Chapter 41: Mate's Touch
Unfrickin' believable! Lainie stormed through the sheriff's department, her hands clinched into tight fists. She didn't need Rance's charm or assistance. She didn't need him anywhere near her, no matter how much her panther panted in his direction. Besides, his entire story reeked of bullshit. She wasn't sure what game he played, but he definitely worked some angle, and until she knew what it was, she would keep him as far away from her as possible. She rapped on the doorframe of Chet's office before barging inside. "Did this idiot give you a laptop?"Chet glanced up at her from underneath his gray bangs, a grin pushing up his cheeks. "Nice to see you're playing well with others." He reached out to the top of his desk and tapped the plastic bag perched there. "I think this is what you want."She reached out, taking the evidence bag, and stared at the laptop. "Have you looked at it yet?" Noise from behind her caught her attention, but she didn't turn around. She knew it was Rance. The m

Chapter 42: Mate's Touch
Rance parked in front of Everglades, the only place in the small community that passed for a bar. However, looking at the dilapidated building, he still possessed his doubts about that. The building looked more like a piecemeal shack thrown together after a hurricane than an actual structure built on purpose. With his luck, Rance would walk inside and the whole place would give up the ghost and come crashing down around him. I really hope this place at least has decent whiskey. After the scene at the sheriff's department, Rance desperately needed a drink.Opening his door, he slid out of his car, shoving the keys into his pocket, and took a deep breath of the stifling evening air. As he turned toward the entrance, his mind shifted back to the interrogation of the Serpent gang member. Rance had no idea what the kid meant by loose ends. With Roger dead, what else was there to worry about except the video, which was already in evidence lockup? Unless they stormed the sheriff's department,

Chapter 43: Mate's Touch
Lainie watched as Rance pulled his shirt over his head, his muscles rippling, his abs pulled taut. She forced herself to look away before her panther urged her to take the man where he stood. She did not need these feelings right now, not with a killer still on the loose. To be honest, she didn't need her panther's stirrings, period, having made her peace with a celibate life. However, as Rance started to unbutton his pants and she heard the zipper sliding downward, she couldn't stop herself from turning back around to watch as he slid his pants down his powerful legs, the material slipping over his ass as he faced away from her, his ass firm, full. Bite-able. Her breath caught in her throat as she jerked her gaze back around, away from where the detective stripped, ready to shift and track the assailant.Oh god, it's my turn. While shifters were quite comfortable being naked in front of others—it was part of their natural world after all—Lainie struggled to be naked in front of Rance

Chapter 44: Mate's Touch
Rance heard what the punk said, knew he needed to sit still and wait it out. They were just words after all, and Lainie and he needed to hear more to know their next move. However, his wolf was in control now, the shift giving the animal more power than his human portion and was not about to allow the man in front of them to threaten the one the wolf had already claimed as his mate. Rance's wolf leaped out of hiding, his claws out and teeth ready to gnash at someone's arm, a growl ripping from his chest. The man sitting on the trunk of the car screamed, jerking himself backward further on the trunk, trying to shove himself through the rear windshield in his escape. The other kid, eyes wide, screamed as well as he darted around to the front of the car, ducking as if he could hide from the wolf. Rance knew better. There was no hiding from his wolf. Or from him. What the hell are you doing? He heard Lainie shouting in his mind. You're screwing everything up, damn it!He knew he was screwi

Chapter 45: Mate's Touch
Gracie's Diner was a small hole in the wall attached to the only gas station between Melbourne and St. Cloud. Travelers could stop in for lunch, fill their car up with gas, and grab a bag of chips and a drink for the rest of their journey. The building was concrete with faded white paint and walls that needed pressure-washing just to be able to see the bottom layer of dirt. The parking lot was chipped asphalt and pot holes surrounded by weeds that had choked out the grass decades ago, and the sad part was, the exterior of the building looked better than the interior. The tables were a fake-wood Formica, and what wasn't chipped was stained with no one knew what. However, it was probably the same dark liquid that stained the cheap linoleum floor. The chairs were a hideous burnt orange that seemed leftover from the seventies and had as many tears with exposed stuffing as fabric. The building even smelled old, like one of those antique shops back in Downtown Melbourne, musty with the aroma

Chapter 46: Mate's Touch
Rance stormed toward the interrogation room where he knew Jace waited, once again in cuffs attached to the loop in the middle of the table. Deputy Johnson stood outside the door, shaking his head. "You know, Lainie isn't going to like this," the deputy said. "Isn't she all over your ass enough as it is?"Rance nodded, outwardly showing he understood the deputies concerns, while inwardly, he wanted Lainie Everest all over him in so many stimulating ways. "Then we just won't tell her." He glanced through the window in the door at the small man stuck inside the room. "You know as well as I do that something isn't adding up." He pointed inside the room. "That kid knows something, and I intend to find out what it is." Rance knew he was just lucky to be in the sheriff's department when Lainie called Johnson about the cell phone and how the other gang members were seen heading west out of town. Johnson was the only one they had told about their little jaunt into the woods and coming upon the

Chapter 47: Mate's Touch
Two days passed and Lainie was afraid that Rance's stunt scared off the Serpent gang members, making them actually leave town, since there had been no attack upon her for her access to the evidence locker. She sat in a rocker on her front porch, a cup of English breakfast tea warming her hands, dressed only in a flimsy tank and some silky pajama shorts as she stared out at the woods surrounding her cabin. While she had forgiven the detective for his little stunt in the woods when he attacked the one who threatened her, she still wanted to throttle him for the way he may have screwed things up. If he had left well enough alone, they could have returned to their clothes and called for backup, lying in wait for the men to admit to the murder again.Lainie stopped rocking, following that trail of thought. Why can't we still do that? They don't need to know we were in our animal forms when we heard them talk about Roger's murder. She shook her head. It wouldn't work. If they had heard it th

However, Lainie had no regrets. It was true she had no idea what tomorrow would bring or if Rance would leave with the next sunrise, but she wasn't going to pass up this chance to finally feel something. It had been way too long. She wrapped an arm around his waist and snuggled in tighter. "You okay?" she heard him ask just before he kissed the top of her head."Just giving myself a pep talk. I'm not one for living in the moment so much. I like to know what's coming."She felt him caress her bare arm, his breathing even, comforting. "And are you heeding this pep talk you're giving yourself?""Well, I haven't kicked you out yet, so that's a positive sign, right?"He chuckled, his chest bouncing with his laughter. "I'll take it." He kissed her again, and she felt herself relaxing even more. "How long has it been since you've been in a relationship, if I may ask?"She hesitated for a moment, not that she didn't mind telling Rance about her past, but more that she just didn't want to revi

Chapter 49: Mate's Touch
Rance watched as Lainie walked out the door, fighting the urge to follow her. He needed that video, true, but he also needed her to see that he was serious about everything he told her. She needed to do this her way if he was going to get her to trust him and believe in them. True, he ran the risk of the district attorney he worked for getting pissed off for the delay, but Lainie was worth it. More than worth it.After pouring himself a cup of coffee from the brewer he found under her kitchen sink, he took a quick scan around the interior of the cabin. He missed his opportunity to really see the place earlier before she dragged him back to her bedroom. Of course, he didn't complain. Nor would he ever. Now that his wolf had made his desires known, Rance had a hard time understanding how he had ever done without Lainie in his life before. Too many things, he suddenly, realized he had been missing without even knowing it, things like the soft contours of her curves and the way she fit per

Chapter 50: Mate's Touch
Lainie tried moving her head, but the pain that screamed throughout her skull forced her to hold still. She bit the inside of her cheek to keep from groaning out loud, needing a moment to think things through from what she remembered last. Johnson had called, saying he had the video for Rance, and she was on her way to check it out. No, she had arrived at the sheriff's department. She made it there, at least, and then…She took slow, shallow breaths, trying her best to slow her breathing as well as settle her nerves. Voices could be heard nearby, and Lainie felt wind caressing her cheeks and tugging her hair. She was outside. That was a plus at least. She made it to the sheriff's department earlier but barely made it out of her car before someone had knocked her out from behind. Who did it wasn't hard to figure out. Having never left town, the Serpents must have grown tired of waiting and made their move. That they had the balls to attack her outside of the sheriff's department amazed
