Sister Talk
I heard my sister talking to a friend on the phone when I made my way past her room. I didn’t stop to talk to her at the moment. I could also hear Max and Mom in their room talking. Even though they were trying to keep their voices low, it was clear Mom was upset, and Max wasn’t getting very far in trying to console her. I went into my room, trying to for

Trouble Follows
It was much easier to concentrate on my magic while I was sitting alone in the forest, but Grayson had insisted on following me into the woods the next day, so I was sitting on a stump near my tree, my eyes closed, thinking about the flowers I’d grown and all of the energy that had gone into them. That energy was mine to draw upon anytime I needed it. What I’d given to the forest, she would give back to me.

Interference
Sam was out in the yard when we got there, but he wasn’t chopping wood. Thankfully, he had his shirt on. I’m not sure what he was doing--maybe waiting for us. I noticed he had his truck keys in his hand, though, and that made me nervous.“Hello, Samuel,” my sister said, sashaying her way over to him, her hands folded behind her back.

Trickery
We pulled up next to the diner, and I pushed the door open before Horace even had brought the truck to a complete stop, ready to get out of the cramped, smelly place with the old man I didn’t care for.I stumbled out of the vehicle, headed for the door, Raven behind me. Gray got out pretty quickly, too, but she paused by the truck, closed the door, and took a few dee

Chase
I stood there, watching Raven chase after the truck with my sister in it for a few moments, contemplating what to do. Ben had said he’d be right here, but I didn’t know if there was something I could do in the meantime, like throw a fireball at the back of the truck and take the tire out. That seemed kind of risky at this distance, especially since Raven was between me and them, and the truck was almost out of sight, so I didn’t do it.

Taken
I let Sam get out of the vehicle first. It might seem like I was more powerful than him and shouldn’t have gotten out first, but he was so big and strong, I thought it might intimidate them.It didn’t.

Out of Control
There was no way I was letting these jerks get away with this. I needed to make sure Ben didn’t get hurt before I did anything else. I imagined that piece of metal flying at him taking an alternate route, up into the air and over the side of the road, into a field. The Parkers stopped laughing.

Help is on the Way
“What’s his name?” I asked Ben as I turned on my healing powers in an attempt to help the poor guy stretched across the ditch with half of his face missing. “Mike Davis,” Ben said, just after he told Grayson the number of the country road we were on. “He’s one of the Parkers’ friends.”

Interrogated
A blur of lights and sirens surrounded us as the sheriff and his deputies blocked off the road on both ends. Sam moved his truck out of the way so that they could get to the accident scene, and some of the deputies who were trained in emergency medical procedures attended to the two hurt men.I wasn’t sure what I could say to them. Did they have any idea that I was a

Family
Even though my pack was across the road from me, still talking to the sheriff deputies, the moment Horace Ford arrived, I could feel all three of them tense up. I did, too. My stomach muscles tightening so strongly, I thought I might vomit all over Deputy Schmidt’s boots. “Great, the old man’s here,” he muttered. I probably wasn’t suppos
