I stagger toward the plume of smoke rising above the trees.I have been in this forest for days, ever since my pack was wiped out.I was destined to be a luna.Now I'm just lucky to be alive."Someone's approaching!" a voice calls.I look up. CHAPTER TWO

The den I am led to is basic.Small and dark.Fit for an omega.I sink into the bed.Fatigue overcomes me.How is this my life?I have lost everything.I have lost my pack.I have lost my mate.I am too tired to cry.I close my eyes and fall asleep.A gentle paw shakes me awake."Time to get up. I do not return to the same den I slept in last night.Instead, I follow Impala to his den.My new home.With my new mate.It is a mess inside."Impala," I say. "You're untidy."He chuckles. I run through the camp and to the alpha's den.I walk up to him."What do you want?" he asks."My match is not what I wanted," I say. CHAPTER FIVE

I can tell that he is right behind me.I can hear his footsteps as he runs towards me.He is much faster than I am. I keep running, but he is catching up. I look around, trying to find a place to hide.My eyes fall on a hollow log.I try to remember if there are any dangerous animals in it. I hope that it is empty.Impala is right behind me, so I run to it and dive into the log.I curl up at the bottom and cover my head.I hold my breath and wait.I can hear him sniffing me.I am shaking.I don't want him to find me.I don't want to be his match.I feel the log shifting.I peek out from my hiding place.Impala is staring down at me.He growls.I feel trapped."I don't want to fight you," I whisper. CHAPTER SIX

I wake up on the floor of a cave. My vision is still blurry, and my head is spinning, but I think I can make out the shape of bars around me.I am confused. Why am I in a cave? And why are there bars on the door? I try to stand up, but the room starts to spin, and I fall back down. I am dizzy. I try to crawl away from the bars, but I slip, and I feel my body hit the floor.I don't know what is happening. When I try to get up again, I start to lose my balance. My vision is getting even blurrier. I feel weak. So weak. I look down and realize I am covered in blood-- matted in it, even.It's on my legs, my belly, my paws. It's even on my back, which I can't see.I touch it, and the pain stings.I try to stop the bleeding, but I can't.My sight is fading.I'm so cold, and I'm struggling to breathe.My lungs are burning, but I force myself to inhale anyway. CHAPTER SEVEN

It seems impossible. Ajax, a traitor?But I don't want to question it. It doesn't seem like the right time or place. "I don't want to pry," I say. "If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine, but--""No, it's okay," he says. "I'm just not sure where to begin.""How about the beginning?" I ask, smiling at him."The beginning?" he says. "It all started the day my father died.""Your father died?" I ask."He was my alpha, and he was the one I looked up to-- the one I aspired to be like," he says. "He was brave and strong. CHAPTER EIGHT

"Are you finished?"I turn and look. The man from before, the one known as the guard, is standing just outside the door.I am nervous and I don't know what to say, but I don't want to say the wrong thing and get into trouble.I have no idea what the Alpha expects of me, and I have no idea how much trouble I can get into.The only way this is going to work is if I follow their rules. If I play by the rules and do what they say, I might get a chance at escape."I-- I need your help," I say. CHAPTER NINE

Once the Alpha signs off and my dress is finished, I am taken back to my cell. I am relieved to find Ajax is still there."How was it?" he asks."Dreadful," I say, sitting down on the edge of the cot, my hands folded in my lap."I'm not surprised," he says. Ajax looks at me. It's clear that he doesn't want me to stay, but he understands."I can't just leave you here," he says."You have to," I say. "They won't come for you the way they'll come for me. The Alpha would never admit you escaped. It would make him look weak.
