Chapter 47 Arms of Refuge
Max is a keeper of his word. He was really going to make a deal with Calix Hooper to get him out in exchange of his information but as soon as his mind was filled with all the odious stories of Iris, he couldn’t suddenly grasp the reason why he should help him get free. He still had so many questions—where are the Nightcrawlers are hiding now? Is it really true that Lieutenant Fonollosa was dead? Who is that Lieutenant and just how powerful is he to cover the crime that he did on Iris’ family? Does Iris really had that ability that Pavo Hatcher inflicted on her? He could remember all the inexplicable times when he really thought that were only an effect of the medications he’s taking. He remember the very first time he saw Iris do it, the second day after she came in St. Valen’s unit. He definitely saw at the corner of his eyes when Iris was facing him as he talked with an offi

Chapter 48 Two for One
“You found anything?” Lance swerved around to peer at Hoon’s computer and saw him scrolling through Max’s data. Lance sighed and said, “That’s not what you’re supposed to do, Dude.” Hoon shrugged. “I just wanted to research a few more facts about him. I can’t believe he’s that kind, we shouldn’t trust kindness remember.” Hoon clicked on one link and a thousand codes of numbers and alphabets colored in green and red filled the screen in columns, flowing like a stream of water. After a whole minute, it came into a halt with a bar blinking for a few times before the screen turned white and St. Valen’s database flashed right in front of their eyes. “Ah-ssa!” he exclaimed and giddily scrolled down on hundred police officers’ profiles. He hovered to the search engine and typed Max’s name. “You better

Chapter 49 The First Trigger
Hoon banged his head against the table and yanked it upward quickly, the sound of the loud thump made Lance flinch who was behind him drinking his coffee, it almost spilled on his shirt. Massaging his reddened forehead, Hoon yawned and turned to him. “My eyes are already stinging,” he said sleepy. Lance rolled his eyes at him and squeezed his eyes with his fingers. “Claire said we should head back to the dorm as soon as we finish this,” he answered and glanced at the clock that was nearing to tick at twelve midnight. “But she didn’t said it will be today. She probably meant tomorrow morning.” They both looked at Claire who was sitting on the carpet with her eyes glued on her laptop, and across her sitting was Max who was also doing the same. For hours of tracing every police officer’s phone who was working on that prison, they didn’t mutter a word except when they ask if som

Chapter 50 At The Edge of His Seat
“She’s been like that for a couple of months now.” Hoon pulled Claire’s blanket further over her chest. Max was sitting beside her across, staring with the worry still engraved on his face. “What do you mean for months? She didn’t tell me anything,” Max answered. Partly, he kind of actually understand why he doesn’t know much about Claire for the past month—the past year, even. He was aloof from her, and avoiding much conversations that might lead to a topic about Iris. Devastated was the term he named for the feeling in his chest, but he also knows it roots on penitence. He could’ve saved Claire, he could have done better choices that night, but instead Iris was the one who even let her free and he lost her too. While he was just there, standing still like a coward that he is. And from then on, he couldn’t even utter her name anymore, as if it was something that

Chapter 51 They are Back
“He’s been shot three times to the chest and head. The shooter came at around eight in the evening just in time when Calix’s food will be delivered. He clearly knows when to attack, more so when’s the best time to take the opportunity to kill Hooper.” The Chief turned his screen around for Max to see and played the video tape from the prison cells. The old man from the front desk was seen sleeping on the footage, both his feet placed over his desk, Max heard the Chief sighed in disappointment. A couple of police officers went in, and parted ways after glancing at each other. Their faces weren’t visible because of the police cap and surgical masks they were wearing and the thick-framed glasses which blocked the sight of their eyes. The Chief flicked the screen to another camera which was giving out the view of the cells and the elevator that goes upward. One of those masked officer walked in and glanced on ea

Chapter 52 The Losing Side
Lance pulled Max away from Claire’s room and saw Hoon staring at them as they go. “Where are you guys going?” he asked, frowning. “There is something that we need to discuss, and it will be fully confidential,” Lance answered. Hoon nodded and stood up, he walked towards them and opened the door. “Let’s go!” he said. Lance sighed at him, shaking his head as they went out, but Max abruptly stopped. “How about Martin?” he asked and glanced around at her door. Max was still suspicious of the whole phone call that they just had. He was certain that they aren’t alone at that time and that there was someone else in the house. “Are you sure you guys didn’t had any visitors?” Lance shrugged. “Claire doesn’t allow visitors. Remember? We even turn street cameras elsewhere whenever you or us come here?&r

Chapter 53 Tending the Rift
Max didn’t turn to see who it was. No, he couldn’t. There wasn’t much people in his list to know who was the person behind him and a few names have run on his mind but one felt stronger than the others. And the voice when the person spoke confirmed his guess. “Drop your weapon on the floor,” said a woman’s firm voice, one that he’s been seeking to hear for almost a year, and the one which made his heart jump in joy despite the situation they were in. Max carefully dropped his gun on the floor and placed both of his hands in the air. “Turn around,” the voice once demanded. Slowly, Max turned around, anticipating a shock expression on Iris’ face upon seeing him. But as he turned around, the terror chose to wear his face instead. In front of him was indeed Iris, Max was sure about that. But she didn’t look anything like her. Half of her face was ch

Chapter 54 A Promise Made
Max wanted to defend himself, to say that what his father did was not a crime for him to bear nor what he needs to pay. He wanted to voice out the frustrations, the anger, the resentment towards his father, but most of all he wanted to tell Iris how unfair it is for her to say that he’s unworthy for her trust anymore. But none of the intrusive words came out from his lips, because what he felt was different from what he wants to do; sympathy. Because of all people, he should be the one first to know how it feels like to lose a parent. So even though she was glowering at him like he was the one who murdered her parents, he deeply breathed and nodded at her. “This is your only chance to go with me, Anderson. Please, let me save you this time.” “No!” Iris yelled. She pulled out the gun once again and pointed it at his head. Her trembling hands told Max that she was still being watched. “I don&rs

Chapter 55 The Enigmatic Guy
“It feels so good not getting your hands dirty just to kill someone, don’t you think? I always wonder why the hell aren’t you enjoying much of this power.” Iris spit the blood from her mouth. Her wrists felt like being pricked by a thousand needles, she stepped on her foot, and screamed in pain when it slipped on the wet metal floor, pulling her body down but restrained with the metal chains that were tied up tightly around her hands. She wanted to cry, but even shedding a tear felt exhausting for her body. And instead, it bled nonstop. William stepped closer to her, he held her chin and tilted her head up, getting a clearer view of her swollen and scarred face. “Tsk tsk tsk,” he clicked his tongue, his cold fingers trailed on her forehead and tucking in the strands of her hair soaking with her sweat. His touch was delicate like a fallen leaf brushing against her skin. “I can’t keep doing this

Chapter 56 Out of Control
Max drove like a maniac going back to Claire’s place. Two times he had beaten the re lights and his cellphone was ringing nonstop from the Chief’s calls. He sought every shortcuts that he knew—a sort of advantage for being a detective. Once he arrived at the building, he sprinted upstairs, not waiting for the elevator anymore upon seeing it was stuck at the seventh floor. He was already at the front door when it burst open in his face, he saw Hoon—soaking in sweat and his eyes filled with horror—standing on the doorway looking at him. “Hoon!” he exclaimed. Hoon immediately jumped to hug him as he cried, lips trembling as he tried to speak but uttered no word. He pulled Hoon away and stared at his eyes. “Where’s Lance??” he asked but Hoon was too frightened to speak. “Stay here, okay?” he demanded and walked inside with his gun in his hands. “Claire?&r
