Chapter 50: Escape from the Temple City
Casser led Wen, Eldion and the animated statues out of the courtyard and thought of what possible route that would give the least risk of encountering an imperial soldier. He passed by Noha who was still tied to a tree and thought if he should bring Noha with them as they escape the ancient city. Noha looked at Casser and brayed as if to ask where he was going. She flicked her ears and lifted her foot off the ground, like she wanted to come with Casser. Casser wanted to take Noha with them and remembered the many times that the carabao had been loyal and helpful to him. He realized too that Noha would only slow them down as they escape, and they could never outrun the imperial soldiers through the jungle the same way that they outrun them in the wetlands. Casser gave Noha's head a gentle tap and with a quick swing of his knife, severed the rope that tied her to the tree."Verna and Shaan are your masters now, Noha. Serve them well," Casser said and he walked on,

Chapter 51: The Attack on the Temple City
Inside the temple city, Verna swept an imperial soldier to the ground with her tail. She hissed, revealing her fanged teeth and extended her arms to her sides with her hands clenched into fists. The moon shone on her body, making her iridescent scales glisten and her eyes brighten like silver stars. She pushed herself to full height, towering over the soldiers that swarmed towards her. With a strong sweep of her giant tail, she threw two imperial soldiers to the wall of the galleries as another one hit a nearby tree. Three more soldiers came with their swords drawn and tried to slash Verna using their sharp weapons, but Verna saw them coming and with a push from her tail, she was able to jump to the roof of the galleries. The soldiers hesitated for a few moments and then started climbing the walls to reach Verna. They were strong and agile and were able to scale the walls to quickly reach the roof. As they lifted their head above the roof, they saw that Verna had been waiting. She his

Chapter 52: The Day After
It was early morning and the sun had spread its golden light across the vast ruins surrounding the ancient temple city deep within the jungles of Alanca. Kora was the first to wake up and started to cluck noisily as she watched her surroundings slowly getting brighter. She rose from where she lay against a moss-covered wall and flapped her wings before finding a wet spot on the ground. There, she started to scratch and peck at the soil for worms and snails.Lankko woke up when he heard Kora clucking and noticed the brightness in his bedroom. He opened his eyes and saw the tall trees towering over the moss-covered walls of the shelter where they took refuge the previous night. He blinked several times to make sure that he was not dreaming, wishing that he was still inside his bedroom at the fortress. When his surroundings did not change, he was saddened with the memory of his family staying behind in Alnoc. Still, he had to accept the fact that it would probably be a long time before he

Chapter 53: Trekking Through the Jungle
The two men were silent after breakfast as they thought about what had happened and what they would do next. Enzir knew that his plan had failed. He had wanted to bring the jade statue back to Alnoc and possibly bargain with Jal Dalik, but failed. He also wanted to retrieve the pearl from the thief who took it, but again failed as they were not able to track the dancer. Now, they had also lost the means to track her since Enzir had drunk all the remaining magic elixir to subdue the snake creature. Enzir was once again at a loss on what they would do next. The worst part was that he was defeated by a living statue, and he was made to kneel before someone of lower status."What do we do now, Jad Enzir?" asked Lankko, much to Enzir's annoyance."I don't know!" replied Enzir in a loud voice. "We lost our chance to return to Alnoc when we lost that jade statue and that dancer who took the pearl. Now, it looks like we'll have to live in this jungle while relying on fruits an

Chapter 54: The Jungle Outlaws
Ten more men jumped out of the trapdoors that opened from the ground, sending dried leaves fluttering to the air. The trapdoors were concealed under the plentiful dried leaves that covered the jungle floor and remained undetected by Enzir and Lankko until it was too late. The men from the trapdoors had drawn their weapons and surrounded Enzir and Lankko. It all happened so quickly that even before the dried leaves that flew to the air landed on the ground, the men were already in position and pointing spears and arrows towards the two men from Alnoc.Enzir was taken by surprise at the sudden appearance of the armed men before them. His mind raced on who the men were and where they came from, but his instinct was to defend himself against possible assailants. He placed a hand on the hilt of his sword and was about to draw it out, when one of the armed men stepped forward and stopped him with a threatening voice."Pull out the sword and you lose the arm," said the man threateningly at En

Chapter 55: At the Secret Camp
They walked for more than an hour and Enzir felt disoriented after being pushed towards unknown directions and tumbling several times to the ground. There were times when he was pushed forward to climb upward slopes or made to wade through shallow water. When he slowed his steps to avoid slipping, he was given a shove on the back by one of the outlaws. They made too many numerous turns and it did not take long before Enzir lost his own bearings. He knew that he would not be able to find his way back should he ever get the chance to escape. Even Lankko could not have remembered their way after the many turns that they were forced to make. Enzir guessed that the outlaws intentionally sent them through a circuitous route and probably even doubled back a few times until it was impossible to remember the way. The outlaws remained silent all through out and there was no way of recognizing who they were with. The outlaw chief may have even left them at the hands of his men as he went directly

Chapter 56: Enzir Intervenes
As with the cavern they had just come from, there were lamps placed on small recesses on the walls that dimly lit the space that they were in. The cavern had been dug out recently with the pick marks still visible on the ceiling and walls as well as on the floor. Enzir reasoned that the floor at least could have been made smoother by people stepping on it had the cavern been in use for a longer time.On the walls hung a few iron tools and implements that could be found at the Alnoc dungeons along with iron chains and a cage that Enzir did not recall being used, at least during his short time as governor. There were additional recesses that were turned into shelves that also contained different tools and implements. At the center of the cavern, dimly lit by the lamps from the far walls was an apparatus that was only too familiar to Enzir and Lankko. Its form was made a bit more rudimentary and the shape of the wood simpler, but Enzir could recognize the Karbo, the new a

Chapter 57: Captured
Mira gently unsheathed her knife and held its blade between her fingers. She felt the smoothness of the cold metal as she raised it a few inches above her shoulder while her eyes remained focused on a small spot several steps away. She drew in her breath and saw the brown and gray bark of the ancient tree. Its surface had spots of lichen and moss and the earth-colored patterns all seemed natural, but right in the middle of it, Mira could see the faint outline of a lizard. It blinked its eyes and a thin pink tongue slipped out of its mouth, but its body remained still in perfect camouflage with the back of the tree.As Mira prepared to throw the knife, she sensed something else in her peripheral vision. A slight movement, something that was not really part of the environment but trying to blend in. It was more conspicuous than the lizard that she had detected on the tree trunk, but Mira knew that it would remain hidden to the untrained eye. Mira’s eyes rolled to the left and she tried t

Chapter 58: Getting to the Camp
Mira was pushed forward and the men surrounding Eldion and Casser gave way for her. She was forced to sit between her companions with her hands tied behind her.“Didn’t you hear me shout a warning?” asked Mira as she folded her legs beneath her. “I shouted at the first sign that I saw.”“I did!” said Eldion. “I was there by the fire when I heard you, but there were already three men who blocked my escape. I remembered how you fought the troupe and tackled one of them to the ground. He fell instantly, incapacitated.” Eldion said proudly. He narrated what happened with his excitement still discernible.“How did you get captured then?” asked Casser as he looked across Mira at Eldion.Eldion turned to Casser and replied. “I was already at the bushes there when somehow my legs got tangled in ropes.”“Is it a cord with two balls at the end acting as weights? It’s a

Chapter 59: Tea with Remuel
Eldion and Mira squinted at the man who just spoke to them. The man was standing in front of the light and they found it hard to discern his features. Eldion thought that it was weird being welcomed into a secret camp that might as well be prison camp, after feeling the ropes around her wrist cutting deeper into his skin.Casser moved his head to one side to be able to look at the man properly. He thought he recognized the voice but wanted to see the man’s face to be sure.“Remuel?” Casser asked, trying to see the man’s face in the dim light. The man moved closer and Casser asked again, “Remuel, is that you?”“Casser! I didn’t realize that it was you.” Remuel then signaled to his men. “Cut off their bonds.” The outlaws immediately cut off the ropes that bound the prisoners’ hands. Eldion was instantly relieved and massaged his wrists to get his blood to circulate.“I recognized
