Jayden watched him walk away until she could no longer see his large form. ‘Vampires!’ Bile rose in the back of her throat, which she quickly forced back down with a forceful swallow. Her hands trembled with anxiety as her heart raced within the confines of her chest. A red flush spread from her cheeks to her neck as her blue eyes darted back and forth, her mind racing with the crushing weight of her thoughts. ‘Damn it!’ the scream echoed through the seemingly abandoned mansion, closely followed by the sound of glass shattering. With a thunderous crash, Alexa found herself lying flat on her back, her lungs screaming in agony as the air left them like an escaped convict, both suddenly and silently. In comparison, the skin of her back throbbed almost loudly, stinging from the impact of her full body weight slamming against the barely padded flooring they had the audacity to call a sparring mat. Stars burst from behind eyelids she'd had no memory of closing, and she fought behind sharp, painful gasps in a desperate attempt to refill her lungs with much-needed oxygen.
