Chapter 50
Storming out of the bed, Dexter donned on his armor, leaving no time to spare. The crashes had become even louder still and from a distance he could see they were beginning to light some sections of the palace on fire. He gritted his teeth, the anger seeping out of his skin. The loud noises finally woke Maya up. Stirring on the bed, she sat up, squinting at the flickering lights that were filtering into the room. "What's going on?" She asked, her confusion apparent in her sleepy voice. Dexter froze, then rushed up to her. Grabbing her by the shoulders, he stared into her eyes. Calmly but sternly, he gave his orders. "Do not leave this room. You mustn't. Do you understand?" Maya face stared at him, confusion filling her face but she nodded all the same. Dexter's hands tightened on her shoulders even more as his gaze flickered, indecision riding him. He eventually let out a breath and kissed her forehead. "Please, stay safe." He begged, his voice thick with emo

Chapter 51
Maya woke up to a moving carriage. Forcing her bleary eyes open when the force of rattling became too much, she blinked continuously, her gaze unfocused. She stared listlessly for a while before her brain began to function. A chill running through her body, she realized just how cold she was. She tried to move but found out to her dismay that she had been bound, her wrists already red from the chaffing, the murky smell the carriage emanated kept turning her stomach, her dress reeked off the vomit and there were bloodstains at the hem of her gown. She reached up to her neck where a dagger was pressed against the night before, wincing at the pain. The sharp edges had bruised her skin. She glanced out the window. It was still dawn. "Finally awake?" A voice asked, causing her to stiffen. She looked to the direction. There was a hooded figure at the door. It was Nicholas and he wasn't looking at her. Maya tried to sit up, ignoring the splinters of pain running he

Chapter 52
Maya got pushed to one of the rundown tents at the far end of the campsite. Stumbling to the ground, Maya bit back a groan as she hissed, pain searing through her. The tent smelled awful and if it wasn't because there was nothing to retch up in her stomach, she would have vomited there and then. She picked herself up and tried to run out of the tent, but there were guards stationed in front of it. The moment they saw her, they shoved her back in, making her land back on the ground with a thud. Not wanting to incur their wrath, she decided to stay back. Slumping to the ground, Maya tried to hold back her tears but they slipped out of her eyes and soon her body was racking with sobs. She bit her trembling lips, clutching her hands together. I'm so scared, she muttered to herself over and over again. This place was riddled with men and there was no chance of escape even if she tried. As she cried, questions arose in her mind once again. What do they want from her bu

Chapter 53
(The next day) The very next day, a meeting was called upon with the members of the Royal council. The message has been passed across to the them and they have spent the last few hours arguing back and forth, telling the king not to do it but was he listening? The letter had confirmed two things. One, the Queen was still alive and well and Gavin had indeed betrayed the kingdom and wants a war unless the king fulfilled his requirement. He had already sent a scroll requiring the king's signature to passing the kingdom to him for the Queen. "We can attack him! No need to listen to that idiot's threat!" The minister of defense roared, glancing at his colleagues. A few of them nodded in support while the rest of the groaned in disapproval. "If we do that, the queen will die." Another noble shot back, countering him. "We've already found their base, we can have someone sneak into there and rescue the queen, no need to sign that stupid thing." He stressed again

Chapter 54
In the days that followed, Maya had grown positively miserable. The pain in her abdomen had worsened and living without food and water and weakened her terribly. She used to cry herself to sleep but now she doesn't have the energy for that anymore. She just lays on the ground, curled into a ball as she fought away the cold that had lodged into her very bones. Fortunately after that night, Gavin had stopped seeing her. But it didn't mean her worries had abated. She was always scared that one day, a random man might waltz into the tent and decide to use her body for pleasure. The terrifying thought had made it impossible for her to relax in any way. Today however proved to be different, as Maya laid on the bare ground, she noticed there was a flurry of activity in the usually calm campground. Blinking her eyes, Maya tried to figure out what was going on? Is Dexter here already? The thought made her heart race and she hoped she was true. Struggling to get to a sitting p

Chapter 55
As Maya galloped away with the horse, she couldn't stop staring at Dexter's receding figure which kept growing smaller by the second, tears leaving her eyes. A few soldiers had accompanied them with their horses, cutting away from the large army. "I have to get back." She screamed tearfully at Geoffrey, struggling against him. The latter only gripped her tighter, sprinting the horse faster. "We have to get you to a safe space your majesty, please, bear with us until then." Geoffrey muttered as they journeyed through the bare faced trees. They'd only met for a few seconds and now they had to separate again. What if he never back? Appalled by the thought, Maya cried even harder. Never ridden a horse before, Maya found the whole experience jarring. It added aches to her already sore body, and no matter how hard she tried, she could never relax on the sprinting beast. All of a sudden, a rain of arrows descended on them. Geoffrey quickly fished out a shield, eff

Chapter 56
Maya cried herself to sleep that night, still wrapped in Dexter's embrace. When she woke up the next morning, Dexter was nowhere to be found. The attendant that came to see her told her he had gone back to the battlefield and had left orders that they should return to the castle. Too emotionally drained to argue, she just allowed them to take her back. Her head and body hurt but what hurt the most was her heart. The knowledge that she had lost a child and she wasn't even aware of it always strangled her. She closed her mind to it multiple times but that was almost impossible. They brought her back to the palace. There, she saw the damage the attack had caused. A lot of the castle workers were excited to see her safely return both most were particularly anxious about the results of the war. They welcomed her warmly and the royal doctors immediately commenced treatment, feeding her with herbs and potions so she spent most of her time sleeping. Apart from them, it seemed

The week-long banquet soon ended and everything seemed to be going back to normal. Well, almost everything. There were still a few things that were left to be sorted out. Thankfully, Dexter didn't avoid her as heavily as before, if anything he seemed to have grown more attentive to her. Maya was happy he wasn't pulling away from her like before and she seemed to like it at first but it didn't take long for her to grow tired of it. He had fed her till she gained weight and stopped her from doing anything strenuous. Also, she couldn't go anywhere without a trail of soldiers and guards beside her, an act she found incredibly exhausting. And although he held her every night they went to sleep, Maya couldn't help but think it wasn't as intimate as before. Everyone in the Palace just treated her like she was deathly ill and it began to grate her nerves. The time for Gavin's trial drew nearer and although she waited for Dexter to discuss it with her, he had yet to say a word

Chapter 58
Maya dropped to her knees. The act stunned Dexter more than anything. "What are you doing? He asked as he stared down at her. But Maya just dismissed him, busying herself with untying the ropes and buttons that held his clothes. Dexter soon realized what she wants to do and started to panic. "Okay, okay. I understand! Please, just get up. Please." He tried to carry her but it took one glare from Maya for him to freeze. Torn on what to do, he looked away from her. Maya returned to what she was doing. With little difficulty she had succeeded in removing his trousers and watched them slide down, revealing him. Her breath caught in her throat and her heart began pounding. Subconsciously, she bit her lips, her anger overridden with desire and carnal want. "You don't understand what you're doing. Get up please." Dexter started to say, his voice gruff. "Oh, I do. I understand perfectly." Maya muttered as she held his waist, looking up at him. "Now, stay still." She

Chapter 59
As Maya laid on the bed, the cold air caressed her skin, causing her hair to stand on end. Her heart racing in her chest, Maya resisted the urge to try to cover herself out of embarrassment. Still, Dexter didn't come to her immediately. Just when she gave up and wanted to look at him, she heard footsteps approaching and she stiffened, holding her breath. He finally got to her side and spent a great deal of time looking at her. Their eyes met and Maya bit her lips, still tasting the salty essence of him in her mouth. Maya didn't know what she wanted, only that he was too far away and she was way too cold. His gaze finally left her face and travelled down. They felt like hands running down her body and she squirmed, feeling too exposed. She could see his throat bobbing and his gaze grew even darker, glowing with desire. He groaned and climbed on the bed, claiming her lips. A soft sigh escaped hers and his tongue delved deeper, ravishing her. The slow burn she'd been f
