Chapter 20
Leah A quick glance over my shoulder tells me that Rex and Cooper are busy with their three injured friends. Danny presses his fingers to his side tentatively. Nasty gashes and bite marks mar his skin. He winces as they come away covered in bright red blood as I watch, and guilt ties my stomach in knots. The poor guy. I can’t believe they did that to one of their own. He was just trying to protect me. Cooper eyes Hayley with frustration, still not happy with her for stomping her way through the trees toward us a few minutes ago. How dangerous are these people? I need to talk to Hayley alone. Is she safe here? I’m not leaving her until I know what’s going on, that’s for sure. Picking up the pace, I put a bit of distance between us and Rex and Cooper, who are helping to half carry the injured back to the packhouse. I catch Rex glancing in my direction and our gazes lock for a second before I look away. I’m furious with him for suggesting it’s my fault that I almost got savaged by a p

Chapter 21
Rex Leah interrogates me the entire drive home. Somehow, it’s easier to rattle off all the information she wants without looking at her. I’m afraid if I do, I’ll see disgust there, and I don’t think I’d be able to handle that. Were you born a werewolf? Is Hayley the queen now? How many wolves live in the pack? Can you turn people into wolves? Can you only shift on the full moon? She asks a never-ending stream of questions, getting progressively more and more detailed, which I am more than happy to answer if it puts her at ease. I had been planning on telling her everything anyway… but the way she found out? Goddess, it couldn’t have been worse. It’s like a dagger to my heart when I remember the sight of her trembling in fear from John. Leah eventually falls silent as we pull up in front of the house. As I pull the keys from the ignition, the tension is so thick you could cut it with a knife. Neither of us moves to get out. “I’m so sorry, Leah. I was going to tell Cooper tonight t

Chapter 22
Leah Where on earth did that come from? My plan had been to sit him down and find out exactly what the story was between him and this mysterious ex of his, not to jump him. I literally threw myself at Rex. Looking at his slightly bewildered face, it was totally worth it. He looks as stunned as I do. It was frantic and wild, completely uninhibited. I glance around us and can’t help but laugh, leaning forward to press my forehead against his chest at what we must look like. We’re on the floor, wedged between the sofa and the coffee table, cushions and magazines knocked all over the floor around us. Rex stretches his long legs out in front of him and sits back, leaning on his arms. His fly is open and his t-shirt is flung God only knows where. His face is flushed, and his tanned chest is still heaving, abs damp with perspiration and flexing with each deep breath. I’m in a bra and shorts, perched on top of him, curls sticking up everywhere from where his hands tugged them, and held me

Chapter 23
Rex Swiping my thumb across the screen to answer, I wait, not speaking, to see what she has to say. It’s been more than a year since I heard her voice. When we locked eyes across the room at the alpha’s conference, I thought she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Stunning auburn hair and creamy skin made her stand out in the crowd. Tall and willowy, with sharp green eyes and perfect manners, I thought the moon goddess had blessed me with the ideal mate to smooth out my rougher edges. Looking back now, though, I see things differently. There were signs something was amiss early on. I was just too lovestruck to notice them. First, Stacey was reluctant to meet my family, claiming she was overwhelmed. And then, I can still picture how she pursed her lips when I told her where I was from. She was clearly disappointed that I wasn’t from some big city or a more high-profile pack. The Jones’ are wealthy, but we’re not flashy. She probably assumed we were just scraping by. I had

Chapter 24
Rex Nathan and Ethan are playing pool when I arrive back at the packhouse. I’m tempted to just blow past them and head straight to my room, but when Ethan calls me over, given he helped us out today doing collections, I can’t be rude. “How did the first day go?” he asks cheerfully, leaning over the green felt and lining up his next shot carefully. I perch on the edge of a large tan leather armchair beside them and sigh, not sure how to answer that. “The camp went well. The girls have been great, no moaning, just happy to be together and having a laugh. They’re going to be sore tomorrow, though. Thanks for helping us out.” I really am thrilled at how that part went. They enjoyed the hike. The trail we took was manageable for everyone with enough viewing points and stops to keep it interesting. We covered off some basic navigational skills that they’ll be able to use in the orienteering challenge at the end of the week. Everything ran like clockwork thanks to Leah’s insane organisati

Chapter 25
Leah Despite the cheerful expression I’m have painted my face, I’m exhausted. It turns out that going to bed angry and horny isn’t a recipe for a great night’s sleep. I groan and bang my head against the cupboard door, blushing when I think of how I behaved last night. My plan was to be dignified when he came back, and to pull him aside this morning for an adult conversation when nobody was around. But something about Rex just makes me act nuts. I can’t seem to control myself. The second I saw him coming toward me, looking all growly and intense, red-hot rage flashed through me. How dare he look at me like that when he picked her over me? And let’s be clear, when he left me alone to take the call, without an apology or explanation, that was the decision he made. Maybe it’s childish to think like that, but that’s how I felt, and it hurts more than I care to admit. The quiet murmur of a deep voice reaches me in the pantry, and I know immediately by my traitorous body’s reaction that

Chapter 26
Rex I messed up. I know what it’s like to feel unwanted better than anyone else. My chat with Leah three days ago has strengthened my resolve to sort out this mess with Stacey once and for all. I’ll honour her decision to put our relationship on hold until I’m officially free of the bond, but that doesn’t mean I’m loving it. Or that I can’t prove to her how good we’d be together in the meantime. We’ve been circling each other, working in tandem and operating like a well-oiled machine, but the urge to go to her is strong. Every morning when I see her cheery face and hear her bright laughter, I just want to drag her into that pantry and kiss her. No matter what ungodly hour of the morning we start at. Every time our eyes meet, it’s like a current of electricity passes between us and it’s getting out of control. When we’re in the same room, I swear my fingers tingle with the need to touch her. Our connection is getting stronger. Leah climbs out of the back of the speedboat as we bring

Chapter 27
Leah Rex is being weird. From the second Zoe and I walked into the aptly named Grey Wolf Brewery, he has been watching me. It’s intense, it’s hot, and it’s making me flustered. I’m struggling to remember why I decided we couldn’t fool around. “So, I take it things have progressed beyond staring matches in the kitchen between you and Mister Tall, Dark, and Broody? Or is this round two?” Zoe teases as she glances over to Rex, who lifts his gaze to mine, and those sexy hazel eyes of his flash green. Holy Moly. Whenever I get a glimpse of his wolf pushing forward, I feel like my underwear will spontaneously combust. Crossing my legs to ease the ache does nothing. I can feel myself getting wet, and from the fire in Rex’s eyes, he knows it. “Sorry?” I ask, completely zoning out. “Oh, well, yes, but we’re putting a pin in it with the whole working together thing.” I feel bad for lying to Zoe, but I can’t exactly say that even though we’re eye-fucking across the bar, I told him no more nook

Chapter 28
Leah “We did it!” I exclaim, turning to Rex with a giant smile on my face. I can’t believe we got through our first week with no injuries and no disasters. Everyone left happy and smiling, if a little hungover from our night at the brewery. Rex smiles indulgently at me from his perch on the edge of the picnic table. His long legs are spread wide in front of him, hands clasped together, and elbows resting on his knees. He exudes confidence, as if the fact that it would all go so swimmingly was never in doubt. He snags my hand and pulls me closer to stand between his legs. I flush as a vivid image of the way he pinned me to the tree flashes into my mind. Rex fixes me with those hazel eyes, and his voice comes out all gruff and gravelly. “Baby, you need to stop whatever you’re thinking about,” he growls, making a point of inhaling deeply, and I blush even more. That sense of smell is killing me. I can’t get away with anything. “You’re right, we have work to do,” I state, stepping bac

Chapter 29
Rex “Fine. But we have new guests coming tomorrow, shifters. I can’t leave until I have cover arranged. Let me get back to you,” I grit out. I’m furious that she’s forcing my hand. The last thing I need right now is to leave Grey Ridge and Leah, with six male shifters arriving tomorrow. All the activities planned for their visitors need to be led by me. I can’t dump them on Ethan or Nathan, either. They’ve been helpful, but they have full-time jobs to do, and I certainly can’t leave Leah to handle them on their own. Just the idea of her being alone with them makes me seethe with jealousy. They are arriving from our neighbouring packs, a test of sorts by Alpha Steel to see if his region should run more advanced training for more members of the packs to develop relationships and allegiances beyond just the Alphas. “I’ll be waiting. And Rex, I can’t wait to see you again,” she whispers like we’re long-lost lovers reuniting after being forced apart by some terrible set of circumstances.
