Gwen rubbed her eyes impatiently. Staring at her laptop for hours, she sifted through job offers for secretary or assistant – positions that paid a little more than minimum wage. Living in New York is expensive, no matter what neighborhood you live in. At times over the last few months, she'd thought about moving somewhere else, but in her late thirties with a young child, she wasn't sure she was ready to start over. Besides, she loved her city and wasn't ready to admit defeat. At least not yet. Turning her attention back to her job search, Gwen clicked to refresh the page and was happy to see a new proposal published. Reading the long description for the secretary position of a very busy executive, her eyes widened when she saw the salary offered. She thought about how much her savings had dwindled to almost nothing in the last few months and how quickly she could replenish it again. "I found a!" she announced to her sister, Alyssa, as she tucked her long, curly, red hair behind

The next morning, Gwen woke up to the sound of her cell phone. Sitting on the bed and picking up the handset, she barely saw an unknown number. It was only eight in the morning, so she considered ignoring the call and going back to sleep."Who could it be?" she thought to herself as she tried to figure out who the number belonged to. Feeling dizzy, she rubbed her eyes, yawned and exhaled loudly before hitting the “answer” button on her cell phone."Hello?" he asked as he heard his upstairs neighbors yelling over his head.“Yes, may I speak with Gwen , please?”a woman with a foreign accent asked politely.“I'm Gwen, how can I help you?” replied cordially.“Miss , my name is Amelia. I'm calling in response to your inquiry about job availability at Denisov International,” the woman said succinctly.“Yes, I sent my resume yesterday; thank you for responding so quickly,” Gwen's energy level soared. She felt as if there really was a light at the end of the long tunnel she had been travel

“Alexander Denisov,” he introduced himself confidently. Her attitude was professional, assertive and downright sexy. Gwen looked him up and down as she squeezed his hand. About six feet tall, he estimated. Her heels made her measure 1.80 meters – and that man made her feel smaller by smiling in her direction. The cut of his suit suited him so well, she wondered if he'd had it custom-made or just altered. He smiled at Gwen easily and, as his deep blue eyes started to close, he winked at her. As they shook hands, she glanced at his wavy dark brown hair and found herself wondering if they wereas thick and smooth as they looked'You know, they say the eyes are the window to the soul,' he commented softly as he held her hand. Gwen's cheeks flushed when she noticed his smile, which seemed to indicate that he had noticed her gazes. She became nervous, feeling as if he could read her thoughts – she thought about how much she could be wasting with this attitude.Gwen almost melted when he smi

The two jumped together.“Did you get the job?” Alyssa screamed as she danced. "Tell me everything."They sat on the couch. Gwen laughed as she described her role and blushed as she talked about how handsome her new boss was. “Lys, I didn't think this was possible, but he's so much nic

Gwen spent the rest of the day splitting her time between Amelia's instructions and Alexander's constant yelling about different things. She laughed at the many times she caught her boss pouting when she didn't respond quickly enough, and thanks to Amelia's work diary and calendar, she was better able to understand what kind of activities he was doing during the day and knew that with the Days passed, your reaction time would be shorter.Standing quietly, she waited for Alexander to finish his phone. Since her back was turned, Gwen took him by surprise when he turned his chair and her name was already on the tip of his tongue. Smiling smugly, sheHe handed her the file Amelia had said her brother would need – and her dazzling smile as she took the papers almost took his breath away.“Yes, I could get used to looks like that,” she told herself and paused to make sure she hadn't spoken aloud. Arriving at work, Gwen stopped by the Human Resources department to find out what the protocol was for hiring an assistant. The HR manager was happy to fill her in on basic expectations for the role and salary range, but was reluctant to let Gwen do the job posting and interviews alone, mentioning company policies and state laws. After a long discussion and promises to keep them informed of every step, he went upstairs with the usernames and passwords needed for the job sites the company used.By the time Gwen arrived at her desk, she already had a long list of skills required for an assistant, which included attention to detail and basic office skills. She wanted an assistant who was an extension of herself, of how she was being for Alexander. The work hours rushed by and she felt like she was walking on eggshells with Alexander, who was very irritated at a phone call she'd overheard. The next morning, Gwen was stopped at the reception desk to let her know if she was expecting two candidates to interview. After giving their names, she made her way to the elevator, which took her to the top floor. She was surprised to see that Alexander was already in the office, judging by the pile of files on her desk and the loud voices coming from his office.By ten o'clock, she had her last report printed and was surprised to find that there was no sign of her interviewee, Jessica. As soon as he exhaled a sigh of relief, the elevator beeped; a small woman with black hair got out and hurried towards their table.“Yes, can I help you?” Gwen asked. “Yes, I am Jessica Tindon and I spoke to someonefrom here yesterday on the phone,” she announced taking a deep breath. Gwen evidently checked her watch and saw that the woman swallowed hard as she watched her.“I am Gwen. Follow me to the conference room, this way.”Jessica followed Gwen as they walked to the farthest conference room a

“Ah yes, she is a dangerous mix of intelligence and beauty,” Alexander revealed and turned to admire her. Gwen felt her cheeks heat up and quickly reached for her wine to hide her discomfort. As much as she liked his compliments, being singled out at the table bothered her.As time went on, the conversations became more lively, although most of them were in Russian. Disengaging from them, Gwen studied each one in turn. Whether they came from wealthy families or were self-rich, women happily flaunted their wealth based on how much gold and diamonds they wore. Anastasia seemed to be the richest, if the size of thediamonds on her fingers were the indication. She was also surprised by the number of times she asked permission to go to the bathroom – and seemed to come back more upset. Gwen wondered if men equally flirted with drugs, or if it was just women. She felt alone in that room full of people. While I don't believe they intentionally wanted to delete it, no one made an effort to tr

Gwen had no idea what Alexander had planned for tonight. After spending most of the afternoon at the spa, she returned to the suite, but he wasn't there. She set the phone alarm and lay down for a nap, leaving plenty of time to get ready. After getting dressed, he looked at himself in the mirror. In the same heels as the night before, she admired herself as she spun. While she was willing to choose simple black dresses for the weekend, her sister spoke of another colorful dress; Gwen found herself wrapped in a purple dress.“Alyssa, I think you lost your profession,”spoke aloud and took a picture to send to her sister. The wrap dress sat comfortably on her hips and the halter neck left little to the imagination with its plunging neckline and open back. He decided to let his hair down again and combed it as best he could, but in the Miami humidity, it soon curled.Giving herself one last look, Gwen walked out of her room and almost ran into Alexander, who was standing in front of the

The next morning, Gwen woke up alone in bed. Sitting up, he saw a robe at the foot of the bed. Sliding through it, she left the room and found Alexander showered, enjoying a cup of coffee while talking on the phone. He motioned for her to sit down and she joined him at the small table, pouring herself a cup of coffee.Looking out over the beach over her coffee, Gwen marveled at how different the view was compared to New York. She could even get used to it, she thought to herself. When he ended the call, Alexander placed the phone on the table. “You look beautiful this morning.”Shaking her head, Gwen hid behind her coffee cup and blushed. She didn't feel pretty this morning; he felt completely normal.“Don't hide your beauty, Gwen, use it,” he urged. Alexander gently brushed her face with his hand as he tried to reassure her that she was indeed beautiful. She looked at him and laughed, not sure how to respond, which was a strange feeling for her. With her bright red hair and pale skin
