ETTORE

The moment Fia walked out of her house with the basket of food items, everything her mother said flew out of her other ear. This was it, the moment for her to tell the whole world that today was her birthday and get as many gifts as possible. Her sister and brother had done it and they were selfish not to give her anything so now, it was her turn. With a mischievous smile, she began to hop away from her house. When she reached a more busy street, she started singing.“It’s my birthday today…yay!” At first, no one heard her, so she started to bump into people ‘accidentally’. This got people’s attention, they would smile at her and pat her head. Some would laugh and call her silly girl, others would comment on how beautiful her dress was and how good she looked on it but no one gave her anything. She frowned but she didn’t stop hopping and singing till she got to Venitia’s home. She stared wide eyed at the mas

THE CENTURION

After walking for thirty minutes, Fia knew a few things about Ettore. He hated fish, he low-key wants to be a farmer, he was thirteen years old same age as her brother and the most fascinating, his father is a centurion. The last one scared Fia, the centurion and his legionaries were the ones who 'took care' of the Christians. Her mother had made it clear thousand of times that if she spots a Roman soldier, she should run the opposite direction. But here she was, holding hands with the son of the man who had the power to wipe her family from existence. "Fia are you listening?" The girl snapped out of her thoughts and smiled sheepishly at Ettore. He returned the smile, exposing his well arranged white teeth. "We are here". He said. "I just need to see someone and then I'll return to you". Fia looked at the large structure in front of her. This house was ten times better than that of Veticia's and hers couldn't even be measured with it. They had long si

FIA'S PRAYER

Hagne knew it.She knew she made a mistake. What was she thinking anyway? Why should she let a seven year old girl go out by herself?. It was those deceptive eyes of hers, she was sure of it.She had paced and paced and paced, waiting for her daughter to barge into the house with a smile on her face. But no, she had been waiting for over an hour and the small girl hadn’t shown up yet.Hagne had attempted to pour the aggression on her other children, but with their painfully inherited cunning abilities, they had disappeared into their rooms and locked themselves in. The audacity!! She was their mother for heaven’s sake! After another thirty minutes had passed, Hagne checked outside. The day was getting darker and still no sign of Fia. That was when she snapped. With a low growl, she wore a grey cloak over her dress and opened the door with force. Fortunately for her, there was no need for her to embarrass herself outside as Fia stood right at t

POTATOES, APPLES, TURNIPS AND A BIT OF THUNDER

Potatoes. Apples. Turnips. These words kept circling through Hagne's head, she let them to. The last thing she wanted to dwell on was her family's impending doom. She was being pessimistic, but she couldn't help it. No one who got caught by the centurion actually escaped.Potatoes. Apples. Turnips.Hagne couldn't sleep. Even after she had exhausted herself with tears, her eyes still wouldn't shut. She had been staring at the ceiling for more than twenty minutes as if a miracle would just suddenly appear. She couldn't find it in her to pray, her spirituality had long since disappeared. Even if she prayed, she felt like God will not answer her. She had been ignoring him for over a year now so why will he?Potatoes. Apples. Turnips. She wondered what her children were doing, especially Fia. She had frightened the little girl but she had no choice, she just hoped that the girl was sound asleep and not crying hysterically like she was.At that mo

TROUBLE IN THE HOUSE

“Round them up, put them in the cellar”. The soldiers moved immediately, pushing the group of prisoners into the wooden cellar. Renato watched them from a distance, his hands gripping the reins of his black horse tightly. His face was so stoic, one would think he was about to murder someone. The old man he had arrested earlier was the last to be thrown in. He was covered in blood from head to toe and his breathing was very shallow. Renato tried not to think of the moment of his arrest and also the look of horror on the little girl’s face who was with him. But as much as he tried to pretend, his facade broke immediately the old man looked him in the eye. Renato briefly thought of looking away but then chose not to because of his position. He was a centurion, why would he be scared of an old man? The man in question lifted his pale lips in a small smile before he was dragged into the cellar. As Renato stared as the soldiers closed the doors, the not so

FURY, CHILLY NIGHT AND A LITTLE BIT OF THUNDER

Renato sat on one of the soft chairs in the Consul’s chambers as two concubines each walked in with a tray of food and fruit on one hand and a wine jar on the other. As they set the items on the glass table, the purple transparent linen that they wore stuck to their bodies, showing off their naked skin. The Consul smiled in satisfaction before hitting one of them on her rear end. The lady giggled and ran out of the room with her companion.A sigh escaped Renato’s lips before his eyes took in the designs of the room to distract himself from the scene that took place s few second ago. A small laugh escaped Consul Cicero’s lips and he reached for the jar of wine before pouring its contents into two golden glasses.“I see you like it”. His deep voice boomed throughout the silent room. Renato nodded and smiled slightly.“It’s impressive”. He responded. Cicero laughed.“Of course it is, I make su

IN HOUSE STRANGER

Hagne stared at the sleeping figure on her mat while she slept. The woman that fell from the sky the night before had her white hair cover half of her face. She slept calmly like she was at peace. Hagne had never seen someone as unreal as she, she was like a literal angel. No, she was actually an angel. It was hard for Hagne to process what was going on. Why did the angel have to fall in front of her house? And why did it have to be at a time like this? She decided after a long while that she would leave the questions to the angel when she awoke.Hagne’s eyes darted to the horn that was once in the grasp of the angel, she gulped. She couldn’t help the fear that crept up in her. What kind of thing did she do that got her in trouble with a demon? Because only demons had horns that hideous. But still, the angel must be strong if she could pull that out of the head of a demon.Soft footsteps tore her mind away from her pointless thinking. H

BURIED SHAME AND GOLDEN IRISES

Hagne was slowly regretting her decision of coming here. The stares that the man across her gave was the cause of her regret. She and her husband were seated now, with drinks in front of them. Hagne ordered a cup of water, her husband ordered a beer. As usual. They had been staring at each other for a minute. As awkward as it was, Hagne refused to back down from her glares. She hated him, she had every right to. The fact that he looked even more healthier than her made her hate him more.He now wore expensive robes and clean sandals. She could tell he was fatter and his hair was neatly combed, not as disheveled as it used to be. He actually looked like one of the patricians. She hated it.How dare he be happy? After all the troubles he caused and after he left her to fix her issues on her own. After abandoning his family, for fame and wealth. She hoped he would choke on his beer, or die of liver failure. Any of the two worked for her. After a long

A PAIR OF GREEN EYES

To say Hagne was speechless was an understatement. She thought the angel couldn’t look any more divine while she slept, but now she was heavenly breathtaking. And her children agreed with her.Their eyes were wider than saucers and their mouths were open, there was no human being on earth that could look that good. Impossible. The angel in front of them shifted a little like she was uncomfortable, so Hagne drew herself out of her trance and stepped forward. The angel backed away.“Uh…hello”. Hagne awkwardly said. The angel didn’t reply. She eyed Hagne from head to toe before doing the same to her children then she returned her gaze to the woman, still not speaking a word.“My name is Hagne”. Hagne stated, she pointed at her children. “Those are my children, Fia, Ciro and Edvige”.Still no reply. It was Hagne’s turn to shift uncomfortably. Did the angel not like her? Was she that ba

COLLATERAL DAMAGE

“I’m going to kill her! But I need to find her first”. Abaddon crawled on the rough stairs with a loud groan. His body was injured and one part of his horn was missing, he looked more horrible than he already was.“I am going to kill her!”. He repeated, as if that would alleviate his suffering. Abaddon knew his suffering had just begun and it probably won’t end anytime soon. He knew he was extremely stupid crawling back here like he had not failed an important mission, he had a lot of guts. A lot of guts to die.“I’m…going to kill her…” He said again, his voice extremely low this time. He had arrived at his own judgement place and he probably would not be scared.A black, high throne was at the centre of the huge pillar that his master once stood on, with demons surrounding it. The more he came closer, the more they snarled like they could read he was now a failure. The throne, luckily for
