Chapter 10: Lily
Ever heard the phrase ‘Up shit’s creek without a paddle’? Yeah, that’s about how I’m feeling right now. Hera pushes her aura out, feeling Kella’s as well. We need to know how many vampires are in this room and surrounding us in case we have to fight our way out. “How did he die?” Leana asks the King. “It was time for him to retire. He and I disagreed on too many things. He wasn’t willing to change his outdated and archaic ways, so I killed him and took my rightful place as king.” He comes to stand in front of us. When he hits our aura, he’s stopped in his tracks. “Is there a problem, Guardians?” I give him a fake smile. “I’m afraid I’m not feeling very welcome in your castle, King Lance. My wolf is feeling threatened and when she does, she takes a protective stance. I’m sure you understand.” He returns my fake smile. “We’ll have to change that. I wouldn’t want you to leave here feeling as if I was not a good host. Especially since this is the first time I’ve had an opportunity to

Chapter 11: Lily
When we step out, I see that there are guards, or I’m sure King Lance would call them guides, waiting for us. Their eyes immediately go to our necks and their eyes turn red. “Custos Regni.” One whispers. “If you want to continue to live this life you seem to enjoy, I suggest you get your fucking eyes off our necks and take us to the dining hall.” I snarl at him, Hera pushing forward. “Yes Guardians. My companion meant no disrespect.” “We’re not here to be your feeders, so you can spot licking your lips like we’re dessert.” Leana and Kella snarl. When we walk into the dining hall, there is one long wooden table that is filled with vampires and their human counterparts. I notice there are a fair share of male humans willing to be feeders as well. Vampires are known for being indiscriminate when it comes to sexual partners. Well, in truth, I’ve heard that they mostly participate in feeding orgies, but that’s what I’ve heard. I’ve never actually seen one. King Lance stands from his po

Chapter 12: Lily
As we walk out, I look at Leana. She’s stiff, rigid and Kella is shining brightly in her eyes. Is this because she just killed that vampire? I reach out and take her hand, feeling her clasp mine tightly. I give her a look, letting her know without words that we’re okay, that we’ll be okay and that I’m here. I’m not sure what’s got Leana on edge, but something is wrong. We follow Drake through the castle to a much quieter part of the castle that we haven’t been in yet. “At the risk of being forward, the safest place for you tonight is in my room. I’ll have the sheets changed and you can both sleep there. I’ll stay awake and make sure no one bothers you.” “What was your father planning to do with us?” I ask as he opens the door to his room. I feel Leana tense and watch as she takes a deep breath. Oh no. I know what this is. I turn and give Drake a closer look. He’s Leana’s mate. He steps into his room behind us and closes the door. He leans against it and runs his hands through his h

Chapter 13: Lily
After speaking to my father, explaining what happened and talking him down from attacking King Lance, I realize today is day four. I’m halfway to the time that Aolis gave me. I thought running would be the faster way to get to him but with all the challenges we’ve come across, it’s making it difficult to meet his timeframe. I walk away from Drake and Leana and attempt to call Aolis again. It rings and rings and when it goes to voicemail, I hang up. He wouldn’t move on if I don’t make it in seven days, would he? He’s waited this long. If I’m a day late, he won’t hold it against me, right? And he wouldn’t shorten the time without telling me, I hope. He’s never, in all of my life, not answered my call. And now he hasn’t answered my call, twice. It makes my heart hurt and I realize I’ve taken Aolis for granted for too long. I need him to know that I love him, that I want him. When I return, we begin running again. Now that Drake is here, Leana is more focused on him. It gives me time to

Chapter 14: Aolis
It’s day six and no Lily. I realized a couple days ago that I left my phone at the council. In a glimmer of hope, I asked our tech guys, meaning our tinkering leprechauns, to transfer my voicemails to my new cell phone. Not one message from Lily. It’s time for me to start making plans to live my life without her. I start by packing my bags. I don’t know how long I’ll be gone, long enough to ask Lorelai to marry me, have a wedding and then have a fae version of a honeymoon. So, at least a month. I pack my wedding robes. I’ve had them for years. They are the formal wear of the fae, and since I thought Lily would be my bride, I had them made in the color of her eyes, pale blue with golden hemming to include Hera. I pull the robes out of my closet, my heart aching for what will never be. I pack them away before I become too melancholy, grabbing clothing for travel and for formal dinners. Then I add some casual clothing for wherever she wants to go to seal our bond while we get to know e

Chapter 15: Lily
It took Leana almost all day to recover from her blood loss. Kella was working overtime to heal her, but the body can only recover so fast from loss of blood. When she finally opened her eyes, Drake had nearly sobbed in relief. I think maybe he actually did, because I smelled the scent of blood and there was a bit smudged on his face. Do vampires cry blood tears? I have no idea. While I was talking to Leana, explaining what had happened, Drake had gone out hunting, bringing back a deer for her. While I’m used to werewolves killing forest creatures, I’m not used the violence that was shown in this carcass. The throat had been ripped out, leaving a gaping wound and nearly decapitating the poor creature. He had moved only close enough to toss the deer at my feet before stepping back, keeping his distance. I still didn’t trust him, and I didn’t want him too close to Leana. He might feel guilty for almost killing his mate, but that didn’t stop him when he was in the throes of bloodlust.

Chapter 16: Lily
Leana and Drake wake early on sixth day. We push hard all day, moving quickly through the forests, slowing only for food or when we have to cross pack lands. We’re making great time, and if we’d been able to do this, every day, I’d have been in Araphyra days ago. When we stop for the night, I know it will be close. I need to arrive tomorrow. I don’t know what Aolis’s plans are, or if he’ll give me another day or two if I don’t meet his deadline. He’s never been strict with me about anything. He’s always forgiven me or let me get away with things when I was growing up. I remember, on my 10th birthday, I was so excited to get my wolf. He had called first thing in the morning, wishing me a happy birthday and telling me that he’d be there for my party in the evening. Aolis, being ten years older than I am, was already involved in being a royal and ruling over his people. He didn’t really have time to come to a 10-year-old’s birthday party, but he was making time for me, just like he alwa

Chapter 17: Aolis
I knew she wouldn’t come. I knew it, and yet, my heart aches that she doesn’t want me, that she isn’t here. I lay in my bed, knowing that tomorrow, I’ll be leaving for Eventide. I close my eyes and steel myself for what is to come. Lorelai is a good woman. She is strong, beautiful, her people love her and she will make a good queen. I try to keep her in my head, but it’s Lily’s face that keeps pushing its way in. Finally, I get up. I won’t get any sleep tonight. I go walking in the woods, my place of solace and peace. The stars in the sky are shining brightly tonight, as if they are mocking me and my pain. I pass the axolytol pool, glowing in the moonlight with all the different colors of the animals sleeping in the pond. As I get deeper into the woods, I hear more shuffling sounds, startled animals bolting away from me. We have deer here, similar to humans, but our deer are more majestic. The leader of our herd is the Ceryneian Hind, the deer of the humans’ Greek mythology. She h

Chapter 18: Lily
As soon as I wake on Day 7, I grabb a quick bite of food and we start running again. We’re probably five to six hours away from Araphyra when we have to stop for the night. I’m antsy, knowing that today is my deadline. I’d rather run through the night, but considering the attack last night, we decide that it would be better to rest, take shifts and be prepared just in case. When the sun rises, I’m anxious to get going. Leana and Drake can sense my stress and they hurry to pack so we can begin running. We run until we’re on the outskirts of Araphyra. We stop to briefly to eat a quick snack before running to the front entrance of their country. When we get close enough to the gate, we shift and put clothes on. The entrance to Araphyra is in the middle of nowhere, a field with a gate that looks like it belongs on a farm. If you didn’t know better, you’d think it was a remanent of a previous dwelling. I walk up to the gate, impatiently waiting for the guard to come to the gate. I’ve bee

Chapter 19: Aolis
When I left the forest, I had gone back to the castle and gotten my bag. trying to leave without letting anyone know. But it feels like the entire castle knows that I’ve been rejected by my mate. Several of my warriors and many working around the castle stopped me to wish me well on my trip. I strap my sword to my back, putting my knives into the belt of my travel clothes, before pulling the strap of my bag across my chest and over my shoulder. I adjust everything so nothing is tugging and my sword is easily accessible if needed. Once I’m off the immediate grounds surrounding the castle, I begin to run, fast. I need to get away from here, away from the pain of Lily’s rejection and my own dashed hope that she’d show up. I pull on the elements, using the air and earth to speed my footsteps. It’s late afternoon when I arrive in Eventide. I approach the guard gate at the entrance of Eventide's lands. “Prince Aolis to see Duchess Lorelai.” I announce myself to them. “My Prince.” They sa
