Chapter Twenty-One
Eyes were moist from gratitude and relief of their long and arduous journey finally ending as the travelers entered the compound that was once a health camp, but now served as their home.Felix excitedly gave Oriana and her family a tour of the place.  They took extra time in the spa location that offered each of them a clean robe, slippers, and a set of spa pants and top for them to change into once they’d cleaned up. Imogene and Oriana were eager to experience the shower.  Having lived their lives in the wilderness, they were only mildly aware of the concept of indoor plumbing and heated water being pumped through pipes for washing.  Felix had to disguise his amusement over the childlike awe that they openly displayed when he demonstrated how the toilet flushed and the sink and shower produced water on demand.Since the lodge was built to accommodate large groups of people at a time, Kendra’s family only occupied a small portio

Chapter Twenty-Two
The awkwardness of newness while getting to know and trust each other went on for days before a sizeable horde of zombies found a weak point in the long neglected fence and they were forced to work together to fight them off.Vernon and Imogene proved incredibly efficient and adept at taking down a large number of zombies between them.  When it was all over, Rex  -who was grateful for such assistance- spoke their praises loud and clear. Imogene explained that, as wanderers, they stumbled into an infested area and met up with zombies on a regular basis for a considerable length of time until they were able to find a territory more sparsely populated with them.  They quickly developed a method of working together to protect each other while swiftly eliminating the threat. Oriana wasn’t quite as bold as her sister and brother-in-law in battle, but she still managed to hold her own against them.  She was aided by Felix, who took

Chapter Twenty-Three
Felix and Vernon proved to be compatible workmates.  It took only a matter of days for them to put their heads together and create a sturdy confinement for the alien that would allow them access to it without worry.  When they were shown its clever conveniences for the sake of the caretaker, Olga, Rex, and Kendra were not only relieved, but impressed by the fact that most of the ideas came from Felix.Being the family handyman, Rex took his time inspecting the facility.  His broad smile when he informed them that he couldn’t have done better- or maybe not even as good- made Kendra’s heart swell with pride for her cousin.  She was sorry that Oriana hadn’t been made privy of the project so that she could hear the praises being showered upon him.  She was sure that it would help reinforce whatever attraction was between them.“So, what’s next?” Vernon asked with open enthusiasm. “I haven’t felt this

Chapter Twenty-Four
Alice paced the interior of her room while she worried about what to do.  She’d lied to Arthur and the others about who she was and how she’d lived.  So far, no one had questioned the wanderer family about her life with them so they didn’t know that she’d only been a part of that group for a few years.  During that time, she’d made sure to make herself useful by appeasing the men working for the aliens -like Rupert- in whatever way deemed necessary. She pounded her left fist into the palm of her right hand as she held back the scream of frustration that was trying to escape.  It was just bad luck that they’d come upon that family.  Eventually they’d converse about her and the truth would come out.  She couldn’t have that. She’d traveled all the way to the center of the earth for a fresh start.  Meeting Arthur gave her a chance to remake herself and to belong.  She’

Chapter Twenty-Five
“I never believed in vampires,” Olga admitted, “but I’m beginning to suspect that there is fact behind that myth.”“What are you saying?” Felix asked with concern. They’d gone onto the front porch to admire the sunset and found themselves alone.  This was a rarity these days.  Taking advantage of the moment, they discussed things that were meant for their ears only.Olga heaved a sigh. “Kendra is a puzzle.  I’m beginning to think that the combination of the inoculation for the original virus and the introduction of the new strain created an entirely new beast.”His eyes opened wide.  “Do you think that she’s a vampire?”“She’s alive and vampires are dead,” she said. “Or, so the story goes.  I don’t think she’s a vampire per se, but she has vampire tendencies; such as drinking blood.”He shudde

Chapter Twenty-Six
Alice stood in the shadows of the tree line.  She grit her teeth in anger while she watched Felix converse with Oriana.  The little slut was making the most of the situation by leaning against a tree in a manner that best showed off the curves of her lean figure.Had she known that she’d have competition for Felix, Alice would have had the wrinkles on her body removed along with those on her face.  It was just that her vanity came into play.  After she’d successfully fulfilled her mission, she intended to return to her planet.  Having a completely smooth body back home would be a disaster.  As it was, she would have to endure surgery to return her face to normal. She wished that she had supernatural powers like the aliens who invaded and took over earth; or even like Kendra, Rex, and Olga.  Some sort of gift would come in handy right now.  Unfortunately, she had to rely on strength that resembled that of a human and h

Chapter Twenty-Seven
Oriana peered out of the picture window that was strategically centered in the great room wall to provide an optimal panoramic view of the premises.  Not only could she not believe her eyes, but she was unsure if she should bring what she was seeing to the attention of her sister and Olga, who were busy baking in the kitchen.“What are  you staring at?” Imogene asked as she took the last loaf of freshly baked bread from the oven. “Yum.  This smells delicious.”“I make it my policy to bake a mini loaf for taste testing,” Olga said with a twinkle in her eye.  Sliding the warm, mini loaf down the counter until it was in front of Imogene, she said, “It wouldn’t do to serve bad bread, now would it?”“Absolutely not,” the younger woman giggled.Taking a thin slice of the soft, freshly baked bread for herself, Olga sauntered over to where Oriana stood and looked out in the dire

Chapter Twenty-Eight
Rex leaned against the wall while he allowed his body the opportunity to rejuvenate.  Capturing and bringing home the three zombies in one piece had not been easy. They’d gone to an area that they knew zombies favored and dug a fairly deep pit.  After which, they lined it with netting from the volleyball court and waited.  The ground was harder than expected, so, by the time they’d achieved the desired depth, they were pretty tired.  There was also the stress factor.  It was a tense time since the zombies could have arrived at any moment.Once the pit was set up, they slipped into the trees and waited.  Either time passed quickly or they didn’t have to wait long, he couldn’t be sure since he’d closed his eyes and gone into meditation in hopes of understanding why his home had an odd feel in the air.  Vernon had been nothing but amiable and helpful, as was his family.  He simply couldn’t underst

Chapter Twenty-Nine
Kendra led her horse to the creek.  The day had been long and the hunting difficult, but she’d finally managed to catch a few rabbits and a racoon.  She was grateful to have found the water.  She’d used the last of the water that she’d packed several hours earlier.  She wasn’t far from the compound, but when one was tired and thirsty, a few miles could prove tortuous.  Even if she was willing to suffer the rest of the way, it wasn’t fair to make her horse suffer along with her. They’d been back on the surface long enough to reacclimate to its arid climate, yet she still managed to miscalculate water usage from time to time.  That was one of the few things that she missed about the earth’s core.  It held just the right amount of moisture to maintain a comfortable climate with lush landscapes.  Prior to going to the earth’s interior, her body was able to function on small doses of water.&nbs

Chapter Thirty
Rex held his hand up to signal Felix to stop his horse.  Without speaking, he pointed through the trees in the direction of a nearby clearing.  Felix took a moment to study the scene before him, nodded, and dismounted.  They slowly walked their horses toward an area that was dense with oversized bushes. “That strange woman is wrinkled like Alice,” Felix whispered. “Do you think she has the disease as well?”“Kendra has an arrow pointed at her,” Rex whispered back.  “I want to get closer to hear what is being said.”One of the mutation effects that Rex experienced from his early childhood nuclear contamination exposure was acute hearing.  Therefore, he was the better person to move closer to listen.  Realizing this, Felix nodded and took the reins of both horses. Rex was gone only a matter of minutes before he returned white faced and shaking with anger. “Alice
