stood frozen at the podium, his mouth opened wide, his wooden gavel hovering two inches above the sound block. The overhead floodlights reflected off the sweat glistening on his forehead as he stared down at the front VIP table. "Ten... ten million dollars?" the auctioneer choked out into his microphone, his voice cracking slightly on the second word. Beside him, the foundation director nearly dropped his leather ledger. Flashbulbs erupted in a blinding, chaotic wave from the media gallery along the east wall. The shutter clicks sounded like a frantic mechanical swarm as reporters scrambled over velvet ropes to get a clear angle of Julian Vance. Dominic Cross’s smirk vanished entirely. The color drained from his face, leaving his sharp jawline looking carved from grey chalk. His bidding paddle remained suspended in his right hand, suddenly feeling useless and

Julian stared at the broken glass at his feet for a long, silent beat. His throat moved in a hard swallow before he slowly raised his head, his dark eyes tracing the razor-sharp gold line of her neck down to the open back of her dress. He didn't mention the champagne. He didn't ask where she had gotten the fabric. "Clean that up," Julian said roughly to Mrs. Gable, his voice low and tight. He stepped over the wet floorboards, grabbed his coat from the rack, and held the front door open for Evelyn without meeting her gaze. "The Maybach is waiting." An hour later, the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum was packed to capacity. Dozens of high-society figures, board members, and corporate investors moved under the towering arched ceilings, their laughter mingling with the soft strumming of a live string quartet. Flashbulbs went off continuously near the entrance, where photographers fought for angles along the velvet rope line. Victoria Sterling stood near the main bar in a sle

The heavy fabric shears crunched through the stiff yellow polyester, sending strips of outdated ruffle lining fluttering to the hardwood floor. Evelyn didn't hesitate. She sliced straight down the spine, removing the high, suffocating collar completely. Her thumbs were sore from forcing heavy steel needles through thick, double-layered seams, and the skin near her index knuckle was pricked raw from three hours of hand-stitching. She sliced away the oil-stained hem, cutting a sharp, architectural slant that stopped three inches above her left knee before sweeping into a short, structured train in the back. Using the heavy tailor's chalk, she drafted a deep, plunging V-cut down the back, exposing her shoulder blades entirely. She folded the thick material inward, securing the inner edges with gold safety pins before blind-stitching the borders with dark gold thread. The stiff, awkward fabric that had looked like a drapery disaster now held a rigid, razor-sharp silhouette that hugg

Evelyn’s back remained pressed against the cool leather of the car door long after Julian pulled away. The rest of the drive to the penthouse had passed in total silence. Julian had staring out his window, his bandaged hand resting on his knee, while Evelyn kept her eyes fixed on the rain sliding down the glass. When the car finally pulled into the underground garage, Julian had stepped out without a word, heading straight to his private study on the main floor. By ten o'clock the following morning, Evelyn was sitting at the glass kitchen island in the penthouse, working her way through a bowl of lukewarm oatmeal. Her shoulder muscles were still tight from the night before, and her throat felt dry. Mrs. Gable walked into the kitchen carrying a large, flat cardboard box wrapped in heavy silver foil. The housekeeper didn't look Evelyn in the eye. Ever since Julian’s warning two days ago, Mrs. Gable moved around the apartment like a shadow, keeping her head down and speaking only whe
