AVA’S POV

The trap was set.

All that was left was to wait—and watch someone fall into it.

The fake merger plan had been distributed in carefully tailored versions to five specific board members. Each one contained slightly different details: the name of the company, the acquisition date, and the projected cost. Just enough to sniff out the leak.

Now, we waited to see which version made it to the press.

Waiting felt worse than the scandal.

Waiting meant pretending. Smiling in the office. Nodding through meetings. Drinking coffee with hands that wanted to shake. And Liam—he wore the same mask he always did. Calm. Commanding. Untouchable.

But I could see the storm in his eyes every time he looked at me.

“You think this will work?” I asked quietly during a boardroom break.

“If it doesn’t,” he murmured, “then we burn the place down and start over.”

“Dramatic.”

He smirked. “You like me dramatic.”

“You’re not wrong.”

We returned to the meeting. I tried to keep my mind on projec

AVA’S POVBetrayal tastes different when it comes from someone you love. It’s quieter. Deadlier. It doesn’t scream or bleed—it just settles in your bones, cold and final.I didn’t cry when I left Liam’s penthouse. I didn’t scream when security walked me out of my own office. But I cracked when I got home, sat on the floor, and stared at my phone for an hour, willing it to ring.It didn’t.He didn’t.And the longer the silence stretched, the more I realized… he really didn’t believe me.Not completely. Not where it mattered most.Jenna showed up at my door the next morning, still in sweats and no makeup, carrying two coffees and an expression that meant sit down before I drag you.“You’re on the internet again,” she said, tossing her phone on the couch.“Great,” I muttered. “New Footage Reveals Ava Davis Near Internal Archive Server—Is She the Mastermind?”“Do they ever get tired?” I asked.“Nope. But I did notice something. Here.” Jenna scrubbed through the video frame-by-frame. “Thi

AVA’S POVThree weeks. That’s how long it had been since Martin Ellison walked out of Liam’s boardroom for the last time.Three weeks since the Carter name clawed its way back into the headlines—not for scandal, but for reform. Transparency. Transformation. They called it the “Carter Correction.” Stocks stabilized. Media softened. Even investors who once doubted Liam were cautiously returning. And I?I had my own office. It's an actual corner one. With windows a skyline and a nameplate on the glass that read:Ava Davis – Director of Strategic PartnershipsYeah. That part made me cry. In the bathroom. Twice.Liam claimed he promoted me because I was “brilliant, decisive, and a terrifying negotiator when sleep-deprived,” but I knew the truth: he trusted me. Not just with his company. With his life. And slowly, very slowly, I was learning to trust myself, too.•••“Your corner office is bigger than mine,” Jenna teased as she walked in one Monday morning with her usual triple-shot espress

AVA’S POV I thought winning would feel like fireworks. Instead, it felt like fog. Not the cold, menacing kind—but the thick, cloying kind that leaves you drifting, unsure of where the next step leads. The scandal had cracked. Jessica was behind bars. Edward King’s empire was hemorrhaging from public exposure. Victoria Hayes had gone off the grid. And I was no longer a whisper in Liam Carter’s shadow—I was standing beside him. So why did it still feel like something was coming? Why did my gut keep whispering: this isn’t over yet? “Careful,” Liam said as I dropped a spoonful of sugar into his coffee. “That’s the third one.” “I like things sweet. It balances out your personality.” He arched a brow over his newspaper. “You think I’m bitter?” “You built an empire out of ice and sarcasm.” “You’re not wrong.” We were having breakfast on the balcony of one of Liam’s penthouses—because, apparently, the man collected real estate like I collected unpaid therapy bills. The city was a

AVA’S POVIf you’d told me a month ago that I’d be waking up in a silk-sheeted bed inside a billionaire’s fortress after publicly exposing his enemies and kissing him in front of live cameras, I would’ve laughed until I cried. But here I was.Not crying. Not laughing.Just… trying to figure out what the hell came next.I rolled over in bed, the early morning sunlight kissing the edges of the tall windows, and sighed. The events of the last twenty-four hours were still playing in my head like a broken movie reel. The press conference. The crowd. The words someone I care about still echo in Liam’s voice. And then the kiss.God, the kiss.My cheeks flushed just remembering it.As if summoned by thought alone, there was a knock at the door.“Come in,” I said, pulling the covers higher even though I was already dressed in a robe.Liam entered, looking fresh out of some early-morning business meeting, sleeves rolled up, tie slightly loosened, coffee in hand. Like a Calvin Klein ad with veng

Third-person POV The sun just began to peek through the curtains of his tiny flat, and Liam woke up early. Ava was still asleep on the sofa, so he carefully slipped out of bed without waking her. They were in a difficult predicament. He kept thinking about the kiss they had shared the previous evening, but he decided to ignore it. He felt a great sense of regret for the error. He had brought her into his life to control what she heard and saw, to keep her near. Ava was dangerous because she was too inquisitive. Liam made sure the door didn't squeak as he silently left the flat after getting dressed. As he stepped outside into the refreshing morning air, he felt relieved. He was not yet ready to confront Ava. He felt sick to his stomach at the idea of discussing it last night. He needed to solidify his ideas, and he didn't want to become involved in any emotional situations. Liam sat down at his desk at the workplace, which was overflowing with files that needed his attention. How
