A way to escape.
Evie's POV My body felt dead to me. Even as I diced the vegetables to use for breakfast, I couldn't feel any part of my body. More correctly, I was feeling every inch of my body, but I was feeling them the wrong way. The pain I was getting from it was almost like I was going to die if I let my brain process it. I lifted the plate in my hand to pour the diced vegetables into the soup and hot tears spilled from my face as the arm felt heavy, like extra weights had been added to it and it didn't belong to me. The pain I got sent a sharp warning to my brain.Try as I could, I couldn't block the pain out of my head. I couldn't admit that I was the reason why I was in so much pain. I couldn't say that I had done something wrong to warrant the pain. I hadn't. After all, there was nothing wrong with wanting my freedom, especially when what I faced daily was always pain and dejection.I sniffed in to control the tears that clouded my vision. I couldn't afford to make a mistake with the cookin

Freedom.
Evie's POV All through the rest of the day, I didn't set my sight on Miss Kardashian anymore. It was as if she completely disappeared from the mansion. Neither did I see Miss Aurora, or even the Alpha, or the Gamma. It was like all of them left me to my own devices. I didn't exactly mind the distance since it gave me the opportunity to think deeply about my life and what it was that I wanted.I sighed as my mind went back to Miss Kardashian's offer. Could I really trust the woman? And even if I couldn't trust her, could I trust her word that she was just doing it because she was grateful to me for saving her?I stood up from where I sat in the corner of the room. It didn't matter whether I could trust her or not. I was ready to take the risk. Even if it meant that I was going to be in trouble later. Besides, there was no way the woman would be able to get scott free if I got caught in her scheme. All I would do was point out that she led me up to it. But I was never going to lose a c

Back to the pack.
Damon's POV The fact that I had let the woman go weighed heavily on me. True, I might not want her as a mate, but I realized that now that she was gone, there was absolutely no way for me to break the mate bond anymore.Maybe it was a good thing she was gone too.I couldn't believe that she hated my pack so much that she had opted to follow even Miss Kardashian who had shown her nothing but hatred from day one when they had met. When the woman had told me that she was sure that Claire would take the bait if she promised to show her how to escape, I thought she was just saying gibberish. I didn't want to give in to the pressure, but she had sounded so convinced that I had given in just to prove to her that Claire would not be so desperate that she would go with the enemy. But she had surprised me by doing the exact opposite of what I believed she would never do.While Miss Kardashian gloated about winning the bet, I saw only one thing about the woman we made the bet about. She was on

The guard tailed.
Damon's POV I almost didn't get any sleep all through the night. For one thing, I couldn't wait until morning was here so that I could rush over to the marketplace. Evie had a hard time convincing me not to assemble my guards and storm over to the meat seller."They were supposed to meet by morning, so that means that the cloaked man would only be there by morning."I saw reasoning in what she said, so I decided to wait for that morning to come. Now, it was morning, and both Evie and I were tailing the gullible guard that had betrayed me for someone else. Once or twice, the man would turn around to see if there was someone behind him. The moment he did that, Evie and I would quickly hide behind something to protect ourselves from him. Soon enough, the man got the market. Sure enough, as Evie had predicted, he went straight to the only meat seller at the marketplace. He said something to the man. The meat seller looked around first before pointing the guard to a door that was hidden f

The Cloaked man's identity revealed.
Damon's POVI blinked rapidly -about what could be counted as a million times- trying to be sure that I was not imagining who I saw seated. When I still refused to believe that who I was looking at was who I was actually staring at, I looked at Evie to be sure that I was not the only one imagining things. The way her jaw dropped and her teeth were out there in the open for anyone who wanted to count them assured me that I was not the one thinking about the wrong person.I looked back at the man, and I realized that he hadn't seen us yet. His attention was still focused on who he was talking with. I opened my mouth to say something, but no sound came out. Evie gasped softly after a while, and I felt that she was going to do something harsh if I did nothing to stop her. I couldn't blame her though, I was still in shock myself."Al-Alpha, is that... truly... who..." She let the words trail off, obviously afraid of saying the name."Cor...nel?" I stammered the one name I never thought was

Reasons for the betrayal.
Damon's POV Even though I wanted to get angry like no man's business, I knew that I needed some kind of explanation from Cornel. What the man was insinuating was something that my brain has not yet been able to comprehend even though I always tagged myself as brilliant. If I was right about the whole thing, that would mean that the man was implying that he was truly dead before. If that was the case, how the hell did he wake to be alive, and what had gone wrong with his voice? I needed to know before I went mad."What the hell happened?" I questioned him again. He began to breathe heavily and I could tell that he was getting angry. Extremely so. Yes, I regretted my action back then when I killed him for no reason. Or there was a reason, but the approach I used in handling the situation was a little over the top for me. But what was I to do? He had been about to rape the poor woman. Even if I was willing to forgive all sins on this earth, the sin of trying to have non-consensual sex

Evie scared of Alpha Damon.
Evie's POV The moment he held my hand, I jostled. I always knew that the man I was addicted to calling master was callous, but I never realized the extent of his cruelty. I shook my hand away from him and stopped walking with him. He stopped also, and turned to look at me. But my concentration was not on him. My concentration was on the hand he held. I was busy checking to see if there was no blood stain on it. "Evie." He began. I shook my head vigorously, cutting him off from whatever it wasbhe wanted to say. I took a step back, then another. When I saw him try to move closer to me, I turmed and made a run for it. I didn't get very far away before I felt his hands wrapped firmly around my waist. "Whqt is your problem?!" He yelled at me. "How could you just brutally murder two people and still set them aflame?!" I countered bavk at him. Even now that i was just thinking about it, I felt like vomiting. It was a good thing I hadn't had my breakfast yet. Otherwise, I would have los

The truth about Damon's action.
Damon's POV I hastened my footsteps, wanting to be as far away from Evie as before she would realize that I was out of breath and only just managed to get my feet to walk. I didn't even know why I did what I did in the first place. After she looked at me like I was a killer and she raced away from me, I immediately turned to return to the pack, so I could share the victory of capturing and killing the cloaked man with them -of course, I was not going to tell them who it was or how it came to be that once a dead person came back alive. Still, I would tell them the truth about the death so that their mind would be at rest. But then, I wasn't settled. A part of me had refused to move from the spot where Evie left me. I realized that it was because I was worried for her. Much as I wanted to blame Leo for the manipulation, I knew my wolf had nothing to do with the concern I was feeling for the woman. Before I could stop myself, I raced off in the direction she took, going in search of h

The mill.
Damon's POV The Gamma and I finally got to the large hall for the meeting. All the Elders and the Beta were already seated. Gamma Samuel left my side and went straight to sit with the Beta. I moved to the throne area and stood everyone stood on the ceremony and waited until I was seated. "People of this pack, I have good news for you," I announced to them. I could see it in everyone's eyes. The emotions of wanting to know what the goodness I was about to share was all about. I smiled to myself, knowing that they would indeed be very happy with what I was about to say. "The perpetrator of evil emboding this land has finally been caught," I let out. Everyone in the pack, except Gamma Samuel of course, all looked from one person to another, trying to determine if what I was saying was the truth. I smiled at them, eager to let them know the reason for my happiness. "You all remembered the cloaked man that has been troubling us on this land, right?" I questioned them. Murmurs rose in

Turned to a slave.
Evie's POV After Miss Aurora and I spent some time together, talking about everything that was going on with us and we parted ways, I was lost about where to go or what to do. I didn't know if I should just return to the slaves' quarter and sleep or if I should get back to work. Well, I returned to the servant's quarter and slept the day away. Imagine my shock when no one woke me up to come and work. I still couldn't help but wonder what that meant. Even this morning, while it looked like everyone was in a rush, no one looked at me twice or asked me to do things. Was I truly free? Of a truth, Alpha Damon already granted me my freedom. That had to mean that I was no longer obligated to touch even a pin at the pack anymore. But then again, it was the cold-hearted Alpha we were ranting about. He might decide in his heart that since I walked back into the pack, twice at that, I was okay with being a slave of the pack. Thus, he might ask me to return to being a servant, and there would
