The gunshot shattered the night.
“Sofia!”
I watched the little girl crumple, and for one horrifying second, I couldn't move.
Then I saw Rafael's guard stagger backwards, clutching his shoulder. Sofia had dropped to the ground before the bullet struck him.
She had survived.
“GET DOWN!” I screamed.
Dante pulled Lia behind a concrete barrier just as bullets tore through the loading area.
I threw myself behind a stack of wooden crates, my wounded arm screaming in protest. Blood soaked my sleeve, but I barely noticed.
Sofia was still exposed.
I raised my pistol and fired at the men advancing towards her. One dropped behind a container. Another ducked for cover.
“SOFIA, CRAWL TO ME!”
She moved on her hands and knees, sobbing as bullets struck the ground around her.
“That's it, sweetheart! Keep coming!”
A man rushed towards her.
I fired, forcing him to dive behind a pillar. Sofia scrambled the remaining distance, and I dragged her behind the crates.
She threw her arms around my waist.
“I thought he was going to kill me!”
I held her tightly.
“I won't let anyone hurt you.”
But I knew promises meant nothing if I couldn't get us out alive.
Across the loading area, Dante was firing with one hand while keeping Lia behind him. His face had turned frighteningly pale, and his movements were becoming slower.
He was losing blood.
Too much blood.
I needed to end this before his body gave up.
I checked my magazine.
Three rounds remained.
I looked towards the warehouse entrance. Rafael was retreating behind his men, heading for the vehicle waiting near the river.
He was running.
After everything he had done, he intended to escape.
I handed Sofia my spare pistol.
Her eyes widened.
“I'm not asking you to shoot anyone,” I told her quickly. “Keep it beside you. Stay behind that barrier, and don't move until Dante comes for you.”
She nodded, trembling.
I kissed her forehead.
“Be brave for me.”
Then I rose and ran towards Rafael.

DANTE'S POV
I saw Mara leave cover.
My heart nearly stopped.
“MARA! GET BACK!”
She didn't listen.
Of course she didn't.
The woman had a remarkable talent for ignoring orders, especially mine.
I tried to follow, but a wave of dizziness forced me against the barrier. My shirt was soaked with blood, and every breath felt like broken glass moving through my chest.
Lia clutched my arm.
“Daddy, you're bleeding.”
I looked down at her.
“It's nothing, princess.”
It was a lie.
I could feel my strength draining away.
But I couldn't collapse. Not while my daughters were still in danger.
I looked towards the warehouse.
Mara was moving between containers, using the shadows to approach Rafael. Two of his men spotted her and opened fire.
She dropped, rolled behind a metal drum, and returned fire.
One man fell.
The other disappeared behind a truck.
Mara kept moving.
I had seen trained soldiers in combat. I had watched men twice her size freeze under pressure.
Mara moved as if the chaos around her were something she understood better than anyone else.
She wasn't fearless.
She was simply unwilling to let fear make her decisions.
And watching her fight for my family, I realised something that terrified me more than the bullet in my chest.
I couldn't lose her.
Not after discovering what she meant to me.
I raised my pistol again.
A man emerged from the darkness, aiming directly at Mara's back.
I fired.
He fell before he could pull the trigger.
Mara glanced over her shoulder.
Our eyes met across the distance.
I gave her a single nod.
Go.
She turned and disappeared into the smoke.

MARA'S POV
Rafael reached his vehicle just as I came around the final container.
“Rafael!”
He turned, surprise flashing across his face before his familiar smile returned.
“You really are difficult to kill.”
“Get used to disappointment.”
I raised my pistol.
He raised his.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
The harbour lights flickered above us, reflecting off the black water. Somewhere behind me, gunfire continued, but the sounds seemed distant.
“Look at you,” Rafael said. “Bleeding, exhausted, and still chasing me.”
“You took two innocent children. You shot their father. What did you expect?”
“I expected Dante to surrender.”
“He did.”
Rafael's smile widened.
“And yet here you are, still fighting for him.”
I tightened my grip.
“You don't understand loyalty.”
“Loyalty?” He laughed. “Dante married you because your family owed him money. You're nothing more than a convenient arrangement.”
The words should have hurt.
Perhaps they would have, months ago.
But I had seen the way Dante held his daughters. I had heard the fear in his voice when he thought he might lose me.
Whatever our marriage had been at the beginning, it was no longer just an arrangement.
“That may be what you believe,” I said. “But it doesn't change what I'm going to do to you.”
His expression hardened.
“You think you can defeat me tonight?”
“No.”
I stepped forward.
“I think I can stop you from hurting them again.”
He fired.
I threw myself sideways. The bullet struck the metal vehicle behind me.
I returned fire, hitting his shoulder.
Rafael staggered with a curse, his pistol slipping from his hand.
I rushed forward and drove him against the side of the vehicle. He struck me across the face, reopening the cut inside my mouth.
I answered with a blow to his injured shoulder.
He cried out.
I twisted his arm behind his back and forced him against the vehicle.
“It's over.”
He laughed through his pain.
“You really believe that?”
I pressed my weapon against the back of his neck.
“Try me.”
His gaze shifted towards the warehouse.
For the first time, I saw something other than arrogance in his eyes.
Anticipation.
Then I heard an engine roar.
A second black SUV burst through the harbour gates.
My stomach tightened.
The vehicle sped towards the loading area, its headlights sweeping across the chaos.
Rafael began laughing.
I shoved him down and turned towards the approaching SUV.
The rear window lowered.
A gun barrel emerged.
I threw myself behind the vehicle as gunfire erupted.
Metal sparked around me.
“DANTE!” I screamed into my transmitter. “We've got another vehicle coming in! Get the girls into cover!”
Static answered.
Then Dante's voice came through, strained and breathless.
“Mara, listen to me. Get out of there. Now!”
I glanced towards Rafael.
He was crawling towards his fallen pistol.
I fired into the ground beside his hand.
“Don't move!”
He froze, still smiling.
The SUV screeched to a halt.
Three armed men climbed out.
One pointed his weapon directly at me.
“Drop your gun!”
I didn't move.
He fired.
I rolled behind the vehicle as bullets shattered the windows. Glass rained over my shoulders.
I was outnumbered, wounded, and nearly out of ammunition.
But I wasn't leaving Rafael alive to threaten the children again.
I reached for my final magazine.
Then a deafening explosion rocked the harbour.
The ground shook beneath me.
I looked towards the warehouse.
Flames burst through one of the side windows.
“No!”
Dante and the girls were still inside.
I scrambled to my feet and ran towards the burning building.
Behind me, Rafael shouted something, but I ignored him.
Smoke swallowed the entrance. The heat struck my face as I stumbled through the doorway, calling their names.
“DANTE!”
No answer.
“Sofia! LIA!”
A beam crashed to the floor ahead of me.
I covered my face and pushed through the smoke.
Then I saw a figure lying beside the concrete barrier.
My heart stopped.
Dante.
I dropped beside him and pressed my fingers against his neck.
A pulse.
Weak, but there.
“Dante, wake up!”
His eyelids fluttered.
“Mara…”
“Where are the girls?”
He struggled to lift his hand and pointed towards the far end of the warehouse.
I turned.
Two small figures stood near the emergency exit, coughing in the smoke.
Sofia was supporting Lia.
I rushed towards them, gathered both girls, and led them outside.
By the time we reached the loading area, the fire had spread across the warehouse roof.
My men finally arrived, pouring through the gates with weapons raised. Two carried a medical kit and rushed towards Dante.
I turned to look for Rafael.
The vehicle was gone.
So was he.
Only a dark smear of blood remained on the ground where I had forced him against the car.
I stood in the cold harbour air, holding the girls against me as the warehouse burned behind us.
We had survived.
But Rafael had escaped again.
And I knew he wouldn't forgive me for what I had done to him.

DANTE'S POV
I woke to the sound of a heart monitor.
White lights glared above me. My chest was wrapped tightly, and every breath reminded me that I was still alive by a narrow margin.
Mara sat beside my bed, her injured arm bandaged. She looked exhausted, but when she saw my eyes open, she leaned forward.
“Welcome back, husband.”
I tried to smile.
“How are the girls?”
“Asleep. Both safe.”
Relief washed through me.
“And you?”
“Still alive. Unfortunately for your enemies.”
A weak laugh escaped me, followed by a sharp wince.
She immediately pressed a hand against my shoulder.
“Don't move.”
I caught her fingers before she could pull away.
For a long moment, I simply held her hand.
“Thank you,” I whispered.
Her expression softened.
“You don't have to thank me for protecting my family.”
My family.
The words settled somewhere deep inside me.
I pulled her hand closer.
“Mara, when this is over, I want us to talk about our marriage.”
She studied me carefully.
“About the marriage we were forced into?”
“About what I want it to become.”
Her lips parted slightly, but before she could answer, the hospital room door opened.
My security chief entered, carrying a tablet.
“Boss, I'm sorry to interrupt.”
His expression told me this wasn't ordinary business.
“What happened?”
“We recovered footage from the harbour. There's something you need to see.”
He placed the tablet on the bed.
The screen showed the black SUV arriving at the harbour. One of the men stepped out and spoke briefly to Rafael before the explosion.
The footage zoomed in.
I stopped breathing.
Mara leaned closer.
“Who is that?”
I couldn't answer.
I knew the man.
I had trusted him with my life. He had served my family for years, stood beside me through wars, and helped build the empire Rafael was trying to destroy.
But the footage showed him handing Rafael a phone.
Then the man turned towards the camera.
His face was unmistakable.
My security chief lowered his voice.
“Boss, there's more. We found a message on the phone recovered from the SUV.”
He hesitated.
“It's addressed to Rafael.”
I stared at him.
“Read it.”
He swallowed.
“The General is becoming a problem. If she survives the next attack, eliminate her before Dante discovers who really ordered the kidnapping.”
Silence filled the room.
Mara slowly released my hand.
“Who ordered it, Dante?”
I looked at the frozen image on the screen.
The man in the photograph was not Rafael.
It was someone inside my own inner circle.
And beneath the message was a name I never expected to see.
Vivienne Blackwood.
End of Chapter 12.
