Chapter Thirty: Caution
Morax Pov. The door creaked forward on its hinges, and despite my best efforts to avoid their crooked dispositions, I was face to face with the council. The room was deathly quiet as I made my approach. It seemed whatever they were talking about in hushed voices was no longer necessary now that I had arrived. With a scowl, I took my designated seat at the elongated table. The Alpha of the Clearwater Pack was drilling a hole into the side of my face. He was a hot-headed fool and I could feel the accusatory stare from a mile away. But I knew he wouldn't mention his true issue. He wasn't quite that stupid. As if he had proof his little "gift" had been from me. I always covered my tracks. "Nice of you to join us, Morax." He sneered. On a better occasion, I would have ignored him. But as it turned out, I wasn't in the mood to be the bigger person. "Hello, Richard. How's your clan doing? I'm sure they're flourishing well under your leadership, aren't they?" I asked flippantly, kn

Chapter Thirty-One: Waking Up
"There, you should be all set to move around now."The nurse's skilled hands wrapped a bandage around my shoulder to my elbow, creating a snug sling. Carefully I rotated my shoulder, pleasantly surprised to feel it didn't sting. The movement still felt restricted but it was nothing like before. That wolf really did a number on me.I placed my hands flat against the bed, pushing off to wobble to a stand. Being on my feet made my legs feel like jelly, but it was much better than staying cooped in bed. "I feel so much better... thank you?" I paused, waiting for her name. I couldn't remember if I heard it or if she ever told me. The small medic bowed her head, a pleasant smile on her face. "It's no trouble at all, we're family after all. We watch out for each other." She informed me with a small smile, and it warmed my chest. It was... exactly what I had wanted from the Copse Pack. Chillingly, the memory of my father's foot connecting with my throat popped into my head. I shuddered, g

Chapter Thirty-Two: Orders
"Hm..." Those eyes seemed to search my very soul as he hummed. And I waited for his answer with a bated breath."Maybe you're not as useless as you look." His sneer caught me off guard, and I almost slipped on a wooden plank on the roof."What the hell kind of answer is that?" I scowled, picking up the pace so I was closer to his retreating form. Miqella was staring straight ahead again. The bridge of his nose was high and confident as he glided through the air. He made it hard to figure out what his problem was. Since the moment we met, it was pretty clear he wasn't my greatest fan. But I had never seen him before in my life, so what could he possibly hate me for? Was my hair the wrong shade of blonde or something? As the thought crossed my mind, I found that believing he could be that petty came easily to me. I could picture it. "Hello? Earth to the scentless boy, that didn't answer my question!" I obnoxiously waved my good arm at him, keeping the other snug in its sling. "Wha

Chapter Thirty-Three: Reunion
The pain in my lower back was harsh, and I realized pretty quickly I wasn't as resilient as before. The fall hurt. Much more than I thought it would. With a groan, I lifted up onto my palms. It was hard to see in the small beams of light that came from the ceiling, but I knew which way the door was. With a push, it came into view. "You can't just throw me in here! I didn't do anything!" I yelled as loud as I could. I was sitting on the floor now, banging my hands off the door. I couldn't tell if Miqella was still out there or not, but I wouldn't stop making a racket until he bothered to hear me out. My fist thundered on the door, again and again, anger surging in my veins. "Let me out, Miqella!" I yelled again, but this time, a sharp gasp was heard to my right. I paused. My dulled senses registered I wasn't alone in the room. Afraid to look behind me, I took a ginger sniff of the air and froze. Could it really be? I didn't have time to gather my thoughts and feelings, becaus

Chapter Thirty-Four: Oath
"You're the one who saved him?" My eyes widened, and I stared unabashedly at the man. My lashes fluttered at his blank expression. "When the fire broke out, how did you save him in time...did Morax already know about the attack?"Miqella glanced at me, but I couldn't tell what his feelings were. He was elusive in his emotional capacity just like Morax, if not worse. "Morax knew when the fire broke out because of me. He was off handling a threat with Escha when I signaled him. If we had both been present, I'm sure the attack would have turned out very differently." He said the last words with a hint of bitterness, frowning. It seemed the fire even bothered him, the sharp stick boy. I was surprised. But maybe I shouldn't have been, just because he didn't like me, it didn't mean he didn't love his pack. "I'm sure things would have been different...but either way, I'm grateful you were home." Crimson eyes slid to my face, and I paused as they rested there. I was tempted to ask if I

Chapter Thirty-Five: Recognition
"Are you ready to go now, sleepy heads?" It was comical to see Elijah sit up with leaves stuck in his matted locks. He was looking around through blurry optics, stretching his lanky and awkward limbs. On the contrary, Miqella was ( to my chagrin ) impeccable as he rose from his slumber. Both glanced at me, much more alert than before. I was standing near the edge of the forest line, berries nestled in a makeshift basket. It was crafted from my jacket being flipped upside down, but for now, it would do. I came over with the bundle of blackberries, while Elijah looked over at me curiously. "Hey, what do you have there? It smells... sweet." He asked with a tentative sniff. The distinct sound of his stomach rumbling gave away his hunger, and Elijah didn't even look embarrassed as he shot to his feet. He met me halfway, and I watched his eyes light up in delight as he took in the sight of the fruit.I was lucky they grew in the groves not too far from here, gathering them had been easy

Chapter Thirty-Six: Little Timmy Haynes
The spat between me and my brother slid to a standstill, and I heard his noise of confusion as all of my attention became focused on Timmy. His bare feet were sunk into the mud of the river bank, his large brown eyes so wide they looked like they'd pop out of his head. He looked more like an eerie children's toy than a person right now. He was staring, unmoving. I could barely tell if he was breathing. Did no one tell him I survived? No, that couldn't be it. I couldn't see Camille being that cruel after she explicitly mentioned taking care of him. But as he stood there, his skin pale as moonlight, my pulse was pounding in my ears. What was wrong with him? "Timmy? What's wrong? Are you okay?" I asked again as I started to move closer. It was hard to navigate over the sloshes of mud, the traction of my boots sinking into the wet terrain. Still, the grip managed to push me forward inside of stalling. Timmy finally looked up at me, but his eyes were wild. I could barely keep up with

Chapter Thirty-Seven: Little Timmy Haynes ( 2 )
Timmy wriggled straight out of my arms, and I fumbled to gain my balance. His screams were echoing inside my head."What...did you just say?" Bile was rising in the back of my throat and even though I knew what he was saying, I couldn't bring myself to comprehend it. I took a step back, but Timmy's wounded face froze me as if I had shot him. "He smells'a just like my dad! That's my daddy's blood all of over him!" Timmy pointed directly at Elijah, his eyes fierce and colder than I had ever seen them. It didn't look right on his innocent face, the one I had come to cherish. "It's his fault my momma won't stop crying! She don't love me anymore Missy, and it's all his fault for taking daddy away! She won't a talk to me at all, all she does is cry!" As his hysteric yells grew bolder, so did his tears. His hands formed fists into his shirt, it looked like he was trying to tug his own heart out with its placement. Elijah had done this. The faraway truth I had accepted about my brother

Chapter Thirty-Eight: Olive Branch
"Stop looking at me like I'm going to eat you." The air in the room was frigid, artic as if winter had rolled around in the middle of summer. I wasn't sure which one to look at--Morax or my brother. But as the Alpha eyed Elijah with contempt, and he returned the stare, I began to bounce my leg. Anxious energy crackling under the surface. It had been more than a few minutes now since we had settled inside his cabin, but the room was already filled to the brim with tension. I had taken a seat on Morax's plush sofa, but Elijah had opted to sit on the floor like a disgruntled toddler. Meanwhile, the Alpha hadn't sat at all. He was merely standing, towering over us. I couldn't tell if he was trying to intimidate us or not, but if he was, it was working. He looked so angry. "I'm sorry, I guess it's hard not to stare at the Alpha of a bloodthirsty clan like he's some apex predator." Elijah huffed, stubbornness painted on the ridge of his nose and on the edges of his jutted chin. I w

Chapter Thirty-Nine: My Choice
My hand came gingerly to rest over my chest. Alpha Morax was silent, watching my movements. I took a deep breath. "I can't speak for Elijah, but... I want to stay here." Alpha Morax looked taken aback, but for me, the answer was simple. Even though the truth behind Timmy had come out, it only made me feel like he needed my support that much more. And after everything that had happened, it wasn't like we had anywhere else to go. There was no telling where else our father had attacked, which clans could be trusted or not. And even the idea of other sections of his pack felt unappealing, while Morax would still be a part of them, Timmy and him would be here, in the center. Another attack could happen at any time, and being ignorant on the sidelines wasn't what I wanted. I wanted to know the truth. Behind my father's actions, the artifacts. And as my gaze swept over Morax's rigid features and strong jawline, I realized I wanted to know what made the Alpha tick too. I nodded, reaffir
