40: Love and responsibility
I returned to our chambers and found her things untouched, which meant she had not been here to take any of them. She had run away just like she did eight years ago, only this time, I made her leave.I lied to her, avoided the truth and broke her heart in the end.I had sent out guards to search for her also and I went ahead with a carriage, but we couldn’t find her. After many hours of searching for her, I returned to the Palace. I felt Kailani must have returned to Lurds, but I couldn’t guarantee that was true. I needed a guarantee. That something bad hadn’t happened to her. This was all my fault. She could be in danger for all I know, and I pushed her into that danger. The voices in my head were surging higher and driving me crazier with their nagging and guilt. I needed Kailani; I needed the peace she brought me.I stepped back into the hall, and this time found Xavier with queen Mia waiting for me. I wondered if they had gotten rest after the party or if I had also stolen their p

41: Cruelty of sacrifice
Xavier’s words were comforting. Knowing he’d be on my side and root for my decision made me feel happy, yet I couldn’t sleep as I went to bed. I couldn’t stop thinking about Kailani or where she could be. I hoped and prayed she was safe and, though my guilt lingered, I knew I wouldn’t be able to find her. I missed her. It had been less than a day, but I missed her. Her laughter, her silly and witty remarks, her voice. I missed staring at her and getting lost in her eyes. I missed the smile and the way she said my name. I missed everything about her. The ray of sun flickered over my face and my eyes opened to see the dawning of the day. I needed to start my day with a clear head and after my meditation; I started getting ready. I marched downstairs and found Xavier and Mia at the dining table, about to have breakfast. Their heads lifted to acknowledge my presence. “You look like shit. Did you even get any sleep last night?” Xavier raised a brow. “A few hours. Thanks for caring.

42: Peace
Kailani’s POV I stayed curled up in the ball on the bed and I’ve remained this way for the last three days of my return from the capital. It did not surprise me that the prince didn’t come after me, or send words. I took it as his way of moving on with lady Shewa, whom he referred to as his childhood friend. It hurt because that wasn’t the Edward I knew, or maybe this was the real Edward and the one I knew was a lie. They would have much in common and she’d be a much better mate than I’ll ever be. She had the name, the grace and confidence, and I could tell she didn’t have a tainted past as I did. I would settle for my life as it was and make the most of it. It would take time to get over him, that was for sure, but I would get over him in time. My door cracked open as Jane stepped in. “Should I bring you dinner in bed?” “I’m not hungry,” I mumbled and sniffed. “You have said that in the last three days. You’re going to break down without meat in your system, Ani.” That was the

43: The space between the truth
I stayed silent, wanting him to continue, and he did. “Over a year ago, my brother sent me to the north with a message for Alpha Koz, the alpha of truth and knowledge, and on my way back from the North, I saw you. It had been five years since my encounter with you then and a lot had changed since then in my life, yet I recognized you and I felt something I never felt in a long while.”I remember visiting the north because I received word about a child I had searched for a few years earlier. She was being held as a prisoner and I negotiated a release. I could not help her because she was sold to the slave traders before my arrival. I returned to Lurds sad, knowing what awaited her. I didn’t know Edward had seen me then. “There I made it my mission to find you and when I did, I knew I had to have you. My whole being yearned for you despite my better judgement. You felt real and gave peace to my never-ending chaotic mind and silenced the voice in my head. No one had ever done that.”“Y

44: Control
“Take off your clothes, Edward,” I said with a very firm voice, despite how nervous I felt. He obeys, grabbing his coat and shrugging it off his shoulder. He yanked his shirt off and tossed it and the floor, leaving him naked from the waist up. My eyes followed every movement, anticipating and not wanting to miss anything, and it became an uncontainable desire. I undressed as well, getting rid of the dress I had on. His hand quickly undid his trousers, and they dropped off, leaving him naked before me, hard and delicious. I closed the space between us and my lips locked on his, my body pressed against his, feeling him throb against my stomach from need. This fuelled my want for him and knowing I could do whatever I wanted to do to him felt oddly empowering. I place my hands on his shoulders and trailed my touch over his inked arms. He has spoken about how he got his many scars. He had pushed boundaries past the point that he should. He had never let me touch them and had always caug

45: Love well deserved
Third POV Kailani lay in bed with her eyes fixed on the ceiling, thinking about everything that had happened in the last few hours. Edward came back to her because he wanted to be with her. He was hers and she was his and there was no running or changing that now. She loved him more than anything else in the world, and she knew he loved her. She saw it in his eyes a few times and, hearing him admit it last night, confirmed it. She felt a little proud that he wanted to be with her, but also selfish because if he told the truth last night, it meant there was a war coming and the prince was choosing her over doing what was necessary for the survival of the people. Being a royal came at a high cost, putting the needs and safety of the people before yours. She had never known the prince to be selfish. Last night, she became his selfish choice. Many questions lingered. His father, the Alpha of alphas, did not want her for his son. He had a better choice of a mate for Edward. A noble-born

46: Forbidden union
Kailani wasn’t one to go to the temple on a good day, but she felt the urge to. She wanted to pray for the safekeeping of the prince and the man that owned her heart. Rue told her praying at the temple worked and she took her word for it. The full moon was a week days ago, and it was the happiest she had ever been while shifting. Edward saw it too, and he told her it made him happy as well. She was happy with him, happier than she had ever been, and that scared her. It’s been two months since Edward returned to her and it had been a happy tale since then. She knew he would never do a thing to hurt her, but she could feel hurt and pain lay ahead. His departure for the capital a few days ago gave her the time and space to think about what she wanted and he was what she wanted. She didn’t ignore the many reasons that served as barriers to their union and despite Edward stubbornly ignoring them; they existed. She didn’t want to ruin his reputation or relationship with his family, especial

47: Guilt and blames
Edward pushed open the door to the living area of Kailani’s room and he found a few bags packed that belonged to Kailani. The living area was almost empty now, and he wondered what was making her want to leave. He barely had the thoughts out of his head when Kailani stepped out with the last bag, which was a little smaller than the other two in the living area. Edward had looked forward to seeing this face for the past few days but never got to. The closest he got was from dream walking, and even he knew it wasn’t real. He had longed to see her again, but he didn’t think he’d see her in this state. He wondered what had happened in his absence that could have triggered her need to leave, even though she didn’t disclose that the last time he saw her. There had to be a reason for this, but whatever the reason, he wasn’t happy about it. She slowed down as she saw him, and their eyes met. “Kailani.” “My Prince,” she replied in a low tone, unable to hold his gaze. There it was, the titl

48: No barriers
She turned to him, looking confused, as she tried to read his expression but failed miserably. “I am not your peace. I am your chaos. The awful choice you should never have made.” “That’s what you say.” “It’s the truth.” He took a bold step toward her, “The truth is for everyday in the past seven years I’ve woken up with voices in my head driving me insane, for six years I’ve put up a wall in my mind to block the voices out and those walls crashed every time I shifted. I’ve searched for the cure of my misery through magic and pushing further boundaries, but found no solution. Not until I met you, and that’s the truth.” “I don’t understand.” “You have the ability to silent all the voices in my head.” He had spoken about voices in his head for the longest of time, but she never placed a keen mind on it. She assumed it was the type of voice everyone, including herself, had in their head, but he seems to mean a different one. “What voices?” her brows narrowed at him. “The ones I set

49: The enemy
Kailani got down from her carriage and approached the parlour when she noticed Jane standing at the entrance with a scroll in her hand and a worried look on her face. Her eyes narrowed at her as she approached, but Jane didn’t notice her presence yet and kept looking around instead. She got to her and placed a hand on her shoulder, making her jump on her stand. She twirled around and found Kailani, and the fear faded away. Ever since Kailani took a step back from the parlour, she had stopped coming as early as she used to. She took a step back because Edward had asked for her hand and when she said yes; he moved to propose a wedding ceremony and that had taken her time and focus. They were sceptical about the venue because they wanted to avoid the alpha of alphas whom Edward refused to invite, but also wanted the king's presence. Kailani voiced her insecurities about the capital and so they decided to have a small wedding in Lurds. She was happy with the turnout of things, but stil
