Chapter 11
"Beau?" I called out from the foyer after letting myself in. Without a reply, I started toward the stairs, hollering his name louder this time. "Beau!""I'm upstairs. Stop yelling." He sounded as hungover as I felt. As I took the steps two at a time, I heard him pad down the hall toward his old bedroom. By the time I reached the landing, he'd disappeared. I'd spent so much time in this house, I could navigate it blindfolded. And I knew exactly where he'd be. On his back on the bed with a forearm covering his eyes and his knees hanging over the side-just as I suspected.I took a seat in the lounge chair in the corner. His bedroom was the size of my living room and kitchen combined."You want to tell me what's going on?""Not particularly.""Do it anyhow."He groaned and sat up, dropping his arm to his side and his hands into his lap. "There's nothing to tell.""The hell there's not. You've done nothing other than fight with Felicity since both of you pulled into town. Y

Chapter 12
"Just my mom.""And she's just standing by while it happens?" Miffed. I was totally miffed. "Why haven't you told your dad?""My mom took the prenup to her lawyer to see if there were any loopholes. She didn't think we should tell my dad since I'd lose my trust fund. Even if I end up marrying her, my grandfather wrote it to prevent his grandsons from making stupid decisions that might derail their lives. If anyone finds out she's pregnant, it's gone.""So your dad doesn't know?"He shook his head."What did the lawyer say?""To marry her and file for divorce a year later." He had resigned himself to this fate.I'd be puking my guts up in the bathroom facing the fact that I'd just lost millions to get laid. There was no way in hell I'd take it lying down, and I didn't care what it cost me, I'd kick her ass to the curb."That was his advice? What kind of quack tells a guy to get married with plans to divorce a year later?""Josten White." There was part of the problem.

Chapter 13
It didn't matter how many years passed or where the two of us lived, nothing ever changed. I'd never had a hard time convincing Beau to do things my way...which was probably why he hadn't wanted to tell me about any of this. I had no problems playing dirty when the deck was stacked, and it was most certainly stacked in Felicity's favor."Why the hell are there so many to pick from?" "Keep your voice down." With my head bowed, I glanced around to see if anyone was around. "Two guys should never buy a pregnancy test together. Just get that one." I pointed to the box that showed a digital test window. There'd be no mistaking one or two lines. It would either be a yes or no. It was also the most expensive, so I assumed it was accurate."Should I get a couple?" Like I knew. "Sure. That way, she can prove over and over what a liar she is. It'll be great. Get one for each member of the family she's fucked over, too-including yours. Kind of like memorabilia.""You're an ass."Onl

Chapter 14
"What's this? I don't have time for games, Beau." She looked at Peyton for an answer, and when she got nothing, she peered inside. I'd never actually witnessed steam come out of anyone's ears like it did in cartoons, but Felicity came close to being the first. "Are you kidding me?"Beau's lips stretched into a thin line just before he rolled them into his mouth and popped the P in "Nope."She closed the sack and tried to force it back. "I've already taken a test. You saw it."He refused to take it and pushed it toward her. "Then you won't mind taking a few more. You'll be in and out in five, six minutes tops. Just pee in one cup, and I'll dip each one of the tests for you. You don't even have to wait for the results if you're so certain. Think of this as an early wedding present for me.""I've never been so insulted in all my life. I don't know what you're trying to prove, Beau, but it's tasteless and ill-timed.""So was a pregnancy when I tried to put the brakes on things."

Chapter 15
For someone who appeared composed at all times, Mrs. Holstein wasn't maintaining her air of dignity all that well."I hope you're proud of yourself." If hate were a tangible thing, I could hold hers-and choke the crap out of it."Damn straight. I saved my best friend from the worst mistake of his life." "He'll never find another girl like Felicity.""I sure as hell hope not. I don't think I could deal with this shit twice.""Who do you think you are? You're nothing more than a backwoods-"Mrs. Chastain had an uncanny ability to materialize out of thin air. She was like a ninja, she moved so quietly. Although, with this level of chaos, a mariachi band could have made a surprise entrance. "Margaret. I'd suggest you stop right there with the insults. Lee didn't do anything wrong.""I'm flabbergasted by you, Bev. Do you have any idea the shame and embarrassment your son has brought on us? There are hundreds of people who have flown in from out of state to be here today."I

Chapter 16
When Peyton and I exited, I realized I didn't have transportation. Beau had ridden with me, and so had Masyn, so when they left the church, I gave him my keys. I could walk home if I had to, but doing so in a tuxedo would suck. It had to be in the nineties, and the sun was still shining brightly overhead, even as it started to set. Summer days lingered till nearly nine o'clock, and the heat never went away. I stopped on the steps and called Beau to see where they were."Hey, Lee," Beau answered on the first ring, sounding better than he had this morning."Where are you and Masyn?" I shielded my eyes from the early evening sun and scanned the streets. They weren't likely to be nearby; I didn't want to look like a moron talking on a cellphone while standing on the steps of an empty church in a tux.Peyton shifted her weight more than once, waiting to see if she needed to drop me off. Her continuous movement caught my attention, and I realized the shoes she had on must be strangling

We wove our way through the parked cars and four-wheel drives and made it to the covered entrance. I held the heavy door open so Peyton could step inside. The layer of smoke wasn't quite as dense as usual, and the crowd remained thin. When the steel door slammed behind us, she jumped and grabbed my hand. Her eyes widened in surprise."I promise, no one here bites."She nodded but didn't let go of me. It didn't take long for me to spot Masyn and Beau in a booth in the corner, and I pointed them out to Peyton. She took that as her cue to move away from the door and in the direction of my friends. "Hey, Lee." Sherry, one of the waitresses who'd been here since she could legally serve alcohol, stopped us. "Good to see you. Who's your friend?" Her mouth kept moving even after she quit speaking-gum. Bless her heart; her mama had never told her that a cow chewing cud wasn't an attractive thing to mimic. "Sherry, this is Peyton; Peyton, Sherry."Peyton extended her hand, not expect

Chapter 18
Turning to Peyton, I explained, "Masyn and I tried to talk Beau out of proposing last Christmas. It didn't have anything to do with Felicity. We didn't know her. We just thought they were rushing things." That was a nice way to put that we believed she was after his last name and bank account."Anyway," Beau continued, "if her parents don't fight it, and Josten doesn't believe they will, then I'm just stuck with legal expenses for his time."Josten White was the only lawyer in town. He'd graduated from high school with Masyn's oldest brother, Ty. Once he passed the BAR, he came back to Harden to set up practice. We all thought he was crazy at the time-nothing happened in Harden to need an attorney, people didn't even get divorced. Oddly enough, once he'd opened his doors, business started flowing through. Workers' comp, farmers with land disputes, child support-he did it all. And made bank."I can't imagine my parents fighting any of this. My mom won't want the negative publicity

Chapter 19
The second I laid eyes on what he gaped at, I nearly lost my shit. Toby's hands were all over Masyn's ass, and his thigh was between her legs. This wasn't Dirty Dancing, and he sure as shit wasn't Patrick Swayze. But the longer I watched, I noticed she wasn't trying to get away from him-she was encouraging it. Her head dipped to his chest, and she rocked her hips on his jeans. Any second now, she'd toss her hair back and release the sounds of an orgasm, like Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally. That would undoubtedly get the town talking. Staring at her, I realized I'd let her pick way too many movies over the years, when all my film references came from sappy chick flicks with happy fucking endings. When the song ended, I went back to the booth, and Peyton went in search of the bathroom. I warned her to squat and not sit, but she just looked at me like she didn't understand-she would when she got there. Masyn stayed on the dance floor with Toby, not once looking in our direction. "What

"Everything okay in there? Masyn didn't seem very happy when we were leaving." Peyton didn't have a clue what was going on, although I couldn't really speculate myself. "I'm sure she's fine. I don't know what her deal was tonight. It's been a weird day all around.""Are you surprised Beau wasn't more upset?""About?"She laughed, and I drove. "My guess is this isn't how he envisioned his wedding night going.""You're right, this was a hell of a lot better." Thankfully, she felt the same way about her sister that we did. "But to answer your question, no. Beau was a mess when I got to his parents' house this morning. I think he's relieved at this point." I wasn't sure any of this had really hit him, either. Right now, he felt relief, but that didn't mean over the next few days he wouldn't crash into a pit of despair, cradling a beer in one hand and Felicity's picture in the other."Yeah, you haven't really told me what happened. I've kind of drawn my own conclusions." Peyton
