Chapter 20: Moving Forward Together
"Isabella, don't get me wrong. I'm not acting this way because of the mark," he cut me off. Then, he breathed out as if he was trying to calm himself down before continuing, "I genuinely care for you...I don't know what this is, but I need you by my side."My tears suddenly stopped flowing and I stared at him, my mouth agape and my confession stuck at the tip of my tongue. All I managed to do was stupidly choke on my tears before mumbling, "What?"Dylan seemed to get more and more anxious by the second. He ran his fingers through his hair out of nervousness as he started to subtly hop from one foot to another. "I don't know when or how. I just...""You just?" I urged him when he trailed off mid-sentence. My heart was beating dangerously fa

Chapter 21: Setting Out
"This is why it's important to wear socks," Dylan said with a lighthearted chuckle as he carefully applied some soothing cream on the sores on my feet. They were blisters, he said. And apparently, it was caused by the hours of walking without socks on. "Ow," I grumbled, pulling my foot back. He held my ankle tighter and continued to apply the cream. I've never had blisters before, perhaps because I'm used to walking barefoot. When Dylan was done, he slowly slipped on a pair of black socks that he took from his backpack. They were quite big for me, but I was too grateful to point that out. "We need to start moving," he said. He seemed unaware that he was massaging my calves. "Do you think you can manage?" "I think so." We spent one more night in the motel. Dylan told me that he was planning that we stay there for a week at least, but when he looked out the window this morning, he found a few wanted posters pasted on the lampposts. So soon enough, his pack would be combing this par

Chapter 22: A Gruesome Sight
"Isabella," he whispered in a low voice. "It's not that far from here. I smell corpses...a lot of them." Immediately, my body began to shake in fear and dread. I wanted to know more yet was tempted to just walk away at the same time. But I couldn't possibly shake off my gut feeling. I knew then that I wouldn't be able to leave without thinking about this. Dylan turned to me and held me by the shoulders. He looked at me, boring his eyes deep into mine. The panic in his face told me that he knew what I was thinking.  "We should go. It's dangerous." "No," I shook my head. "I can't just...go."

Chapter 23: The Dark-Haired Wolf
Dylan and I hopped onto a bus that would take us outside the city. I spritzed on the last few drops of my pheromone cologne and hid my ugly swollen eyes with a hat that painfully bore a ridiculous slogan of a certain appetite suppressant candy. With my thin figure, I wouldn't be surprised if some she-wolves would stop by to ask how long it took the product to work for me. I looked stupid. But half an hour into the ride, the dumb slogan was the least of my worries."Dylan," I called out whilst anxiously grabbing the sleeve of his sweatshirt. I sat up straight in my seat to take a clearer glance at the street. Cold sweat began to run down the sides of my face. "What are we gonna do?"The road, according to the map we had, was one of the few

Then, he transformed right in front of me.I heard his bones break and his clothes rip. His golden eyes glowed brighter than ever. And the next thing I knew, from where Dylan was stood a majestic black wolf. From where I was, I saw traces of the same scars on his torso that I admired so much. If I wasn't feeling so weak and tired, I would've mindlessly and carelessly reached out an arm to touch them like I always did. "Dylan..."I knew he heard me from the way his ears flinched, but he kept his eyes glued onto the military men who seemed to suddenly hesitate going after us. The crowd panicked even more, but they were now running away while circling around u

Chapter 25: Isabella Hayes
"Does it hurt?" I smiled reassuringly in response. Apparently, while I was unconscious, Dylan managed to get away and take out the bullet stuck in my wound. And for the past five minutes, he has been switching out my bandages. He kept asking me if I was okay even though we both knew that he was in worse shape than I was. "I'm fine," I said, eyeing the specks of dried blood in his nails that he wasn't able to wash off. "I know it's a bit too late, but thank you for saving me back there." His hands stopped for a moment. Then, he looked at me with a small smile. "That was nothing. I'd do more for you, Isabella." My cheeks immediately warmed up. I didn't wanna admit that his way with words made me react like that so I looked away to hide them. But it wasn't like he was going to notice them anyway since, in the run-down abandoned cottage that we found in the middle of the forest, we had no source of light except the moonlight streaming through the trees. It was a good thing that the cot

Chapter 26: A Budding Romance
"I love you, Dylan."He only managed to pull away a little to look at me before he froze in shock at the moment the words escaped my lips. I understood his reaction since I was even shocked myself. I kind of blurted it out mindlessly, although I do mean every word. I would've preferred to say it in a more romantic setting, but here I was. The embarrassment sunk in a little too late, so after quite a long and intense staredown with a surprised Dylan, I hurriedly moved to bury my face into the crook of his neck, hiding the redness in my cheeks. "What?""I know you heard me," I replied, albeit it was more like a whimper rather than a proper answer. "Don't make me say it again.""But I do want you to say it again."Thankfully, he didn't force me to look at him, most likely sensing that I was too shy to make eye contact. Instead, he planted a kiss on my temple while brushing his fingers through my hair gently. If I wasn't so nervous at the moment, I would've been tempted to fall asleep at

Chapter 27: The Red-Eyed Werewolf is a Doctor
"Enzo Bennet," I mumbled, taking a step back and stretching out my arms in a protective stance over Dylan. The act was useless, though, as we all knew that I was a mere flimsy cardboard next to another werewolf. "How did you find me?"He chuckled before fishing out something out from his pocket. It was another vial of pheromone cologne. "The bottle," he said while waving it. His grin only got wider by the second, leaving me sweating cold buckets out of anxiety. "I planted a tracking device in yours. Did you really think I trust you enough to let you go outside unmonitored?"I remembered the empty vial in my duffle bag and mentally cursed for deciding to keep it even after consuming all its contents. I was panicking and certain that my face said it all. I could hear Dylan wheezing behind me.Forcing myself to keep a clear head, I realized that if what Enzo wanted was to get rid of Dylan, he would've been perfectly capable of doing so when we were sleeping. But he didn't. He even bothe

Chapter 28: Back on Track
I sighed once Enzo disappeared through the crumbling doorway, his hand relentlessly waving over his shoulder in a crude farewell. Then, I pushed myself onto my feet to walk towards our baggage that has been chucked into one corner in a hurry earlier to fish out the now-empty vial of pheromone cologne. It was so small that it fits conveniently into my palm which was probably why I never really considered the possibility that it was bugged. I held it up at eye level for a closer inspection. Nothing. Then the thought hit me. I unscrewed the cork stopper and after much struggle, surprisingly managed to take it apart with my hands, revealing a small almost capsule-like device inside that flickered with a red light. "Dammit", I cursed under my breath before throwing the empty bottle, tracking device, and bits of cork out the window both for good measure and out of frustration. It was a mistake that I hadn't been wary of Enzo and those rebels just because they showed me a little kindness.

Chapter 29: With You by the River Pt. 1
"So come here," he said with a smile, patting the space in between his legs. "I want to hold you." I stood up but instead of doing as I was told, I loomed over him with my hands on my waist. Tilting my head, I remarked, "Rather than that, don't you want to take a dip in the river?" "Do I smell that bad?" Frowning, he pushed himself to his feet while raising an arm to smell his armpits. I laughed at him before walking over back to our baggage, grabbing some towels, and then walking out of the cottage with my arm linked with his. It was warm and sunny enough for a swim so I thought it would be a good idea. We walked side by side. Excited, I would often gleefully jump over exposed tree roots or kick a bunch of dried leaves on the forest floor, sending them flying over us like confetti. Dylan repeatedly reminded me to be more careful so that I wouldn't slip. I would feel like a child being reprimanded by a parent each time. I didn't think that children would listen so I pretty much pla
