Chapter 11 : She Ran
Ayda's POV "Do you know of the Twilight Tavern in Eventide City?"I had half a mind to give Prince Sebastian a stern talking to when those words tumbled out of his mouth and stole mine away from me. It was the bar where I'd slept with that Alpha, who still haunted my dreams with his touch. At first, I suspected Nicolette of talking, breaking her oath to me, but then I remembered that I hadn't said the name of the bar last night. So how did the prince know?"I may have heard of it," I tread lightly on the subject, unsure of where this conversation would lead me. The prince was always an unpredictable one. "Why?""Who is the father of your child? Tell me, I need—I need to know."Just what in Tartarus was going on?"I am under no obligation to divulge such personal information to you, m'lord. If you'll excuse me—""It's important, Ayda," he blocked my path, putting himself bodily in front of Lady Narcissa's chambers. "Please, I beg of you, tell me

Chapter 12 : Never Look Back
Ayda's POV I shouldn't have come here.I had no business getting tangled in the affairs of nobles.I knew that now; I just hoped that the Goddess wouldn't punish me for my naivety."Geh, geh, geh!" For the second time in a little over a week, I was packing all of my belongings away with the thought of never coming back to Castle Lykaia. Gus was already freshly bathed and dressed, and I tucked my breast back into my shirt. "Neh!""I know, dearest," I put on his knit cap, making sure it covered his sensitive ears. He looked like an overstuffed marshmallow in his babe-sized pea coat Maud had gifted him. Like a tiny round professor off to teach at his college seminars. He was beyond adorable! "It's time to say goodbye.""Weh!""Yes, the trip back will be long, but then we'll see Giselle and all the other women at the salon again. And, we've missed them all terribly now, haven't we, my little prince?""Neh!" Gus threw his teddy bear to the floor, cle

Chapter 13 : And to Whom Goes the Spoils?
Narcissa's POVThe garden party is spectacular. I had the conservatory redone to better suit my tastes. Gone was the centuries-old rusted cage done in the gaudy stylings of Art Nouveau, the stuff of storybooks. Here, rising above the gauche din like a phoenix, were the neat, bold lines of tomorrow. The opulent stylings of Eclecticism! Rocco meets Gothic meets the grandiose heaviness of Brutalism. Flying buttresses and spires, finely detailed gilded molding, large rectangular mirrors framed in obsidian. It is a work of art, and it was all because of me.Anyone who was of worth was at my party, lavishing me with the praise I so richly deserved, was born to receive. Are we the nobility, not the divine rulers of the rest of the wolves? The omegas that have forgotten themselves? Become domesticated in their subservience to the Goddesses? The Great Deserter, O Fenrirwulf, had understood how the Gods feared us. Shackled us.The peasants were trying to do the sam

Chapter 14 : The Truth About Her Mate
Ayda's POV "Lady Narcissa would like a word with you."The coach was late, and the stable hands were too busy attending to the various guests' horses and carriages to offer help there."I don't like the sound of that," Nicolette breathed. The wind was an awful tempest outside, sharp and cold against your skin, leeching any warmth straight to the bones. The sky was an aged bone-white dome that robbed the sun of his exit so that only a dulled pinprick of light descended into the horizon. The whole world felt like it was on the precipice of tragedy, collectively holding its breath before news broke out.It had felt like this when the Uprising was quelled when the Morning Post was struggling to tally all the destruction that was left behind when the dust had settled. My stomach fluttered uneasily as I tried to glean what I could on the maid's face, but she showed me nothing. The wind changed direction abruptly, knocking my felted cartwheel hat off my wave

Chapter 15 : Sparring with the Spare
Sebastian's POV "Narcissa, you cannot keep doing this!"Narcissa looked at her maids kneeling near her desk like a bunch of dogs. None looked at her, their heads cast down in obedience. How long had they been crouched like that?"Whatever do you mean, dearest?" She had her mask on, playing the part of the sweet princess from over the mountains. The Treasure of the Diamond Spring pack, Narcissa Onasis. She fluttered her lashes at me, stamping her seal over more official documents. "Did I do something wrong? And must you keep banging the doors open? You'll splinter the mahogany and are letting in a draft!""You cannot veto a Writ of Hunting that's already in motion to pass." I waved the missive in her face, slamming it on the table. The Daffodil seal under my palm matched the others I saw on her desk. Proof of her ills. "There are proper ways to decline a law!"Narcissa glanced over the parchment, clicking her tongue in antipathy. Over my immature behavior

Chapter 16 : Meeting Her Wolf
Ayda's POV The room was watercolor in the rain, objects shifting and melting into each other. The lines that gave them form wiggled before my very eyes. Spinning, spinning, the room was spinning. It hurt to breathe; it hurt to be. A heat, a fire, a breakdown of the atoms, the fabric of my being, being consumed by the energy of the universe. I was being pulled apart, unmade, and hastily rebuilt. In to what I didn't know…"Easy dear, you're okay?" Maud? "Yes, girl, it's me. Don't you worry about your boy; I'll watch over him. You just get some rest. Let the Calling work through you. It'll feel better by tonight."Okay, okay, it was going to be okay.I let the darkness take me.***"I think we lost the plot for a bit."He spun me in a slow waltz, the chaotic jazzy ragtime of the previous band exchanging for the piano and strings heavy sounds of a proper concerto. It was romantic and light, and he was so easy on his feet! I wiggled into his suit, black

Chapter 17 : A Trap Is Set
Ayda's POV Come morning, all the discomfort I felt over the Calling was but a faded memory.Still, not wishing to further stress my body, I heeded Maud's advice and had breakfast in my bedroom. The world felt so different now. Colors were vibrant, almost phosphorescent in the way they dazzled. I could hear all sorts of sounds and was able to differentiate the treads of people's gaits, from Nicolette's dainty trot to Maud's heavier gallop. The smell was an unfortunate sensitivity I was still coming to terms with. I appreciated that perfumes and colognes were en vogue this season; it baffled me how offensive some people's scents were. Maud said that was to help determine who was an enemy or not, but I think the reasoning was far more mundane. I was going to avoid the stable hands and guards for the next foreseeable days until I got better control of my senses.Their predilection toward physical exertion, followed by a reluctance to hasten to the showers after…

Chapter 18 : A Crowd of Suitors
Ayda's POV In Emerald Lake, we didn't have ballrooms in the traditional sense. We had open-air amphitheaters for the orchestra that opened into massive, elaborately mosaicked dance floors that glimmer like gems in dazzling garden mazes. All so we could sway with those we loved under the stars. In a sense, I was no stranger to the unimaginable beauty of a dance hall. That said, the ballroom took my breath away.Unlike the main foyer with its fantastic imitation of the night full of the stars, the ballroom had the advantage of owning a splendorous glass ceiling; the center opened to display the moon as she made her trek across the sky. Around the crescent skylight, were fantastic scenes of wolves leaping through clouds and darkened forests. The glass marble, in a way, gave each color a certain depth, a shimmering effect that made the wolves seem almost alive. Obsidian pillars shaped like naked trees with their branches acting as both frame and solder points led the eye

Chapter 19 : Taken by the Prince in the Shadows
Ayda's POV "We match," Sebastian whispered in my ear, once we were quite away from the party. Back near the courtyard again, I'd noticed, and my heart rate skyrocketed. "Did you know?""I hadn't," though it pleased me to no end that we did. His suit was a cool slate with a matching vest, tie a rich burgundy to match the—"Is that a red jasmine?"His smile widened, and he plucked the flower up to show me: "I heard they were rare, but I figured you'd appreciate the blossoms more than roses. I…I've overstepped some bounds, haven't I?""That's not—I just didn't think—" You cared enough? You'd remember enough to care? "—the gesture is fine. That's all." Ah, way to go Ayda; now he'd probably think you hated him!"I could–" Sebastian unfurled his arm, putting some distance between us. I mourned the loss. He was putting up his walls, shielding his heart from anything that would hurt it. "Return you to the party, if you would like, once you have your moment of solitude. I'

Chapter 20 : Death in the Castle
Ayda's POV When I awoke, it was still dark, and so too, were my thoughts. If things had been different…If things had been different, if things had worked like the stories, then I would have been with Sebastian that night in Twilight Tavern and not his brother. It would have been Sebastian I would have given my maidenhood to and not… not to his brother. Sullied. A moment of puddle deep lust and nothing more.If things had been different, perfect, Alex might have still lived to marry Narcissa, leaving Sebastian able to betroth me. No one would have cared so long as the Golden Prince was still alive.Sebastian yawned, head pillowed on his knuckles leaning over me on top of his sheets. Sheets, blood red like the vision that haunted my sleep, and I made a sound like a wounded lamb."I was wondering when you'd wake up." He scooped me up, kissing the crown of my head. "I'm afraid that the halls are still packed with dignitaries. Apparently, there's a scavenger hunt f
