CHAPTER TWENTY ONE
It was almost a week after the awful incident between Damien and Annie and everyone still talked about it at the office. Annie dreaded every moment she spent at the office and looked for the perfect excuse to be away from the office when she had the chance. She couldn't get over the embarrassment she had received from him that fateful day. Damien knew he was wrong to have treated her in that way but he was too proud to apologize to her. She should learn to mind her business, he thought. Though he had received enough tongue-lashing from Esme, he was adamant about going to apologize. Damien had just finalized a meeting with one of his prominent clients and was about to see them off when he got a call from Steve, his private investigator. "Hello, Mr. Reed" "What do you have for me?" Damien asked, he wasn't interested in exchanging pleasantries with him, not after he had failed in providing useful information that could be used in tracing his mother's killers. "We have been a

Annie hauled herself up onto her elbows, out of a sated sleep, glanced at the clock on the table next to her bed and screamed. "What?" Naomi asked, bolting awake. "Look at the time!" Annie wailed. "My boss is going to kill me, I'm running late for a meeting!" Calmly, Naomi reached for the telephone receiver and handed it to her. "Call him and tell him that you are a little bit unwell and you'll be there soon." "Unwell?" "Would you rather say you've been sleeping your ass off all night?" "No," she admitted, and dialled Damien's office. Damien was unusually calm and asked her to take her time before coming to work. When she arrived at the office forty-five minutes later, Damien was waiting in her office with his hands behind him. "How do you feel now?" He asked, taking a step forward. "Much better. Thanks" she said, her expression softened, though, knowing he was concerned about her. "Oh, great," he said. He handed a little shopping bag to her "Here you go, you ca

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
Damien didn't bother putting his laptop in the soft briefcase. He just tucked the machine under his arm, grabbed his bags and headed for his car. "Good morning sir," Thomas greeted Muttering a response, Damien got into the car. "Miss Gilbert has a session with her therapist today, do you want me to trail her Sir?" Thomas asked. "That won't be necessary, I have other plans for Gilbert. I'll keep in touch when I need you" Damien said and zoomed off to work. Annie had spent most of her time unpacking, she had not had the time to fully unpack since she moved into her new home, courtesy of her promotion. She was finally done with it and was about to have her bath when a call came in. "Hello," a female voice said. "Hello, who is this?" Annie asked. "Is this Miss Annie Gilbert?" The female voice asked. "Who is asking?" "I'm calling on behalf of Dr Robert concerning your session today. What time would be suitable for you to be here for your session?" Annie thought for a

“YOU CALLED,” Annie asked when she got out of the car, Robert had been bugging her with calls all evening and she was beginning to lose it. He had also sent multiple texts to her asking about her whereabouts and why she hadn't shown up for her session. “You didn't show up for your session like you said you would, what happened?” Robert said from the other end of the receiver. “I told you I had work to do and had to cancel. Is that why you've been bugging my cell phone all day? you're beginning to creep me out” “You have no right to keep me waiting, Annie Gilbert” “Who do you think you are? You know what, I quit. I don't need any more therapy. im fine now” Annie snapped “I’m going to make you pay for it,” he said “You aren't going to do shit” she yelled and hung up on him. She didn't need him anymore. It's been over a week and Annie still hasn't gotten over what Robert did to her. She had been experiencing constant nightmares since then and was away from her official duties. Damien had always made it a point of duty to check up on her every day. "Are you okay?" He asked Annie simply nodded. She was curious and wanted to know how he was able to come to her rescue but she didn't know how to present the question to him without sounding suspicious, she was itching to know and didn't know when she blurted the question out. "How were you able to know what was happening to me at that time? "Let's just say, I was in the right place at the right time, " Damien said. His mouth twitched at one corner. He fought the grin, but it came anyway. Annie found that hard to believe but she was grateful he showed up just in time before Robert had his way with her. Robert was currently in jail and awaiting trial, Annie hoped he'll rot in jail for eternity. Naomi walked in on them, she was

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
Annie was reluctant about going back to work but she had no choice, she had loads of work to accomplish at the office. She also wasn't sure she wanted to face Damien after expressing her feelings to him. She was still pissed that Damien had ignored her and left without saying a word about how she felt. She stood in front of the mirror for a minute all dressed and ready for work. She heaved a huge sigh before leaving the house. She arrived at the office about thirty minutes later and was greeted by Esme on her way to her office. She hadn't set eyes on her since she was attacked. "Hey, I'm glad you're okay," Esme said, pulling her into a tight hug. "I'm fine," Annie chuckled. "Uhm, Esme you can let go now, you're squeezing me up" she added. "I'm sorry, I'm just glad you're fine now. I've missed you," "Awww, I've missed you too. Damien said you had travelled to represent him at a meeting out of town. How did it go?" "It was great. I'm so happy to see that you are good."

CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
The following morning, Annie was ready to hand over her resignation letter to him. She had spent the whole night drafting out the right words to use and ways to present the letter to him. Was she doing the right thing, was resigning the best option? These thoughts crossed Annie's mind as she stared at the resignation letter she was holding. "I hope you're doing the right thing?" Naomi said from behind. "I know he said hurtful things to you but that doesn't mean you have to give up your job because of that," she added. “I am, I can't continue like this. I'm human, Nao, I'm human.” “I know, but you still need to think this through so that you don't do something you might regret later,” Naomi said, trying to convince her. “I already made up my mind. Damn the consequences, I don't care anymore” Annie said “I'm not someone that can be sniffed at by him, I'm sure that he can't stand the sight of me, being there will only hurt me the more because he won't stop himself from being r

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
Damien didn't know how to face her after all the things he had said to her. He had received enough tongue-lashing from Esme that could last a month. He wondered what could be going on with her and if she was okay. He had decided to work from home the next day to avoid her. He had called the receptionist to inform him of Annie's arrival and to not mention anything about him to her or anyone else. He kept himself busy and had nearly five uninterrupted hours, and still, he couldn't concentrate on his work. His words haunted him all day. He decided to seek a distraction by channeling his attention on the package he had received from the warehouse weeks ago. Steve, his sleuth, had forwarded another package to him which he had found. This time, it wasn't a threat to Damien's life but Esme’s. Damien already knew it would come to this, he knew that sooner or later those he cared about would be in danger. “I think you need to leave town for a while, they might be coming for you” Steve

Annie froze when she heard the masked man tell someone over the phone that Damien was dead. Tears rolled down her cheek as she saw him zoom out of the building. She took note of his plate number as he drove out. She saw him remove his mask but she only got a side view of what he looked like. She rushed in and found him in a pool of blood whimpering and struggling to get up. He was losing consciousness when she walked in. She quickly applied pressure on his wound to stop the bleeding. "Damien, wake up." She said to him, "help is on the way. Hold on a little bit". She was going to call the emergency number but Damien refused. "No, call my doctor and Steve," Damien said in a low tone. Annie quickly called them as he requested and continued to apply pressure on his wound until they arrived. Damien had already lost consciousness by the time his doctor arrived. Damien's doctor began treatment immediately while Annie and Steve stepped out of the house to discuss. "Are you alrigh

CHAPTER THIRTY
Annie had taken it up as a duty to make sure he was properly taken care of while Esme oversaw the activities at the office during his absence. They had returned to the penthouse according to Damien's request. Mrs. Harper and Thomas had also resumed their duties. Damien was getting used to having Annie around him and enjoyed her company even though he made a straight face whenever she was around. Mrs. Harper spoke highly of her and they spent time together in the kitchen. Annie decided it was time to finally hand over her resignation letter to him after waiting for him to recover. She walked into his study which was also his mini office as he always called it but it was twice the size of his office at work. He was speaking to a client on the phone when she walked in holding an envelope. "Can we talk?" She asked. "I'll talk to you later," Damien said and hung up. "What do you want to talk about?" He asked, beckoning her to sit down but Annie insisted on standing. "I think i
