Chased
From the back seat, it seemed as if something was bothering Rome, and Ella could only assume that it was the fact that he thought someone was following them. She couldn’t see the mirrors as well as he could and didn’t want to turn around and stare out the back of the car the way that he was, but she was nervous. What would happen if they got out of the car at the train station and Rome’s father’s men were there waiting for them? She could see herself throwing elbows and screaming, doing her best to get away from them, her red wig coming off. Pe

Crazy Adventure
When Gus came back onto the freeway, headed out of town, there was no sign of the car that had been following them. Rome kept his eyes glued to the mirror anyway in case they reappeared. He didn’t think his dad would think of sending people to Grenoble. It wasn’t a station that would’ve been on his dad’s radar, especially not if he thought there was a chance his father thought Bart had been Rome going to the airport.Thinking of Bart made him want to call his friend and see if he’d gotten through security yet, but he didn’t want the

Don't Stop the Train!
The train station wasn’t too crowded, which should’ve made Ella feel more comfortable because it meant it would be easier to see any of Verona’s thugs coming after them. It would also mean that there were less places to hide, though. It would be harder for them to try to blend into a crowd.“What about the car?” Mary asked as they got their luggage out of the back. “Whose car is it?”

Closing In
After what seemed like forever, the train began to speed up and shot out of the station, leaving the two men in suits behind. Ella finally sucked in air, leaning back in her seat and trying to get her heart to stop beating out of her chest.“We lost them for now,” Rome said, taking her hand in his. “But this isn’t over yet.”&l

Rearrange Your Face
They were approaching the first stop, and Rome was out of his seat pacing. He knew the attendants would tell him he had to sit down soon, and he would when they asked, but he was nervous. Not only did he have to take care of his wife and make sure nothing happened to her, he had two other innocent people with him as well.Ella had filled Gus in on how she had faked her death, though he noted she’d left out some of the details, like how they’d gotten the coroner and the police involved. Gus had thought it was hilarious and clapped his hand on his leg in gle

Ruse
Ella willed herself not to look in the direction of the men in the suits headed her way, but it was all she could do to keep from lifting her eyes and look at them. She kept her focus on Gus, who was telling them a story from when he was in elementary school. While his French was perfect, he had a bit of an Italian accent. She hoped the men wouldn’t be listening too closely as they came by or that she could take over the majority of the conversation by then. But… would they be looking for her and expecting Ella Sinders to be speaking French? Surely, they didn’t know she was alive, did they?

Change of Plans
Ella waited to hear what Gus’s plan might be. She had a feeling he had something up his sleeve, which shouldn’t have been a surprise considering how useful he’d been already.“Why not Domazlice?” he asked with a shrug. “I have a friend from my childhood who lives there who might be able to help us. It’s a much less likely place for them to be looking than a bigger city like Budapest.”

Meeting King
It was dark by the time they got off of the train in Domazlice. So far, they hadn’t seen any of Rome’s father’s men again after the incident on the train earlier in the day, but Ella wasn’t about to let her guard down now, even though it seemed very unlikely that they would’ve followed the party here without picking them up at all of the other stops they’d made that day.“King is here, waiting for us in the parking lot,” Gus said, looking at his phone.

Safe House
Rome had never ridden in the back of a truck before, but it was actually kind of fun, even when King went over big bumps that made him think he might go flying out at any moment. Gus was also having a good time, though he was keeping his enthusiasm reined in so as to keep eyes off of them, Rome supposed. It took over an hour to get to King’s property, and even then, they had to wind their way through a thick woods to get to his house. Rome and Gus laid down flat in the back of the truck to keep the tree branches from reaching out and clawing at their eyes. Betwe

Stewing
The aftertaste of King’s stew lingered in Ella’s mouth long after she’d finished shoveling down a few bites, which had been hours ago. She lay in the dark on a small, twin bed, listening to Rome’s heartbeat and trying to be thankful that they were together, despite the fact that she was hungry and uncomfortable.“It could be worse,” he whispered, brushing her cheek with his fingertips. “You could be Mary.”
