Chapter 5

Author: Strictly Eden
Sherry's expression hardened. She slammed her hand on the desk and stood up. "Evelyn Ramsey!"

Evelyn simply ignored her and went back to her desk.

She pulled out a compact mirror and inspected the faint streak of blood on the side of her cheek. The mark wasn't very deep, so she wiped it with a damp tissue and didn't bother cleaning it further. After all, with a face like hers, what was the harm in adding a scar to it?

Evelyn was reminded of Serena again. For some reason, Serena looked a little familiar to her.

Nearing the end of the workday, Evelyn got a call from her father, Walter Ramsey. After informing her that Julian Parker was back, he told her to come back for dinner today.

The news was a joyous surprise to her. "Jules is back? Wasn't he supposed to come back on the 15th?"

"He finished his work matters ahead of time, so he came back early," Walter explained.

"Okay. I'll head over as soon as I get off work."

Evelyn drove back to the Ramsey residence. It was a resale apartment that the family bought this year, situated within a mid-range apartment complex in the western district of the city.

Walter used to run a mid-sized property development company. While the family didn't exactly rank among the wealthy elites, they were comfortably well-off. Evelyn had also grown up in relative comfort.

However, the real estate market was experiencing a slowdown. A little over six months ago, Walter's company suffered serious financial losses as a result of some bad investments, leaving it on the brink of bankruptcy.

Even after finding out that Evelyn was pregnant with Carlton's baby, Walter hadn't forced her to demand anything from the Shaws.

Evelyn was the one who made that decision after witnessing Walter's increasingly haggard appearance and seeing that he had to sell off the family's assets to pay off the debts.

And when she approached the Shaws, it wasn't just for Walter's sake. She did it for herself, too.

She did get what she wanted. The Shaws gave the Ramseys a huge sum as a wedding gift to the family, and the Ramseys used it to pay off the debts. However, she also paid a price for her decision.

Therefore, all of the pain she suffered now was her own doing. She couldn't fault anyone else for it.

When Evelyn arrived at the Ramsey residence, Louise Parker came out of the kitchen and greeted her, "You're back, Eve."

Evelyn's parents divorced when she was nine. Her mother, Joanne Moore, left with her older brother, leaving her with Walter.

Later on, Walter met Louise, and the two began cohabitating as a couple despite not getting married.

At first, Evelyn didn't accept Louise's presence and even disliked her. But gradually, she could sense the kindness and affection Louise showed her. Julian, Louise's son, also treated her very well. Having lost an older brother, she had found a new brother in him.

"Hey, Louise. Where's Dad and Jules?"

"They're on the way home and should be back soon enough. Get some rest first."

"Okay."

Evelyn went back to her room. Even though she was married now, Walter kept a room ready for her. It'd been decorated just the way she liked it.

Now that she was back in her own home, all of her exhaustion and hurt evaporated in an instant.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, she noticed the photo album on her nightstand. She reached for it and opened it. The photo on the first page was a torn family portrait. It was pretty old. She'd only been eight years old when the photo was taken.

Walter looked young and handsome as he held her in his arms. Her older brother stood beside Walter, while Joanne stood on the other side.

Evelyn had torn up the photo herself. She hated Joanne for taking her brother and abandoning her and Walter. But now that so much time had passed, it no longer pained her to recall this.

She flipped to the next page and saw a photo of a teenage girl who looked very pretty. She was wearing a long white dress and a tan woven hat while standing beneath a maple tree covered in golden leaves. The sunlight lit up the bright smile on her face.

With her long, dark hair that framed her delicate face and captivating features, the teenage girl had the beauty of an angel. Her eyes sparkled like stars in the sky.

It was Evelyn, of course.

Later on, she fell seriously ill and had to take hormonal medicine. As a result, she slowly began putting on weight and couldn't lose it no matter how hard she tried. She had to resort to adhering to a strict diet and getting plenty of exercise just to make sure she didn't put on any more weight.

All of a sudden, Evelyn was reminded of Serena again. Serena shared a noticeable resemblance to this photo of her as a teenager, especially in the eyes.

Before heading into the Ramsey residence, Angela specifically reminded Alvin to watch his tongue."Why are you acting like I'm some kind of blabbermouth?" Alvin protested."Are you not?"Once they knocked on the door, Walter and Louise quickly escorted them in. Heath had brought some gifts with him."Why did you bring so much with you? This is just a simple dinner gathering," Walter chided him."It wouldn't be right for me to show up empty-handed, Mr. Ramsey. Please don't think much of it," Heath replied. After taking the bags from Heath, Walter said, "Come and take a seat, all of you. Dinner will be served soon."Louise was putting the finishing touches on two more dishes, so Julian went into the kitchen to help her out, while Evelyn came out to greet everyone.Pulling her down to the couch, Angela said, "Looks like you've been recovering well. Your complexion looks very healthy. Did the supplements I gave you help?""Yeah. They've helped a lot.""I'm glad to hear that."Th

Mason sent Evelyn some photos and a video he'd taken of Marigold at the meet-the-baby party."Mari was so happy when she got your gold angel pendant. I'm sure she knows her mommy prepared it for her."Evelyn couldn't help but smile as she stared at the bubbly Marigold. By now, she'd made her peace with the situation and could calmly accept this arrangement. She wanted to witness Marigold's growth, even if she couldn't accompany her.Judging from the photos, it was clear to Evelyn that the Shaws were taking very good care of Marigold—they truly adored her."She's such a lively and witty baby," Evelyn remarked to Mason."Of course. Any child of yours would be smart," he replied.…One day, Evelyn suddenly received a call from Carlton. "I'm leaving for a business trip. It'll take a few days. Come over and look after Marigold."His words made her freeze. She thought he'd called to talk about the divorce. Based on her calculations, the paperwork should be finalized in just three mor

The relatives were also curious about one thing—why was there no sign of Carlton's wife that day?But of course, despite their puzzlement, no one asked any questions.Once Carlton placed Marigold into the stroller, Francine and Bernard immediately gathered around, their wrinkled faces crinkling with joy as they looked at their precious great-granddaughter.Francine brought out the gift she'd prepared, which was a set of extremely valuable jewelry, and asked, "Do you like it, sweetie?"Marigold stared up with wide eyes, not reacting much to the gift."Look here, Mari. See what your great-grandpa prepared for you." Bernard had specially commissioned a mahogany wooden rattle and designed the carvings himself.Rita and Jonah had also put a lot of thought into the gifts they prepared for Marigold, hoping to see her smile. But she simply stared wide-eyed at all of them."She's so much like you, Carlton," Francine remarked. At that moment, Mason pulled out the gold angel pendant and d

After sending Evelyn a photo of some fireworks, Mason asked, "Do you want to see the baby?"Evelyn had never actively brought up Marigold with him. He knew she was afraid that seeing her daughter would only bring her more pain and sorrow. But he figured that she must long to see her deep down inside. As expected, Evelyn stared at the message in silence for a while. She waited until she had returned to her room before replying, "Okay."In the end, she couldn't resist the offer.Mason sent her several photos of Marigold, some of her sleeping and others of her smiling. Marigold was such a pretty baby. When she smiled, her bright eyes curved like crescents. Her nose was delicate, her lips soft and pink, and her tiny face smooth and fair.As Evelyn stared at the photos, her eyes started to mist over. She set down her phone and looked out the window, doing her best to keep her emotions in check. Once she'd settled down a bit, she texted Mason, "Does Carlton take good care of her?"Tha

Carlton listened to Mason with an unflinching expression before saying quietly, "So you think it's acceptable for you to judge your own family—your own grandparents—like that because of her?"Mason looked straight at him."You're free to stand up for her if you want," Carlton continued. "But the Shaw family isn't who you're allowed to vent your emotions on. You're also a Shaw. You're not a child any longer, either. Now that you're running your own company, you should learn not to be so emotional in what you say or do."Mason curled his fingers as he slowly lowered his gaze, his expression tight. He didn't speak. The ensuing silence was broken by a maid coming up the stairs to say, "Mr. Carlton, Mr. Mason, it's time for dinner."Carlton got up and handed the bag to the maid."Put this in my room," he said."Yes, Mr. Carlton," the maid replied before leaving. After the maid left, Carlton noticed that Mason was still seated. "Why aren't you getting up?"Mason pocketed his phone a
