Chapter Eleven
Alison was at a loss for words as she lay beneath her sleeping lover.  Nick surprised her by falling asleep almost immediately.  He’d left his manhood inside her after he’d peaked, and she was concerned about the consequences. It didn’t seem very romantic to bring up this fact, but, since she was a virgin and not on birth control and he wasn’t wearing a condom, it was something she needed to concern herself with. She could easily see how women lost their senses and threw caution to the wind during love making. Hadn’t she done just that?  Not once during their time together had she even broached the subject of using protection. Her only concern was putting out the fire in her loins that built up to a point of being almost unbearable.   Maybe if he’d pulled out of her before he’d reached his heights of passion, she wouldn’t be so worried.  Now, she lay with the heaviest man on earth sleeping sou

When Alison awoke, Nick was still fast asleep next to her. Sometime during the night he’d managed to wrap his leg and arm over her in a possessive manner.  Although confining, it felt nice. She slid from beneath his muscular limbs as gently as she could.  She was still tender from their love making, but the bleeding stopped.  A wave of relief swept over her as she remembered Vanessa’s fear that Nick might have torn her.Dressing as quickly and carefully as she could, she slipped out of the bedroom, taking one last look at the gorgeous man she left sleeping. With a satisfied smile on her face, she went to Vanessa’s room to see if she was awake.Vanessa’s face was buried in the pillow as she lay naked on top of the bed. “Did you come to ravage me?”“Are you talking to the pillow or me?” Alison teased. Vanessa rolled onto her back and stretched her sinewy body in a catlike manner, mindless of the

Chapter Thirteen
“Do you think we’re lesbians now?” Alison asked as she positioned her Mini Cooper into a parking spot at the local drugstore.“I know a lot of girls in college who have experimented and they’re not lesbians.  We did less than they did, so… no… I don’t believe this makes us lesbians,” Vanessa replied.  She turned in the seat to look long and hard at her friend.  “I thought we agreed not to talk about it again.”“We won’t,” Alison said as she pretended to lock her lip and throw away the key. “I just needed to get that question off my chest.  No more need to talk or think about it.”Vanessa got a devilish look in her eye as she slyly undid her seatbelt while pretending to adjust the radio.  When she was sure she could move freely and quickly, she twisted around and took Alison’s clothed breast in her mouth while slamming her hand into her

Martin stood in the doorway of Alison’s bedroom with a scowl on his face. “That’s what he gets for trying to beat me through the gate.”Alison gave him a puzzled look, while Vanessa quietly scolded him that now wasn’t the time.He smiled meekly before going to Nick and inspecting his condition. “He’s too heavy for me to carry back to the guest house and he’s going to be like this for a few days,” Martin said with certainty. “I can, however, help make the room, bed, and him more presentable before Wilma returns.  What excuse you give her for him being comatose in your bed is your business.”Martin rolled Nick back and forth so that Vanessa and Alison could pull the bedding off the bed and remake it. He slowly shook his head and closed his eyes at the sight of the blood and semen stained coverlet, but said nothing.  Even so, Alison wanted to crawl underneath the bed and not come out.

Wilma could feel the tension in the air as soon as she set her bags down on the kitchen counter and hung her keys on the key rack by the door.  She searched the kitchen with her faded blue eyes, but could see nothing that looked amiss. It was late afternoon and only two days before Nick would go into retreat.  She didn’t expect to see him outside doing heavy labor, but he hadn’t finished all of the planting of the garden.  It was possible she’d find him sowing the last rows of seeds.  Something wasn’t right, and she needed to know what it could be.  Nick would tell her.Stepping onto the back porch, she shaded her eyes to help her better see into the immense garden. It produced far more vegetables than they could ever think of using over the course of the year, but it wasn’t planted just for the household use.  Long ago, the aunts made the decision to donate at least half of their crop each year -no matter the

Wilma shook her head.  Either she was a fool who was just sweet talked by a suave shadow walker, or Martin was genuinely smitten with Allison and wanted to help. She hoped, for all their sakes, it was the first because, if Martin was going to compete with Nick for Alison, it could ruin their plans. After asking to speak with Martin alone, he and Wilma spent a considerable amount of time behind closed doors. During that time, Martin spoke openly and honestly about his jealousies and competitiveness where Nick was concerned.  He confirmed Elsie and Beth’s fears of him coveting Alison for his own personal gain.  He even admitted that, in the beginning, it was exactly why he approached her. Then, to his amazement, he discovered he genuinely had feelings for the girl.  He told Wilma about his conversation with Nick and Nick’s fears of the possibility that Alison just might like him better.  After all, the elders had connected their families, no

Vanessa sat at the kitchen table while she waited for Wilma to finish brewing the tea. She’d picked the housekeeper’s brain about shadow walkers until she was sure she knew as much as Wilma did about them, but it didn’t feel like it was enough.  A cool breeze swept past her causing her to look around the room for the source. The windows and doors were closed.“Did you feel that?” she asked.“Feel what, child?” Wilma asked as she focus on swirling the tea bag around in the teapot to help speed up the brewing process. Nick placed his hand over hers. Although she couldn’t see him, she could feel the coolness of his touch.  “Now, I feel it.  There must be a draft coming from somewhere.”  She placed the teapot and a tea cup and saucer set in front of Vanessa and added,” I want to go check things out.  Here’s your tea.  I’ll be back in a minute.”Vanessa j

Vanessa hurried outside as Martin’s McLaren 570GT pulled up in front of the grand estate house.   She stopped, briefly, to admire the expensive sports car before babbling about the cold breezes in the house when it was all closed up.“You’re right about this place,” she said to Alison as Martin helped her from the car. “It’s super creepy. I’m ready to leave.”“You can’t leave me,” Alison practically screeched as she pulled away from Martin’s light embrace and firmly grabbed Vanessa’s upper arms. “Please, not yet.  In two days Martin will be leaving for his retreat thing and I’ll be all alone.”“You’ll have Wilma here,” Vanessa said. “That’s not the same and you know it,” Alison said.“I have to go back tonight, or I’ll lose my job,” Vanessa said apologetically.  “I told

Chapter Nineteen
Nick paced the palace hall as he waited for his turn to go before King Rufus.  He’d rehearsed what he was going to say so many times it sounded ‘canned’ to him.  He only hoped he’d chosen the correct words to get the king to understand his request.  He needed to get back to Alison; not just for her safely, but to keep Martin from doing any more damage to the elder’s plan of having him be the one to be with Alison. The summons came, and he took a deep breath.  It all rested on the plea he’d formulated.  His palms were wet with sweat, as was his torso, as he second guessed his choice of words. After all, he wasn’t trained in public speaking.  He thought how Martin would address the king. He’d be suave and convincing. Nick had no doubt that Martin’s request would be granted without a second thought. Nick knew he couldn’t be as articulate as Martin, but he hoped his efforts would be good eno

Chapter Twenty
Martin paced the drive of Alison’s estate while he waited for them to return from their joyride. It was hours since they left, and he was getting concerned.  If he was able to discover who she was and why she was there, then others could too.  With Nick’s mundane body lying inert in her bedroom and his shadow self not available to defend it, he held that responsibility; as well as keeping watch for rogue shadow walkers wanting to destroy Alison before she could take the throne; as well as their mundane counterparts who knew about the shadow walkers and wanted to see them destroyed.  There was also the recruiters for the darkness to consider.  Getting their hands on someone of Alison’s station would be an enormous feather in their cap.  ***  They were too young to get served in a bar, but the fake I.D. Vanessa produced was good enough to fool the young clerk at the liquor store i
