Chapter 21: Drunken Mistakes
A waiter brings me a glass of wine as I take my seat. I look at James, who is sipping on a glass of bourbon. In the human communities, they have what we call watered-down alcohol. Their alcohol has no effect on us, no matter how fast we drink. Our metabolism does not allow us to build up the blood alcohol level in our systems.Enter our own version of alcohol, the same thing the humans have, just a hundred proof and somehow filtered to perfect to still be smooth and tasty. I have only ever had it once. When Enzo and I finished our training and set out on our way here. It ended terribly. I ended up throwing up all night, cuddling with Enzo’s wolf for warmth.I take a few sips, then a tall, thin man approaches James. His eyes skirt over me lustfully and instantly I wrap my free arm over my stomach and avert my eyes.“Dorian is still nowhere to be seen.” Then a salad lands in front of me and I look up, surprised at the waitress, who gives me a sheepish smile.“The alpha pre-ordered all y

Chapter 22: Missing
~Enzo POV~I scowl at Ivy’s bedroom window from the cover of the bushes, hating that I can’t be up there. The only thing I hate more right now is that I let her kiss me for as long as I did two days ago. My pathetic, weak heart didn’t need a reminder of how perfect she felt against me and now here I am waiting out her window for her to give me something. It’s been complete radio silence since she walked in that front door. Two days of not seeing or hearing from her. If I didn’t think she could handle herself, I’d be more worried. Instead, I will sit out here and wait for the moment she faces me and that kiss she started. It has been haunting me for too long. I know she was drunk on whatever werewolf-proof wine she had at dinner that night, but she wouldn’t have kissed me unless she wanted to. Unless she thought I was James, maybe? But if she did, that just proves she is in over her head. I know she is deviating from the plan. She is developing feelings for our target’s son. All the

Chapter 23: Finding Ivy
“What do you mean, she is missing? Didn’t you just say she was waiting for you in your bed?” I ask James, confused.“Clearly she wasn’t.”“When was the last time you saw her?” I ask.“Two nights ago. We went on our date and it was ruined. I went to her room after I got back and spent the night with her. But I had to leave for a meeting and I got back this morning. Sarah said Ivy left after I did, but never came back.”My stomach burns and bile tries to claw its way up. A steady dose of both jealousy and fear prickles up my neck. I fucking hate how he said he spent the night with her, but what sticks out in my mind the most is the latest cryptic letter. ‘Hard to protect her if she isn’t on pack lands’. Fucking hell. I stuff my feet in my shoes. “She didn’t tell Sarah where she was going?” I ask, standing, then rushing out the door and reaching back to close it behind us.“No,” he shakes his head. “Sarah said she just left the house and ignored her on the way out.”“Did you have any ru

Chapter 24: Reunited
~Ivy POV~Okay, now that I am back on the pack grounds and I have two very pissed-off men stalking toward me, I am realizing maybe taking off was a terrible idea. It is a little empowering to know that I can get them so worried, though. Well, Enzo is always worried, but James… Maybe he really is my mate? Why would he lie about that if he has nothing to gain from it?“Hey,” I say in as cherry of a voice as I can muster, hoping to hide the iota of fear that’s settling in my sternum.“Hey? That’s what you want to say right now?” James raises a brow as he practically plows me over, wrapping me in his arms and raising me up. I let out a surprised squeal and wrap my arm around his neck, holding him tight.“I’m sorry! I wanted to surprise you by trying to get my initiation jobs in so I can join the pack sooner. My birthday isn’t too far away.” I grin at him, but I can feel the cool gaze of Enzo’s eyes, tracing my every move. I make the terrible mistake of quickly glancing in his direction an

Chapter 25: Getting closer
“James…?” I whisper innocently and he presses his forehead against mine, rolling his hip into me as he squeezes my ass and I freeze. Sensations I have never experienced before zip through my body and cloud my brain, making me think maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to just go a little further than I have before… “You make me crazy,” he murmurs, his hot breath dancing along my flesh. “Mate with me now, Ivy. Fuck everything else. Let’s just lock the door and stay here for days.” Every single part of me wakes up from whatever trance I was in and I untangle my fingers from the hair I hadn’t known I weaved them in. “What is really going on?” I ask him and he releases me. His head droops low, then grabs his shoes. “There was another disappearance. Then reappearance,” He says with a frown, looking up at me as he ties his shoes. “What does that mean?” I ask and he sighs. “There was another murder. And I have yet to disclose who all are dead or who all are just missing.” James runs a hand th

Chapter 26: Don't Lie to me
“Ok, so what does that mean, then?” I ask, turning my back on him as I walk to the side of the bed. “It means Johnathon is still the real alpha.”“But we already knew that Enzo.” I frown at him over my shoulder as I pull back the comforter to climb into my bed.“We didn’t know to what extent. The pack’s security is absolute shit. Only a small portion of the pack actually respects James as their alpha. It’s because Johnathon hasn’t handed the full title over yet. And the only reason for that is because James isn’t a suitable replacement.” My mouth sours and the thought of James being as bad as an alpha as Enzo says just doesn’t sit right with me. James is sexy and kind to me, but most of all, I like him. I genuinely enjoy his company and his hugs. I’ve never been the girl who wants someone to have a position of power, and I’m still not. It’s the thought that James is failing so terribly that is weirdly turning me off? It’s a feeling that is hard to describe. “James is not a terrible

Chapter 27: Sarah
“Sarah. Are you okay?” I ask, reaching out to steady her as she sways. “I don’t really know…” she mutters, her eyes drooping closed before shooting back open. “I just haven’t been feeling the best.” “Let me walk you back to your room. Do you need a healer?” I ask her and she shakes her head no, her eyes turning into worried saucers. “No healers. I don’t trust the pack healers.” She clings to me and I just watch her with mild confusion. “What do you want me to do, then?” I ask her, confused. I can’t imagine why she would come to me or why she wouldn’t trust the healers in the pack. Her cheeks redden and she drops her gaze. “I was hoping you would have sanitary items I could borrow… Since you know… you are mating with the alpha…” I rear back at her words, a sneer on my lips. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I demand. “Alpha James… He said you were mates and that you are going to provide him with an heir… I thought…” “You thought wrong.” I snap out. “Do I look pregnant

Chapter 28: I am vengeance
“You did?” Sarah asks. Her eyes find the tea on the bedside table and she moves for it, wrapping her hands around the steaming cup and taking a sip. “Yeah. My mom, dad, and my brother.” I murmur. I’ve never talked about this out loud before. I never had to with Enzo. He just knew he understood because he was there. He may not have witnessed the death of my parents, but he witnessed his parents’ death. Enzo and I are one and the same, broken but functioning. “What was your brother’s name?” Sarah asks, getting more snuggled into the bed. “Caleb,” I whisper. “He was my older brother, and he was always looking out for me when he wasn’t picking on me.” “Chloe was my baby sister.” Sarah frowns, her eyes glittering with tears. “Alpha Jonathon is so evil.” “Did James really just watch?” I ask, my chest aching. The thought of him being less than what I have built him up in my head to be is scary. Is it so easy for a woman to fool herself with emotions? “He wanted to help. But the more

Chapter 29: Breaking in
~Enzo POV~ I almost told her. For the first time in over five years, I almost said the word love and meant it. The last people I said that word to were my parents. And I stupidly, prematurely, almost told Ivy that I didn’t like her. I love her. I want to be angry at myself for nearly saying it, but I feel more disappointed that we were interrupted. The things I would do for Ivy are endless. Shit, I assassinated someone tonight just to ensure that Alpha James wouldn’t be sleeping in her bed tonight. Was he a bad guy? Yes. I recognized him as the warrior terrorizing the staff in the kitchen over something the day they took our pack from us. He gutted the lead omega when she refused to step out of his way. An attempt, I assume, to keep him from harming the others. Brave and pointless. The second I saw him stumbling his way down the trail, I jumped into action. I didn’t even give myself the time to process what I was doing other than the alarm bells of who he was and the need for him to

Chapter 30: Snooping
~Ivy POV~ Orange and yellow hues are just peeking over the horizon, filtering through the kitchen windows as I reach into the cupboard to pull out the coffee container. By the time I made it back here last night, Sarah had been passed out in her room. I wanted to wake her up and tell her she would be safe soon. That I wouldn’t let anyone hurt her anymore, but what she needs more than anything is sleep. And I need to press her a little for information on where she meets the dickface who hurts her. I have no doubt that he meets her in different places. One thing Alpha Jonathon is not is stupid. I wish I could say he is a burly, brainless man with a knack for killing, but it would be a lie. He is annoyingly smart and knows most want him dead. It’s no wonder his daughter betrayed him and the pack. Ok, so I don’t know the details that lead to her betrayal or what she even did. But if she acted against her father, then she must be freaking awesome. The wooden floorboards creak behind me
