Chapter 31 Independence Day
Independence Day, 9 PM “Alright, thank you, bro. Be extra careful.” Jack hangs up the phone. “They are at the last stage of airplane delivery,” Jack says, shifting from one foot to another. He looks a bit nervous for a veteran and an ex-mafia member who has seen blood and death first-hand. What will happen tonight is nothing compared to what he had experienced before. “Good,” Chris nods, his eyes still fixating on the book he is reading. Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. His favorite. “Have we notified our FBI friends?” Jason asks. “Already did. They should be there as we speak.” None of them say a word for a brief while for Jack’s words to sink in. The news will break out in the next hour, shocking enough to shake the world and rock the Pinnacle empire. A trap they meticulously set five years ago finally captures its prey. But Chris knows better that he won’t get what he wants easily with just one try. Sure, the old man will spare no efforts to save his most beloved son from the a

Chapter 32 Arrest
The first thing Mia notices when she arrives at the Powell mansion is silence. If a pin drops, she is definitely going to hear the sound. It is like everyone in the huge mansion is holding his or her breath to wait for the lion to roar or the thunder to blast. The maids who usually busy themselves with dusting, brushing, or cleaning in the living room, corridor or garden are nowhere to be seen tonight. Maybe it is because it is late. 11 pm already. The job pays well but it also comes with frequent overtime. But it is still way better than unemployment and returning to the bleak job market. Mia sighs internally. “Miss Johnson, you are wanted in the study. They are all waiting for the young Mr. Powell now.” Mia nods her head and thanks the maid who reminds her kindly. The large study room looks smaller with a crowd in it. In addition to the Powell family that is short of Anthony, the company’s Vice Presidents Teri Lee, Hanser Limbaugh, and PR Manager Steven Hatcher are also here. Mr.

Chapter 33 Confession
They stare at each other for a moment that feels like as long as ages until Chris breaks the trance and moves his long legs in strides towards her. His smell, the familiar scent of freshly cut grass, fills Mia’s nostrils when he stands just two steps away from her. It is until then Mia realizes how badly she had missed him, his smell, his blue eyes, his body, his everything. “I miss you terribly,” Chris whispers, his eyes settled on her firmly. Mia almost chokes at his words. Isn’t it the same for her? But is she ready to have him back? To swallow her pride and dignity and continue to live in the shadow as his “friend”? No, she cannot do that anymore. Shaking her head, she says, “you shouldn’t.” The hurt in his eyes was visible. Mia knows that for a man with looks and wealth, he is not used to women saying no to him. She continues before her determination gives way to her longing for him, “It’s time for us to go separate ways. You just need another woman to get over me.” “No, I’

Chapter 34 Loved and Accepted
Chris: Where are you? You should have let me arrange a car to pick you up. Mia smiles at the notification showing on her cellphone. She is on the metro heading from Manhattan to their secret love nest in Brooklyn. She quickly texts back. You should have let me know who I am going to meet tonight. Chris: You have already met most of them. Nervous? They already love you. Mia shakes her head with a smile spreading on her face. How can you be so sure?Chris: Because they will love whom I love. Mia could imagine the cocky smile he is having right now. Aren’t you smug? She teases. Chris: Just stating the obvious. I’m a man of taste. You are so adorable you will win their hearts without making an effort. Mia couldn’t help grinning like a goofy high school student. You said you are not a man of sweet words. You didn’t give yourself enough credit. The subway announces the station she should get off at. Mia stands up and quickly texts back, I’m getting off the subway. See you in ten mi

Chapter 35 Heart to Heart
“What are you thinking?” Chris whispers while kissing Mia’s earlobe. They are lying in the darkness snuggling against each other, legs entwined, hands laced. “Nothing. Just a little tired.” Mia turns her face to him, smiling. “Something is bothering you. I can tell that. Is everything okay?” Chris asks with concern visible in his voice. “Yeah. It is too okay that makes everything so unreal.” Mia turns her body to face him. “What do you mean ‘too okay’?” Chris muses. “I was afraid they wouldn't like me before I met them,” Mia stops, followed by the booming laughter from Chris. “You are the most adorable, beautiful woman on earth. Of course, they will love you! And they always love whom I love.” A smug smile appears on his face. Mia rolls her eyes. “Including your ex-girlfriends?” Mia raises her eyebrows and waits to see his reaction. “I never brought anyone to them. You are the only girlfriend they meet.” Chris flashed her a knee-weakening smile, making Mia feel the butterflies

Chapter 36 Showdown
“Come down in five minutes. We will pay a visit to an old friend.” Mr. Garcia ends the call abruptly, giving Mia no opportunity to ask for more details. Old friend? Mia assumes it is Mr. Scott, the chief justice of the New York Supreme Court, that Mr. Garcia refers to. She heard that Mr. Scott and Mr. Powell went back a long way—they met each other during their freshman year at Stanford and hit it off instantly. Two cars are waiting at the gate of the mansion. One is the black Rolls-Royce Mr. Powell usually takes. She steps into the other black Land Rover and sits in the passenger seat. In ten minutes, Mr. Garcia walks out of the mansion with sour-faced Mr. Powell and they get in the Rolls-Royce. Then the cars start off. With just the driver and her in the car, Mia relaxes a little bit. Everyone in the mansion is tense since the arrest of Anthony. She has witnessed lots of drama played in the study, Mr. Powell blaming his wife for spoiling and ruining their oldest son, Mrs. Powel

Chapter 37 Promise
Everything went into a blur after Mr. Powell left. All Mia could remember was Chris taking her into his car and driving them to the house in Brooklyn. He said something in the car and kissed her hand to soothe her, but her mind failed to register his words. It takes her a while to realize where she is when she wakes up on the bed. The room is dark with curtains drawn. Chris’ familiar and intoxicating scent fills the bedroom, warming and relaxing her. She gets up and slips off the bed to search for him. The house is so quiet that the unsettled feelings resurface. Chris raises his head from the paper he is busy with when Mia appears in the doorway of the study. “Hi, how is your nap?” He smiles and marches right up to embrace her. “It is not a nap. I slept for 4 hours. You should have woken me up.” Mia presses her head against his chest, closing her eyes to enjoy his warmth. “You are exhausted. I want you to take a good rest.” He says, his hand gently massaging her scalp, earning a

Chapter 38 Laura
“I’ll be alright, Jack will be with me.” Mia squeezes Chris’ arm, trying to assure him. “I don’t understand why you must go there in person. Jack can deliver your resignation letter to him.” Chris holds her tightly, unwilling to let her go. “I do have to hand over a few confidential projects to Sussie. It is better to do that in person. Relax, I don’t think your father will do anything to me in his office building. Wouldn’t that be too blatant?” “I don’t want to risk anything when it comes to you,” Chris says firmly. “I know, but you cannot keep me in the house secluded and secured from everyone for the rest of my life, right?” “If I have to do that, I will,” Chris vows, earning a gentle slap on his back from Mia. “You will not! I don’t want to be Rapunzel. I promise I will keep Jack around me wherever I go. Okay?”“I’m going with you if you insist on doing the whole resignation thing in person.” “No, remember you have to give a speech at the annual stakeholder meeting this mo

Chapter 39 Reunion
Mia paces back and forth in the living room. She digs her fingernails into her palms to calm her nerves, while her brother Calvin is excited with joy and anticipation. “It is almost 11 o’clock. Are you sure she will visit us?” He asks, his eyes twinkling with hope. “Yeah. She will.” Unless something happens. But Mia keeps that to herself. She hasn’t told Calvin how she came to locate Laura, too afraid to frighten his brother with the horror scenes she witnessed through a cell phone. Chris called her half an hour ago that they were on their way to her apartment. But anything could happen. What if Mr. Powell goes back on his word? What if something happens on the way? What if bad things happen to Laura and Chris? Her legs feel weak at the thought. She cannot stand the idea of losing Laura, and worst, losing Chris. She would rather die herself than see him hurt or lose him. “Mia, are you alright?” Sensing her sudden weakness, Calvin wheels to her and helps her to the sofa. “I’m jus

Chapter 40 What’s next
“Anthony Powell, the heir of the multi-billionaire dollar Powell Empire, walks free from the court today after key witnesses withdraw their testimonies. The prosecutors have dropped their charges against the businessman. He was previously accused of colluding with the notorious terrorist…” The news anchor’s monotone voice stops after Chris turns off the TV. He walks to the window and runs his fingers through his hair. He hides his frustration well in front of Mia, never showing any signs or feelings and keeping tight-lipped about the matter. But when he thinks Mia is not around or he is alone, his emotion will emerge on the surface. Right now, Mia could tell how frustrated and defeated he is seeing Anthony walking free and clear of charges. Quietly descending the stairs, Mia walks toward him and hugs him from behind. His muscles visibly relax once he feels the familiar warm body pressing against him. “How are you?” Mia whispers. “I’m fine,” he answers gently, his hand covering
