Chapter 31
**** Beta Jayvon **** It's almost midnight, and I'm trying to convince my drunk Alpha buddy to go to bed. He doesn't let himself get this drunk often. Usually, he insists on perfect self-control. That self-discipline is the one thing his father never had and the one thing Enzi has always tried to maintain to prove to himself that he'll never be like the old Alpha. Not that the way he went about it was always perfect. Today is her 21st birthday. It's also the anniversary of when she left him. Technically, she left the day before her birthday, but it's this day each year that he's always a wreck. If she'd stayed just one more day, Enzi would have explained everything. If she'd stayed just one more day, the mate bond would have snapped in for her. Not that Enzi wanted to rely on the bond, but he hoped it would encourage her to give him a chance, encourage her to listen. He wanted her to love him for him. To understand that the choices he made were for her protection. But she left just

**** Alyssa **** “One of the best things about being an adult is that no one can tell you cake isn’t a breakfast food,” Nathan says, laying a fabulous cream-covered, fruit-topped creation crowned with sparklers and a handful of tall skinny gold candles on the table in front of me, the sweet fruity scent tickling my sleepy senses. I’ve been up a whole four minutes, thanks to my friends bouncing on my bed and loudly serenading me with Happy Birthday. “My birthday was yesterday,” I yawn for the second time this morning. I might not be physically capable of showing it yet, but I truly appreciated this sweet gesture. “Nope. Since Emily here hasn’t slept yet, it’s still your birthday. That’s my theory, and I’m sticking to it. Now, blow out those candles and make a wish,” Dara demands. “Oh, no! I gave up on wishes a long time ago. This is truly amazing, though, thanks everyone,” I smile, rubbing the last crystal bits of sleep from my eyes. “Well, aren’t we surly in the morning? You’re

Chapter 33
**** Beta Jayvon **** Her apartment is located in a cheap neighborhood with dirty, dangerous streets. Enzi would die if he knew this was where his treasured princess was living. I pick the lock, a skill I learned a couple of years ago when I realized that she taught herself how to pick locks in order to escape us. I was surprised at how easy it was to open an allegedly locked door. The wolf hearing helped. I click the door closed behind me and take a minute to survey the apartment from the door, knowing I'd need to make sure I leave everything exactly as I found it. Pulling out my iPhone, I take a few shots of her apartment from every angle from my spot at the door for later reference. She's neat, neater than I was at 21, that's for damn sure. Not crazy neat like an OCD maniac, it's more like she's a minimalist. Then it clicks. Perhaps she's a minimalist by necessity. There's not a lot here that's deeply personal. Some photos I see as I start to wander around her living room area.

Chapter 34
**** Alyssa **** Arriving at work this evening, I can't help but smirk to myself. Finally, I'm legally old enough to work at the bar I've been working at for almost three years now. I walk in with an extra bounce in my step, and I'm a little early. Last night, despite my occasional bouts of paranoia, was wonderful. Still, the gnawing feeling that my time here has run out continued to grow throughout the day. Like I'd reached an unwritten expiration date on my peace here. I'd been trying to push that feeling aside all day. What if it was already too late? I shake my paranoia from my brain and dive into work. While I hadn't planned on staying here this long, I've certainly settled in. I have friends I love, a job I enjoy, and a rewarding side hobby. All day I've been mentally debating my plans to leave in true Shakespearean fashion, to go, or not to go, that is the question... To go would mean being alone again, leaving the amazing support system I built here. Venturing once again in

Chapter 35
**** Alyssa **** "She said no," I hear Luke's voice chime in, slowly enunciating each word, his tone heavy with menace. Goddess, I love him — in that father figure, non-creepy way. Looking back, I see Luke and Nathan now also surrounded by Enzi's warriors. I sigh, "Please, go back in. The last thing I wanted was to involve any of you." A werebear is way stronger than a werewolf, but a werewolf is rarely alone. Enzi has at least a dozen guys here. While Luke is scary as all heck in his were form, he'd struggle against this many, even with me by his side. And no, I'm not counting Nathan. A muse has many talents, but fighting is not one of them, not for Nathan, anyway. Luke and I could take several down with us if it came down to it. If I had to fight my way out on my own, I would, but I'd rather swim naked in a piranha-riddled river than have my friends caught in the cross-claws of my problems. So, flight it is! "Please, come with me," Enzi repeats. I raise an eyebrow slightly

**** Alyssa **** Within minutes the SIB types sweep through the parking lot where we are and split into two groups, half surrounding us and half pouring into the building. Soon after, all the human customers come flying out of the restaurant and bar. From the snatches of conversation I hear as people pass, it sounds like SIB jerks are claiming a significant gas leak from another building nearby. I've only heard rumors about the royal guard tossers — that's who I'm assuming these people are, judging by the small matching emblems on the left breast of each suit. Apparently, the entire block is being evacuated. While I'm glad they are not dumping the blame on Luke's business alone, I'm not thrilled that, other than Luke and Nathan, I'm surrounded by potential enemies. Soon, for a mile at least, they'll be no one but Enzi's pack warriors and these new SIB tossers. I can also see flashing lights at either end of the street. Great. Every second I stand here, the noose they have on the a

Chapter 37
**** Alyssa **** “I’m so sorry! In my defense, when the bear growled, your wolf clamped his jaws tighter. I was happy until then to let him think he had me bested. I wanted to avoid this fight, but then when he bit down, I had to get him off me,” the Duke tries explaining as he kneels beside me. I hear the words, but they still don’t quite register. Frantically trying to stem the bleeding, my hands slipped in the rapidly pooling blood. I can’t think straight when there’s this much blood. It’s hard to even tell where the worse part of the wound is. “What did you do?” I mumble, more to myself than anything, my voice soft and shockingly fearful. “He was going to kill me. I had to defend myself,” the Duke answers. “I get that!” I snap. It doesn't make me feel any calmer though. “What exactly did you do?” tearing my eyes from my mate’s blood-soaked belly to glare at the Duke. Surprisingly, he does look regretful. He also answers immediately. “I shifted my claws and tried to shove him

**** Alyssa **** Leaping from the car before it's even fully stopped, I rush into the arms of my waiting friend. "Veronica, what the heck are you doing here?" I exclaim. "Long story short!? After you left, Jamie, Alpha Enzi, and a few others came looking for you in our pack. Your uncle dragged all your friends in for questioning, thinking you must have told one of us where you were headed. It turned out Jamie is my mate. We have a lot to catch up on. But first, what happened here?" Veronica points to the cars behind me. Turning, I see Doctor Dan directing Jayvon and the others while they load Enzi on a stretcher. "It's complicated, but he'll be ok. He just needs rest to heal." I answer with a shrug because the last thing I want to do is to explain all of this. My head is still struggling to make sense of it. "Luna, I'm so glad you're home," Merideth squeals, flinging herself into my arms next, "Girl, we have so much to talk about! I can't believe you didn't tell me you were the L

**** Alyssa **** "Good morning! I knew you were awake!" Merideth squeals with way too much excitement. Instantly, I'm smacked with déjà vu and that failed shopping trip so many years ago. "He's always up early," Merideth says as she winks at Enzi, who responds with a noncommittal grunt. I can sense he's displeased at her interruption, but surprisingly, he doesn't kick her out. That could be because she thrusts an oversized coffee mug in his hand before she continues babbling on. "Did you sleep at all? You have massive black bags under your eyes!" Merideth says, softly gripping my chin and staring intently at my face. Far out, this is a lot for first thing in the morning. I glance at the man behind Merideth, who wordlessly mouths the word "sorry" to Enzi and me. The sheepish look on his face makes me smile. "She looks beautiful," Enzi whispers. "Suck up," Merideth groans, and I laugh out loud at that. "He's your mate?" I blurt out, pointing to the Enzi look-a-like with a tip on m

**** Alyssa **** "Alyssa? Is it really you? I heard you were missing. Where have you been? What happened? The news said you are the missing Princess. Is that true?" "Goddess, Melody, those are a lot of questions! Let's see.. Yes, it's really me. I have yet to learn about the Princess thing as I'm not ready to talk to them just yet. I ran away from my husband, who turned out to be my fated mate, and he's actually why I'm calling you. I was hoping to get some advice, and I think you are the perfect person to talk about my feelings with, if you don't mind?" "Of course, sweetie. I don't mind! You and your family were there for me when I needed you the most. It worked out well in the end, but I was a mess at first, and without you and your parents in my corner, I don't know where I'd be right now. So shoot, sweetie, I'm all ears," I recount my story for what feels like hours, sparing nothing. Melody oohs, ahhs and cusses in all the right places as she listened intently and occasionally
