Chapter 40
Just as Gerald had predicted, it was a busy morning. There were so many visitors coming to offer their condolences, most of the nobles and Serena had to welcome them all, being a good host like she was trained to be. The ballroom was filled with people dressed in dark clothing, standing and discussing with each other. On a first glance you might think there were talking about the deceased but it's actually about the host, Serena. While most of them said words of comfort and pity to her, behind her back they whispered words of scorn. Some didn't even try to hide their displeasure as they spoke about her openly. Their words were all the same, Serena wasn't fit to be a duchess. The words were like a knife to her already battered heart but she didn't give them the satisfaction of seeing her weak and crying. A small smile on her face, she greeted them all with respect. Glancing over to Gerald, she noticed how professionally he handled the guests, speaking to them with the au

Chapter 41
" Why weren't you at the party earlier today?" Damien asked, puffing out smoke from his mouth. He was sitting down at the waiting room, relaxed. He had come to see her after returning from the party. Scarlett glanced at him, fuming at the question. " How could I be there? Gerald kicked me out." She muttered angrily, her lips pursed. " It's all because of that brat, Serena." She mumbled. Damien chuckled, taking a swig from the wine bottle in front of him. He stood up, walking behind her. Turning back, he leaned in, hovering over from her behind. " This is why I said we need to team up. If we had, that wouldn't have happened." He muttered, amusingly. Damien smelled of tobacco and wine, a sharp contrast to Gerald's expensive cologne. Scarlett grimaced, hating that he was right. Shifting uncomfortably on her seat, she turned to him. " What do you want me to do now? I feel like I'm losing him and if that happens, neither of us will get what we want."

The party soon ended and Scarlett was on her way home with Damien in the chariot with her. She was really pissed at him. " What kind of plan was that?" She asked, infuriated. " The only thing you did all night was talk and dance with Serena!" Damien glanced at her, fishing out a lighter from his pocket. The corners of his mouth turned up as he leaned on the chair, the chariot moving. " No, what I did was to be her knight, she was a damsel in distress. Besides, how could I refuse the chance to dance with that beautiful lady? You saw how everyone eyes were on us, no?" " How does that help anything?" Scarlett stated, glaring daggers at him. He chuckled, lighting up the tobacco between his lips. He waited for the red glow before drawing in a long puff. Releasing the smoke, he pinned his eyes on Scarlett. " I stay with Serena, you stay with Gerald. It's that simple. That way we can both get what we want." " Moreover, we need to break whatever ties th

" What!? She really did that?" Scarlett asked, earning a nod from Gerald. Gerald had told her everything a few weeks later. She'd come to see when she noticed her been making no more moves to divorce Serena as she'd expected. He made her realize that his mother had made it impossible for that to happen. If he goes ahead with the divorce, he'd lose everything the Winchester had to offer to her. " That sneaky woman!" Scarlett gritted under her breath. She did not forsee this at all! To Gerald she said, " is there nothing you can do about it?" " Not really. Well, I have to stay with Serena for another seven months so it can all go back to me." He said. " Seven months?!" Scarlett repeated. That's an awfully long and short time. Long enough for Gerald's impression on Serena to change and he decides not to go ahead with the divorce. She can't let that happen! " Are you okay? Are you alright with all of this?" Scarlett asked, walking over to Gerald where

(Two months later) Serena sat in front of the mirror, watching as Lana combed out her hair. She was getting ready to go the market to get a few dresses in preparation for the tea parties she would be hosting. " Lana, where is his grace?" She asked, breaking the silence. Lana paused on her hair, glancing at Serena through the mirror. She hesitated a bit before replying. " I'm not too sure, my lady. I overheard the maids saying he went out early this morning." " Oh...." She muttered, pursing her lips. It's been like this for the past two months now. They've been keeping away from each other at her request. They live in the same house but she rarely sees him. Only at dinner and that was once in a while. He's out before she wakes up and returns when she's sleeping. On days that he around, he's buried in his study. She's not complaining about it though. It was liberating in the least. Soon she was done dressing up and she left with Lana in a carriage. It was a sho

Damien flaunted his gift to Scarlett, smiling as he saw the frown on her face. She absolutely hated it but he didn't mind. " Has Gerald ever bought you things like this?" He asked, visibly taunting her. Scarlett scoffed, looking away even as her shoulders tensed. " Of course he does..." She replied, her voice filled with jealousy and anger. " He does send me things." " I'm not talking about gifts from doing your duties as a Mistress. Heartfelt ones." Scarlett's scowl deepened at the question as she searched her head for an answer. Gerald has never bought her one, she thought bitterly to herself. " It's so beautiful I almost don't want to sell it." Damien said sadly. " But you will." Scarlett stated. " Of course..." He stated haughtily, shrugging. " Why are you even here, showing me this?" Scarlett said, suddenly angry. A smirk worked it's way into Damien's face as he sat here. " No reason. I just wanted to show it to

" It's about my marriage. " She began, her voice low and hesitant. An evil glint appeared in his eyes. Finally! He has her where what he wants her! A good feeling bubbled in his stomach, spreading all over him. To her, he said. " What about it?" " It's not exactly the greatest." She continued, walking ahead, Damien following close behind her. " Well, marriages aren't exactly bed of roses." He said "What troubles you, my lady? Is the Duke not treating you right?" He asked. " Well, he's quite alright." She opened her mouth to say something else but snapped it shut, walking ahead. " You know what? Nevermind what I said." She told him. Damien paused in displeasure but he didn't let it show in his face. Catching up to her, he glanced at her with a warm smile on her face. " If your marriage isn't favorable to you, you can always leave. No one wants to be unhappy forever." She turned to look at him, an half- smile on her face. " Thanks, I'll r

( A week later) " Is anything the matter, dear?" Scarlett asked, drawing invisible lines on Gerald's chest as she watched him lost in his thoughts. He glanced at her, his eyes brooding and his lips drawn in a thin line. " Nothing." He replied after a while. " I'm sure there is a lot of things wrong. Why are you think so deeply? Is it something I did?" She asked, hoping that wasn't the case. He'd been with her all day but he had been oddly disconnected. " No, it's not what you did. I just want to be left alone." He replied gruffly. A flash of anger crossed her eyes but she blinked and it was gone. Sitting up on the bed where they lay, she began running her hands through his hair in hopes of what she thought was a soothing gesture. " I don't believe you. You've been looking grim all day. If you don't talk about it, I'll never know." She said softly, a worried look on her face. " I'm not sure it's the topic you want me to talk about." He told her

Serena stared at the bowl of soup in front of her, wondering what she was doing outside. She'd been staying in her room, reading a book when a maid had informed her that Mr Murphy was waiting for her. Wondering why he would see her without a request for invitation, she'd gone to see him and here she is. Although she was having fun, she couldn't help but feel uncomfortable. " Are you having fun, my lady?" Damien asked, a charming smile on his face. Serena glanced at him, nodding. She looked around, watching the crowd. Smiling back, she replied. " I can't say I'm not. I didn't realize there was a festival going on in town." " It's quite a popular one really, I'm surprised you didn't know about it." He said. Serena shrugged, taking a spoonful of the soup in front of her. Surely, it smelled delicious. Scooping into her mouth, she widened her eyes. It tasted great as well. She swallowed before replying. " I don't go out that often." " I can see that." Damien said, grinning. They co

" Get your hands off my wife." Came the deep venomous voice behind Damien, hinting at the barely controlled anger. Damien froze. Shit! Shit!! Shit!!! He cussed. Slowly, he turned around to see a huge figure looming over him. The streets were still crowded, but in that moment, Damien felt like it was just he and Gerald. He resisted the urge to pull his hands away from the barely conscious Serena. " Your Grace!" He called out enthusiastically, effectively covering up the shock he felt. " It's a surprise seeing you here!" " Get. Your. Hands. Off my wife." Gerald grated out again, more dreadfully. Fear sizzled down his spine. " I would love to do that. But you see, she's barely conscious. I'm afraid she had a little too much to drink." He replied as normally as ever. Why did Gerald have to show up now that he drugged Serena? In a few steps, Gerald was directly in front of Damien. He snatched her from his hands, pulling her to his side so sh
