Chapter 4: The Final Hour and Kael Thorne

The three week countdown vanished in a blur of heavy preparing for the apocalypse.

I turned my suburban estate into an impenetrable fortress, reinforcing the perimeter walls with steel mesh, installing solar power grids, and parking a modified armored diesel truck in the garage. My magic storage was packed with five hundred tons of food, water, medical gear, and fuel that would never spoil.

While I built my fortress, my fake loan trap kept Leo buried in lawsuits. He spent his days fighting off creditors and bank lawyers, while Evelyn and Amy screamed at him over unpaid luxury hotel bills.

Then came the final day.

24 Hours Before Zero Hour

A cold, heavy rain battered the reinforced windows of my second floor command room as the system clock ticked down its final hours.

[System Count: 00 Days, 07 Hours, 42 Minutes Remaining]

I sat before a wall of security monitors, watching my Blood Tracking Radar glow on the central screen. Three red dots pulsed on the city grid.

Target one, Evelyn, was trapped at a downtown clinic. Target two, Amy, was hiding at a high end beauty salon. Target three, Leo, was in his car just two miles away, his pulse spiking to an unstable one hundred and thirty beats per minute.

He had finally realized the loan was a dead end.

My phone vibrated on the desk. I picked it up and tapped the speaker.

"Jade!" Leo’s voice was ragged and shrill, stripped of every fake charm he possessed. "You lied to me! The bank told me the loan was backed by a dummy asset! I had to sell my sports car to pay the legal hold! Where are you?!"

"Right where I belong, Leo," I said, leaning back in my leather chair.

A heavy silence hung over the line as he heard the absolute stillness in my voice. "What is wrong with you? Who are you talking to?"

"I am never coming back," I replied softly. "And you will never touch a single cent of my mother's estate."

"You little bitch!" Leo roared, his phone speaker crackling with rage. "I am driving to your estate right now! I know the address from your bank registration. I will break your fingers one by one until you sign over every account!"

"Come try," I said, and cut the line.

On the radar map, his red dot surged forward, barreling straight toward my suburban district.

I did not flinch. I tapped my console, dropping heavy iron security shutters over every window and locking the main perimeter gates with high voltage charges.

Suddenly, my gate camera chimed. Motion detected at the outer fence.

I glanced at the monitor, expecting to see Leo’s car. Instead, a black, heavily armored military SUV had crashed straight through the outer security barrier, skidding to a halt inside my driveway.

The driver’s side door slammed open. A tall figure in a blood stained tactical uniform stumbled out into the pouring rain, holding a silenced pistol in one hand and clutching a deep wound in his side.

My blood ran completely cold. The breath caught in my throat, choking me.

He looked up at the camera lens, wiping wet hair and crimson streaks from his face.

Kael Thorne.

A sudden, sharp sting of bitter fury exploded behind my ribs. In my past life, Kael Thorne was the cold, ruthless warlord who ruled the northern quarantine zone with an iron fist, a terrifying monster who executed anyone who crossed him without a second thought. But before the apocalypse, before he vanished into thin air like a ghost and left me behind in the ash, he was the man who had ripped my heart out and left me shattered.

Seeing him here, bleeding out on my driveway hours before the world collapsed, made my teeth grind in raw, violent anger. Of all the people on earth to crash through my gates, why him? I was completely done with men. They were nothing but parasitic liars, and I swore never to trust another soul again.

Before I could process his presence, the system screen flashed crimson across my field of vision, overriding the countdown with a blinding gold alert.

[Emergency Target Detected!]

[Name: Kael Thorne]

[Identity: Chief Researcher & Subject Zero of the Biological Weapons Division]

[Status: Infected with Sovereign Zombie Strain (Suppressing Virus via Willpower: 12 Minutes Remaining)]

[Hidden System Bound: Target possesses the Master Immunity Gene. Storing Target in Magic Space will halt virus progression permanently!]

My breath hitched. The ruthless warlord from my past life was not just a survivor, he was the literal key to the virus itself, carrying the origin strain in his blood. Saving him had nothing to do with feelings, it was a cold, calculated transaction for my own benefit and survival.

On the main monitor, Kael Thorne collapsed to his knees in the mud, staring directly into my camera with glowing, blood red eyes.

"Jade..." his voice rasped through my entry speaker, weak and desperate. "I know you're in there... close the gates... they're right behind me..."

Right behind his SUV, the main road exploded into madness.

Leo's sedan screeched to a halt outside the smashed perimeter fence. But as three pale, contorted figures sprinted out of the rain, violently tearing through a nearby pedestrian on the sidewalk, Leo’s eyes went wide with sheer terror. He slammed his car into reverse, tires spinning wildly on the wet asphalt as he fled in a panicked frenzy into the darkening city streets.

A dark, slow smirk spread across my lips as I watched his car disappear.

Run, Leo. Run as fast as you can.

Because it wouldn't be long before the city turned into hell and you’ll come crawling back to my gates, weeping and begging for food. When that day came, I would personally watch from my warm balcony as the zombies tear you apart limb by limb.

At the same moment, the national emergency broadcast broke across my monitors, static tearing through the audio.

"Emergency alert! Metro General Hospital has fallen! Biological threat spreading across all sectors! Lock your doors! Do not attempt to assist the infected.”

The screen went black as the city grid died, plunging the skyline into total darkness.

Outside, rain lashed against my iron shutters, mixed with the sound of distant, frantic sirens and inhuman roars.

I gripped the console edge, glaring at Kael Thorne's bleeding form on the screen. I despised him, but his immune blood was too valuable to waste.

I slammed my palm onto the gate control, opening the heavy inner steel door just enough to drag him inside before the swarm hit my walls.

The clock on my side vision hit zero. Then the screaming began. The end of the world had arrived.

Irritation bubbled through me as I stared at Kael’s motionless body. This man was trouble and unfortunately he was too valuable for me to throw out to the zombies. In his unconscious state, I stored him in the system-enhanced storage space, while I tried to clear my head and think about this new development.Out of sight, out of mind.My gaze settled on the outer perimeter. The section where Kael had crashed into my compound was visibly damaged. The wall was still standing, but a portion of the supporting structure had cracked, leaving a weak point that would need immediate attention.I pinched the bridge of my nose.Wonderful.The world was ending, and I already had an expensive repair job.I zoomed in on the damaged section, studying the surrounding area. There was no immediate sign of danger, but that meant very little. I needed to repair it before an infected person could climb into the compound, not that I was not prepared for such a situation. In my previous life, the infected

I stared out the window of my newly rented suburban compound, holding my breath as the screen in my vision flickered to life. The property sat in an exclusive gated estate on the outer edge of the city, surrounded by reinforced concrete walls, a private backup generator, and direct access to two major highways. It was far enough from the dense city center to avoid immediate chaos, but close enough to let me run quick errands before everything fell apart.A black map unfolded across my sight, pulsing with three distinct red dots. The system had unlocked the Blood Tracking Radar, linking directly to anyone bound to me by blood or marriage. Target one was my stepmother Evelyn, sitting at a luxury jewelry store. Target two was my stepsister Amy, lounging at a cafe. Target three was my husband Leo, his dot moving fast along the main ring road.My phone vibrated in my palm. Leo's caller ID flashed on the glass.I let it ring three times before sliding the bar to answer, keeping my voice sma

A ragged gasp tore through my chest as I snapped awake. My hands flew straight to my neck, searching for the torn skin and warm blood from the monsters in the alleyway. My fingers touched smooth skin. No teeth marks. No dripping crimson. No broken bones. My palms were completely clear of scars. I was sitting in the soft leather passenger seat of a luxury car, the cold air conditioning blowing softly against my face while glass skyscrapers sparkled under the bright afternoon sun.I scrambled for my purse, pulled out my phone, and tapped the screen. Two twenty in the afternoon. September twenty fifth.Thirty days. The universe had dragged my soul back in time, thirty full days before the sky turned dark and the undead roamed these clean city avenues."Sweetie, put the phone away."A soft, concerned voice spoke from the driver seat. I froze, my eyes cutting to the left.My husband, Leo, sat behind the wheel, looking healthy, energetic, and perfectly fine. In the back seat sat my stepmoth

Leo guided me forward, his fingers wrapped tight around my wrist as the thick cloth over my eyes blocked out the light. The freezing wind bit hard into my skin, making my skin burn, but I still forced a soft smile onto my face. For three long years, ever since the zombie outbreak turned our city into a living nightmare, I had never had enough time to spend with my husband like this. I wasn’t even expecting he would buy out this time to surprise me on my birthday amidst the entire uproar. It’s safe to say that not until he remembered my birthday today, I’ve completely forgotten it because I have been too busy fighting off rotting monsters in dark alleys, scavenging through filthy trash, and starving myself until my ribs pressed against my skin, all to bring food back to our shelter. "Leo, where are we going?" I asked, my voice shaking as my worn out shoes scraped against rough concrete. "It is so cold up here. My toes feel like ice.""Just a few more steps, Jade," Leo said, his voice
