Time freezes as Alex holds the letter opener to his own throat. The boardroom fills with a silence so complete I can hear my own pulse hammering in my ears. Geneva's face, usually a masterpiece of control, cracks with something I never thought I'd see—genuine fear for her son.

"You wouldn't," she whispers.

Alex's laugh is soft, dangerous. "Try me. After everything you've done? This seems poetic."

I catch Carlos Rodriguez's eye across the room. The man who orchestrated his own death to protect his company now watches his son risking actual death for the same cause. The pride and terror warring on his face mirror the storm in my chest.

"Twenty seconds," Alex says, pressing harder. A thin crimson line appears beneath the blade.

"Alex..." I step forward, but security holds me back.

Geneva's composure reappears like a mask snapping back into place. "Fine. You win this round." She slowly reaches into her pocket and withdraws a phone. One button press. "Disarmed. Check if you don't believe m

  • wounded Heart    Chapter 113: A Truth Too Costly

The Monaco shoreline glittered with deceptive tranquility as dawn broke over the Mediterranean. In a private medical facility overlooking the harbor, Sonia awoke with a start, her body aching as consciousness returned. The antiseptic smell and the soft beeping of nearby equipment oriented her immediately. Hospital. But how?Her last memories flashed in broken fragments—the submersible flooding, masked figures, Alex fighting desperately, his lips still burning on hers before darkness claimed her."Alex," she whispered, trying to sit up despite the protest of her ribs."Easy, Ms. Martinez," came a gentle voice with a French accent. A nurse appeared beside her bed, adjusting something in her IV. "You've been unconscious for nearly sixteen hours.""The man I was with—"The nurse's expression revealed nothing. "I'm afraid I cannot answer your questions. Someone will be with you shortly."Sonia's heart raced as the nurse departed, leaving her alone with the terrifying uncertainty. Was Alex

The submersible cut silently through dark Mediterranean waters, its navigation systems guiding them toward Monaco with unwavering precision. Inside the cramped cabin, Sonia watched Alex examine the USB drive they'd recovered, turning it over in his fingers as if it might reveal its secrets through touch alone."We need a computer," he said finally, tucking the drive into his pocket. "And not just any computer—one that's secure, isolated from any network."Sonia nodded, still processing the rapid sequence of events—finding her father, the revelation about James, the desperate escape. "The submersible might have one. Franco seems to have thought of everything else."She began examining the compact control panel, feeling Alex's presence behind her as he leaned in to observe. His proximity sent an involuntary shiver through her that had nothing to do with the chill of the underwater vessel."There," Alex said, his breath warm against her neck as he pointed to a small compartment beneath t

The hidden tunnel beneath Franco's villa plunged deeper into the mountain with each step. Alex's phone provided the only illumination, casting long shadows that danced across the rough-hewn walls. Sonia clutched the metal case to her chest, her father's final warning echoing in her mind."There should be emergency lighting," Alex murmured, his free hand against the wall for guidance. "These types of escape routes always have—"As if responding to his words, a series of dim red lights flickered to life along the floor, revealing a narrow passage that stretched into darkness ahead."How far down does this go?" Sonia wondered aloud, trying to ignore the distant sounds of conflict above them."The cliff face is at least two hundred meters above sea level," Alex replied, his voice steady despite the circumstances. "We need to reach the cove Franco mentioned."The thought of her father—and mother—facing James's forces sent a fresh wave of anxiety through Sonia. After years of believing Elia

Dawn broke over the Mediterranean as Alex’s private jet descended toward Palma de Mallorca. Sonia gazed at the rugged coastline, her mind racing. Somewhere on this island was a man she had mourned for years—a father who had chosen to vanish rather than stay in her life.“We’ll land at a private airstrip,” Alex said. “Elena has secured transportation to the coordinates from the file.”Sonia nodded, noting the tension in his shoulders. “Your mother doesn’t know we’re here.”“No. And neither does James.” His jaw tightened. “I’m not sure where my brother’s loyalties lie anymore.”The pilot announced final approach. After two decades, believing Franco Martinez had died in a car crash, she was minutes from confronting him.“What will you say to him?” Alex asked, taking her hand.“I’ve rehearsed a thousand conversations. None feel adequate.”The jet touched down, rolling toward a discreet hangar where a sleek Range Rover waited. As they descended, Sonia saw Alex scanning their surroundings.

The Monaco sunset bathed the study in amber light as Sonia stared at the laptop screen, her fingers still intertwined with Alex's. The blinking notification caught her eye—a hidden file decrypting itself without their command."Alex," she whispered, nodding toward the screen. He leaned forward, his warmth pressed against her shoulder. "The Monaco Protocol," he read aloud. "My father never mentioned this."The file opened automatically, revealing a video recording. Carlos Rodriguez's face appeared, older than in the company portraits but with the same penetrating gaze that his son had inherited."If you're watching this," Carlos began, his voice steady despite evident illness, "then you and Sonia have discovered the truth about Project Sanctuary. About your connection."Alex's hand tightened around hers."The shadow board believes they control the Rodriguez legacy through financial leverage and carefully cultivated alliances," Carlos continued. "What they don't know is that Geneva and

Monaco gleamed against the Mediterranean, untouched by the darkness that had nearly claimed them days before. From the Rodriguez villa terrace, Sonia watched the yachts below while contemplating the revelation that she might have been engineered for her position."You're overthinking again," Alex said, approaching with a pronounced limp despite abandoning his crutches for their meeting with James."Force of habit," she replied. He looked different here—more corporate heir than the man who had confessed his feelings in darkness. His suit concealed his bandaged torso, just as her blouse hid the bruises marking her shoulders."We could still walk away," Alex suggested. "Forget James, forget the files, forget all of it.""No," she said finally. "We couldn't."Alex's hand found hers, his thumb tracing circles against her skin. "I know.""Elena is securing the perimeter," she said, forcing her thoughts to the mission. "James requested a meeting with just us, but—""But you don't trust him,"
