"I need to power up the office. It isn't our permanent space yet, but Tex and my brothers are on their way."Donal nodded then stepped back into the elevator. The doors closed on him. Pete swallowed hard. "Let's find those bathrooms.""I'd like to get clean."Pete led her down the most obvious hallway. He came to the first bedroom and poked in his head. There was a closet and a bathroom off this bedroom. Pete stepped into the room and opened the closet door. "There are some clothes.""I'll see if some fit."They were dancing around something, but Pete wasn't sure what it was. He would give Jenna as much space as she needed. The day had been terrible for her, and he had no idea how to soothe her. Of course, he didn't want to. His rational brain screamed at him to leave, to just go somewhere else. If Jenna was his fairy, he wanted nothing to do with her. But he couldn't leave. The part of him that had served his country, that had embraced being a soldier, couldn't leave her behind. She

Pete didn't have a plan. He didn't want to reveal himself to Jenna, but she wouldn't stop asking. "I guess I have to show her who I am." He looked around the table. "I need your permission to let her know that you are gargoyles also."Donal let out a sardonic laugh and looked at his brothers. "Weren't we talking about this recently? Maybe it's time to out ourselves?""This could be a test case," Sean, Donal's brother, said. "She's a safe bet having already seen Pete in gargoyle form.""We have to be sure of this," Deke said. "There is no unlearning our secret."That's what Pete thought also. He could reveal himself, but Jenna would want to know if he was the only one. He'd never entertained the idea that he'd let someone else into his supernatural world. "If I can't reveal myself to her then I need to step out of this operation.""She trusts you," Donal said. "I can see how she looks at you."Pete waved his hand. "I merely saved her from a situation.""No, it's more than that," Declan

Trent eyed him then nodded. "What if everyone else is on board?""Then I may just step out. Someone can buy out my shares."Trent faced forward, seeming to digest that information. He didn't bring it up again. Pete threw himself into setting up the nightclub with his partner, and finally it was time to open. A few customers straggled in, followed by an official-looking man with a badge, who entered the main area. He smelled of goblin. This was not going to turn out well. He shouted. "I want all patrons to leave. I'm shutting this place down by order of the Philadelphia Department of Health and the Philadelphia Fire Marshall's office."They gathered around the man. "What grounds?" Trent asked, but they all knew something smelled and it wasn't just the official. "This place is a fire hazard and we're closing this up."The patrons filed out, grumbling as they went. This didn't look good, but Pete didn't know what their rights were. When the customers were gone, more goblins came in. T

"Instead of rejoicing in the time he had with your mother, he never actually found his fairy.""What do you mean? She was the love of his life.""But you aren't half fairy. You are all gargoyle. That means your mother was a gargoyle also."Pete had never thought about that. He'd bought into the mythos that his father had found his only love in his mother when there might have been someone else out there for him. His father never looked. Pete leaned his forearms onto his thighs. His father had never looked for his fairy.Did that change anything? Even though his father had died without ever finding his fairy—or even looking for her—he still believed that Pete's mother was his only love. Still… what if Pete's fairy died? What if he built a life with Jenna, and she died in some freak accident? They lived longer than humans, but they weren't immortal. She could die in a car accident. She just couldn't die if he was with her.But knowing this didn't make leaving any easier or harder. "What

Pete flew back to Philadelphia. He couldn't find Jenna without help—or at least, he couldn't save her without help. Professor Sather promised to keep his truck in a barn, so no one would see it. Pete could retrieve it later.Jenna was his focus. Even if he didn't stay with her, he wanted her safe. That was his mission. Landing on the roof of Trent's building, Pete transformed back into a human and pulled on some clothing. No one could have seen him in the darkness, but he glanced around anyway before heading to the floor where Foley Security was located. When he arrived, the three brothers were in the conference room. Containers of food were scattered on a sideboard and his stomach rumbled. He'd intended to eat on the road, then didn't drive back."Hey," Donal said, wiping his mouth with a napkin. "Help yourself."Pete filled a plate, but only because flying always made him hungry. All he could think about was Jenna. Where was she? Was she hurt? He could have saved her if he hadn't lef
